Can anyone please shed a little light on these jeeps?
Very close to buying one second hand from a dealer with 3 month warranty.
Great wall steed se model 2.0 Litre tdi crew cab pickup.
Has anyone here used one or have one currently? Are they a good buy, reliable?
Or am I gonna run myself into money replacing parts? Test drove one today and seem happy with it, bit noisy and plastic inside but for the money I could put up with that as long as they have a fairly good reputation on there engine and gearbox or major parts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

They're ****e. Poor parts supply and rust like fook.

It would want to be stupidly cheap.

    Nothing cheap is good.
    Nothing good is cheap.
In this case I'm afraid it's true. They are a disaster.

Are they not heavily based on the trusty ISUZI D max ?

based on, like a decade ago ssangyong dealers were saying 'sure its based off a mercedes engine'

i bought a d-max in 2010, great pickup, build quality was utilitarian but it was a nice jeep, these great wall steeds are a design clone of the old model d-max, but at 2/3rds the sale price, the d-max was never a vehicle you could really spend less on so I wouldnt hold out hope for these chinese pickups.

The bodyshell is designed by Isuzu. That’s about it.

They're getting good enough write ups in the YooKay. Underpowered and basic. They may not be perfect but mark my words, in ten years time they'll be as mainstream as jap yokes.

    utter heap of junk

know of 1 that rear panel caved in last year in the warm weather, and that is the least of it's issues

also not all parts are available with long waiting list.

And I'll wait till they fix their Q&R issues before I'd buy one.

Is the rear panel an aftermarket canopy or what?

It's Chinese, that should be enough reason to stay away from it.

Get yourself a panda 4x4, you'd be a lot happier with it than this pile of rubbish.

A panda 4x4 won’t be any good for work or towing etc.

Long term I would be concerned about parts. I think the brand is operated by licensed distributor here, rather than manufacturer having a direct presence (AFAIK). Pathetic resale, so you need to be buying very cheap. Also Great Wall are not known for high crash test safety ratings in their cars.

Neither are Isuzu to be fair.

That rating is the much older 2008 D-Max.

The 2012 model was rated 4 star on Euroncap, but the latest model isn't listed yet. Isuzu had to up their game in safety if they wanted to be able to supply to the mining fleet markets in countries like Australia, where the latest D-Max (2016) in ANCAP is 5 star. https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/isuzu/d-max/515886

Great Wall aren't even on the Euroncap. ANCAP rating for the 2016 Steed gives them 2 stars https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/great-wall-motors/steed/f1caf2

Isuzu also have a few decades of proven reliability. Again, I recall in Australia mining companies having fleets of D-Maxs and their 2 tonne light trucks as it made servicing easier because they had the same 3.0L TDI engine. Not the most efficient engine around, but certainly dependable.

That statement needs a bit of qualification. All major OEMs have plants in China, and many of the parts in an European assembled car come from China, electronics in particular. Almost all consumer electronics come from there, as there is no better place for them to be manufactured.

The problem isn't just that it's Chinese per se, it's that it's extremely cheap from a company established in Europe, with little to no idea of what we expect in terms of quality. I wouldn't buy one in a million years.
