Slow down a electrical motor

Is it possible to get a device preferably with a foot pedal that could be used to control the speed of electrical devices? I would like something akin to the foot pedal you used to get with electric sewing machines
I would want to use it with hand tools.

I have looked on the web but am not sure how it would be listed.

Yes, slow the frequency of the electricity and the motor will slow.

Aparantly a lamp dimmer may work. If you take the chord out of the lamp and stick it in your jigsaw. I’m not a reci though and wouldn’t try It myself. My legal opinion is to put the jigsaw fuse in the new plug.

But ask somebody who has a clue if I’m right before doing this.

Modern dimmers chop the frequency wave up, that's why they make led bulbs flicker, but I don't think they are rated for many amps so you'd need to look at what type of power you want to draw.

Under no circumstances do the above. A lighting dimmer will probably be rated for 100 watts maximum or so. Any hand tool I can think of would be far above this rating and will pull too much current, at best tripping out immediately and at worst causing a fire.

It will depend entirely on the type of motor. Unless the appliance has been specifically designed for speed control it will be difficult to do safely.

Varying the frequency wont work very well, on universal motors which many hand tools use.

The voltage needs to be varied for those tyoe motors.

Although variable frequency drives do vary the voltage for soft starting. But they are for induction motors.

Variac maybe? Id take it the foot pedal will have to have a potentiometer or something.
