Just heard of a family friends dad whose family has been told to say their goodbyes as they don’t think he’s gonna survive. They believe he got it at the Liverpool v Athletico game when he stayed over the night for the game. I’d say there’s loads of examples of people like this at sporting events all across the spectrum.

It’s a tragedy, but it also makes me wonder if people’s affinity with sports or going to games might change. Once it’s back on tv we can all watch our teams but people won’t be as quick to travel to games. I won’t be getting on a plane anytime soon and the thought of getting a ferry to a match after the cruise issues is not a priority. Now I know some people won’t care but a lot of people will be slow to travel to games abroad, some may never do it again.

Tragic and all thoughts and respect go out to the family

But I don't think he caught it at the game its been recoded that it takes between 25 and 28 days from contraction to death ,
The game was the 11th of March and its currently the 20/04 so he has gone well beyond that point ,

obviously I'm not a doctor so could be wrong

Both the Liverpool v Athletico game and Cheltenham will be looked back at and seen as huge mistakes to have held them.

David Maddock, who said going ahead with that game was criminal, has been talking about it. Says that Liverpool did everything they could go have the game postponed but it was a government decision in the end and was taken out of their hands.

Lots of tragedy since. He said at the time of the game that infection rates in Liverpool were less than half of Manchester. 3 weeks later it was more than 3 times the infection rate Manchester had.

5,000 people who weren't allowed to go to any football game in their own country were allowed to travel to one in Liverpool.

Game shouldn't have happened, and even if it were going ahead the Home Office should have stopped the fans from travelling. Ludicrous in hindsight.

Home Office were seemingly working with the idea that getting the infection rate up with the goal, so that the immunity rate would eventually rise too.

Treating it like a little worse than a flu.

There should be public inquiries and possibly jail terms for the governemt in the Uk. Deliberately went about a course of action that has resulted in countless more deaths than would have occured if they had acted with a modicum of sense.

Ye I read that , Jurgen himself was strongly against the tie going ahead but felt he couldn't speak out as it could effect his players if it went ahead, Then because Liverpool lost he really couldn't voice that opinion or people would say he was a sore loser, That came from Carlo Ancelotti who had spoke to him the week before the game ,

First Minister of Scotland dubious that even behind closed doors games are feasible this season. Obviously England will decide to on their own merit, but she's voiced similar concerns others have in the now closed covid football thread.

At least it wasn't a late call to play behind closed doors. I reckon having those Madrid fans travel and end up packed into the bars around town for the game would have been worse than escorting the majority of them up to Anfield where they were segregated for the game.

If they hadn't been hammered over Anfield and Cheltenham I'd say the English side of the border would be a lot more punchy with the restarting of sport but I think they're likely to pause a bit because of public criticism. "Better" day numbers wise in the UK too, so let's hope it continues down now.

Remember when Olympiakos' president literally had Coronavirus and even then they still played that game with Wolves. Even behind closed doors what were they thinking.
Plenty of people say the Atalanta/Valencia & Lyon/Juve were linked with a surge in cases too.
Cheltenham looks even more gross to look at in hindsight. I don't think anyone with a brain thinks it should have went ahead.

Bundesliga is back May 9th behind closed doors.
Disapointing for some on here that football may be coming back soon

Reward for a country that's got on top of the virus. Germany’s fatality rate is around 2%, compared with 10% plus in Italy, Spain, France and Britain.

Can nothing be posted without taking shots. Both clusters as bad as the other.

    Pathetic.

So many times it was discussed by alot of posters on here. That was before and after the game if I can recall.

Sad to hear that people who went to that came could die for what is arguably gross negligence by the UK government

It's also in discussion to possibly return May the 9th.

Some only wanted football back without fans & until a vaccine. It is disapointing for them.

Is this officially confirmed? If so that’s such good news, hopefully the start of many things getting back on track..

Awful pity you had to take the childish dig at others though..

I’ve a family member who caught it in February in Italy and only got out of hospital Friday week ago after nearly dieing. The person at the Liverpool game was actually expected to die last week and is effectively on life support but they are surprised he’s still around.

Nothing about this virus appears to be straight forward I’m afraid.

I can honestly say as a Man Utd fan, I wish the season could restart again 2moro, I would gladly watch a packed Anfield seeing Liverpool lift the Premiership trophy they fully deserve this year.

I don’t watch the Bundesliga but I will be delighted if they can get going again so soon.

That football may be starting to get switched back on slowly (German top league). Can only be a good thing for the premier league, and other leagues.

    Nothing more.

The German death rate is so low because of all the testing and they dont count a lot of deaths unless they are a direct cause of the Corona virus, their death rate makes no sense when at the beginning of the lockdown they were way lower. Great to see some football coming back.

    The Oil drop is incredible.

PSG owner & Abramovich will lose billions. Maybe Man City's owner too although unsure how involved they are in oil now.

I think Newcastle were due to be in talks for a takeover, one of the Saudi royals was supposed to buy the club. I wonder if the oil drop will put a halt to that now.

That deal is done pending PLM approval. Contracts signed, no backing out now.

the saudi plans for Newcaslte might be impacted though. Might be less of a warchest than planned, but they do have more money than we could imagine so they will probably continue on regardless. The sports washing plan will be too important to them, especially if their global power starts to become reduced through Oil issues. They will be even more keen to position themselves in other ways so that people continue to ignore their horendous Human Rights records and murders.

I'm just delighted the Saudis got into bed with Newcastle rather than Liverpool or Utd, for very different reasons.

S.Korea were on top of it from the very start, iirc, so i guess it was always going to be the case they'd be returning to normal(ish) sooner than most.

For clarification on what you wrote yourself - they have agreed to a partial pay and bonus defferal. You sentence reads that all pay and bonus.
the entire professional playing staff have emulated the decision, accepting a partial pay deferral, plus bonus payments, until the end of 2020, amid uncertainty regarding the timing for a return to action.

yeah... their circumstances are actually so far removed from the UK's that they're probably not a great indicator of what to expect elsewhere. They had their containment plan ready to go before it ever happened.

A buddy of mine is a translator over there, and it really is incredible... for instance if someone tests positive and had been in the local supermarket the previous day, everyone in the local area gets an alert to tell them, along with the time the person was there etc. Seem to be excellent with the specific contact tracing too, reaching out to everyone that may have been around a carrier more directly, and keeping really strong geographic track of hotspots, and clearer areas.

There was a strong recommendation given to finish domestic top division and cup competitions, although it is understood that there may be some special cases. With this in mind, UEFA is currently developing some guidelines concerning participation in its club competitions, in order to assist its member associations in case of a cancelled league or cup.

So still more meetings about nothing

It's a funny one... I'm pretty sure we actually have the technology to do it too, completely non-invasively... i'm back in Ireland now, but I live in the states, and they have these 'amber alerts', which is whenever there's a kidnapping (usually one parent in a separated couple taking the kid, rather than the ransom sort), everyone's phones light up with the persons license plate and car description and a way to notify the authorities if there's a sighting. They just pick out the bunch of cell-towers around where it happened, and everyone within range receives the alert.

Don't think we use that stuff here, but every modern phone has the capability to receive these, and I'd imagine our network providers have the capability to send mass messages the same way. Just, like, blasting out a message that Tesco in Dun Laoghaire had a carrier yesterday at 3pm to everyone in Dun Laoghaire. Though in Ireland's case, people aren't generally getting results very quickly, so I suppose that info becomes a bit irrelevant by the time the results come in a week or two later.

    Pretty much.

I think they key point from today was that UEFA still want all the leagues to finish, but they will now listen to special requests to finish up the leagues early, in special circumstances. It doesn't mean that they will be granted though, just that UEFA will listen.

According to Dale Johnson, null & void is not an option for major leagues.

    https://twitter.com/DaleJohnsonESPN/status/1252601015817441280

So going by this, the Premier League is either getting played behind closed doors, or else maybe a small chance of the league finishing now with current positions as end of season positions.

  • The UK are back up to 873 fatalities. Very sad and another indication of how far behind the UK are compared to other countries who put the correct measures in place at the right time.

Understandable for countries like Germany and South Korea to be discussing a possible mild return of sports in certain scenarios.

Some more info here on today's information in the UK

"The daily coronavirus death toll figures for the UK show a rise of 873 fatalities after seeing lower numbers at the weekend.

Meanwhile the Office for National Statistics (ONS) warns the death toll could be 40% higher than reported."

It's the Tuesday trend again. Cases go down on Sunday and Monday due to lower reporting over the weekend and then the shortfall gets added to Tuesdays numbers. It's been happening for weeks.

5 players + 1 GK from each team go to Wembley for the day. Play out the remaining games in a penalty shoot out form. a 5-5 results in a draw!

Ot but I thought early on thered be a rush of eSports stuff organised by sky or the like to get something on television. As close to live sport as there can be and if its the players doing it, therell be interest. There's been a couple of f1 races but precious little else. Even the FIFA one over the last few days wasn't shown live on sky sports I don't think, possibly the semi and final.
