    Home Alone (1990)

Die Hard - have to agree that it's more christmassy storywise

Nooo , missed this vote off :(

If blowing away a bunch of polo neck wearing German terrorists is Christmassy, then I'll take it with all the trimmings.

4 great semi finalists in fairness, would watch any of them while milling cheese and wine

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Probably should have increased the winning total of votes for the last round but I forgot.

For the Semis, since there's plenty of people on voting, I'm gonna look for 10 (TEN) votes to get to the final.

Please remember to give reasons for your vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

Not enough voting for such an important play off, DieHard would be just a frozen corpse of a movie if left open longer :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,832 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Die Hard is pure awesome. Great film.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

    Nakatomi Plaza is tastefully decorated.

In the bodies of bad guys, and an honourable mention to Ellis for his decorating efforts.

Die Hard because it’s the best Christmas film and should have been declared the best at the beginning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Ah f**k, really impossible choice. Adore them both.

Look, I'm gonna go with Gremlins because at least kids can watch it too. Would happily see either in the final though in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭tonytiger81

Ahhh I knew this would happen!! I'll go gremlins cos of the bar scene and "yer wan" on the chairlift going aero

Not a fan of either but will vote Gremlins to try to keep Die Hard from competing with my two remaining

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,231 ✭✭✭Hercule Poirot

Die Hard - it's excellent, OTT action nonsense with heart and laughter and I was never really a "die hard" fan of Gremlins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

    Gremlins more cute than Willis

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 14,157 Mod ✭✭✭✭pc7

Oh so hard!!!!! But have to go for Die Hard, many a Christmas night when younger, coming in from a Christmas party and I’d watch it, great tag line too.

Die hard because we're doing it for Back to the Future!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,313 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Noooo this should be the final.

Sorry Gizmo, I'm plumping for McClane and his wife beater here.

Now I have a machine gun

    HO HO HO

    Best Christmas movie line ever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,109 ✭✭✭circadian

Die Hard because of all the reasons. Its still watchable over 30 years later.

No, it's still brilliant. DeSouza nailed it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,648 ✭✭✭honeybear

    Die Hard because of Bruce

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,343 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Ah crap, my two remaining nominations. Got to go with Die Hard, it's got everything your need for a great Christmas - guns, explosions and Twinkies.

    Welcome to the real world.
Die hard is a chance to watch other people suffering at a Christmas party without having to submit yourself to it.

It's a chance to dream about what you'd like to do to those pesky clients/colleagues/customers from overseas who struggle to understand your accent without eventually flying off the handle and telling them to just send an email.

A perfect way to release some tension and unwind before the festivities begin with your loved ones.

Also, if the scene of them opening the lift to find a guy wearing a sweatshirt with the words Ho, Ho, Ho on it didn't make you feel warm and fuzzy and say, 'Awwwwwwe' then you are some sort of psychopath.

Ah cr@p, I was hoping this would be the final as they're the best two left in the competition

Gremlins because it has a more dark sense of humour than Die Hard. Mentioned it before, but the scene in the bar is amazing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,074 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Die Hard.

    Because it's Die Hard.

    Seriously. Way better movie.

    DIE HARD

    END OF CONVERSATION.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,713 ✭✭✭Pretzill

Die Hard wins over Gremlins because of John McClane and his power of walking through a hail of bullets, crashing cars and fire unscathed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,832 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

    Die hard, it's pure brilliance

Machine guns and a santa hat, what more do you want!!

End of converation was the reason.

If it needs saying, it's just a far superior film. The older it gets the more charming it is, but even without the 80's-ness, it's a really good action film. Funny, with a hero you actually like, supporting characters that amuse you and a villain with no redeeming characters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

Home Alone. The ultimate Christmas classic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,109 ✭✭✭circadian

Home Alone, me ma hated it when I was a kid but myself, the brothers and my da were in tears every time.

    Hmmmmm....

    Tactical or preference?

    Gonna go...

    It's A Wonderful Life.

Probably deserves the final a little bit more than Home Alone.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,343 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Home Alone, purely for John Candy

    Its a wonderful life
Because it should win the whole competition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,713 ✭✭✭Pretzill

It's a Wonderful Life is a deserving finalist and it gets my vote over Home Alone which is also a great movie but doesn't have the staying power.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭tonytiger81

Its a Wonderful Life - Joe Pesci can do a Billy Batts on that little turd of a kid!
