Most companies like direct debits as it enables them to debit your account directly with variable amounts and is usually set up through the company rather than going straight to bank.

A standing order is under your control and must be set up by you for a fixed amount either online or through bank.

(Assuming nothing has changed since I left banking a long time ago )
