Die Hard 2 because when I die I'll come back as John McClane.

Die Hard ... can’t explain it as he wouldn’t be my usual type but, I fancy John/Bruce in this movie

Die Hard 2, same formula as the first, and works nearly as well (Alan Rickman was irreplaceable)

Die Hard 2 - an airport taken over by terrorists, what's not to love?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Die Hard 2 because just when you think the same damn **** couldn't happen to the same guy twice, it does. And because of the gunfights and senseless violence. Exactly what Christmas is all about

That's all 32 matches. 32 films now in the second round.

Thanks to everyone who voted. That's 40 individual voters, with special thanks to Also Starring LeVar Burton for voting in 28 out of 32 of them!!!

Hopefully well get through Round 2 and Round 3 tomorrow.

Just for interest, I had a list of films to use as wildcards. I ended up picking what I thought were the most popular. I could have got it wrong. These were films that I had on the list that went unused:

The Bells of St. Mary's (1945)
    We're No Angels (1955)
    Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
    Hostile Hostages (1994)
    Surviving Christmas (2004)
    Black Christmas (2006)
    Deck the Halls (2006)
    A Christmas Tale (2008)
    The Night Before (2015)
    Krampus (2015)
    The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

Seriously though, fair play for the organisation and getting the bouts up so quickly!

Well done QB that was some great show running. :D

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

31/32 of those in the next round were nominated. One was a wild card that beat a nominated film. So voting pretty consistent with nominations.

I missed a load of rounds! Well done to the OP and all the vigilant contributors so far. I would describe the selection as a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly!

Just as an FYI, I highly recommend Christmas Inheritance on Netflix. Wasn't eligible for this tournament as it's a Netflix Original and never got a cinema release, but its an absolute delight.

The Santa Claus. I was too old to appreciate them when they came around first but my kids love them now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,422 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

    I vote The Santa clause

Can't actually remember if I ever saw Hook, but the santa clause would bring out the christmas feeling more for me

Round 2, Match 1: The Santa Clause vs Hook: I will have to plump for Hook as it has Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, two of my favourite actors. It is an entertaining light-hearted action film. The Santa Clause is enjoyable too as it happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

    Hook!

Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith, Phil Collins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Glenn Close, Carrie Fisher, George Lucas... I mean come on...

Danny Devito and Arnie are in Twins, doesn’t make it the greatest Christmas film of all time

Twins is good fun, but it has to be The Santa Clause for a new take on the Santa story.

And having "Santa Claus" in the title, doesn't mean a film is great, or even any good at all.

Twins is not the other film! Hook is! I think the other poster was a making a point that the sheer presence of noteworthy actors does not ip so facto make it a good movie!

Doesn't hurt though. Tim Allen's only performance of note was voice acting for Buzz Lightyear.

If only this was a competition for the greatest movie of all time

Willy Wonka for me as Wonka is what Santa should be. Less creepy somehow.

I'd like to nominate this film, which is sure to be a hit with those posters who seem to share Lauren Graham's obsession.
