I can see Palace going down to 10 as well.

big goal, weirdly given the ten men it was kinda coming. They have been good in the 2nd half. Fair play to Hause too he has been very good since he has gotten his chance.

Palace will no doubt throw everything at them now but they have looked a little toothless and will be lucky to finish the game with a full team too. Benteke isn't the same guy he used to be so it's mostly Zaha... okay blame me for the jinx :(

    Watkins really needs a goal

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

I think the goals will come for Watkins but 3 assists from him today isn't too shabby. It's mad that Villa are averaging more than 2 goals a game this season so far and if they can hang on today thats 4 clean sheets in a row (harder opponents on the horizon though)

Could have had a hat trick today. Needs to work on his finishing but he has played very very well in general play.

Ollie Watkins is never scoring again but will have 40 assists

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,093 ✭✭✭Patser

10 man Villa looking comfy in defence, and Hause scoring. Mings will have to be very careful about his starting position

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

Villa handled this game like a top team, how many times over the years have Villa been beaten by teams near the top of the table who are down to 10 men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,111 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Grand fckn day. Really shouldn't be fearing teams tbh. Playing with utter confidence.

It's a hard thing to do when missing a man especially in that position. Then to knock 3 in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

    10 points from 12, amazing.

We can go into the next 3 with nothing to lose, Chelsea, Man United and Spurs with Liverpool in the FA cup thrown in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭rebelomar

    Outstanding performance. Well done lads

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,854 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

Mings suspended and yet I have no worries about a Konsa/Hause partnership, weirdly great.

Not expecting wins but Chelsea, Utd and Spurs can actually be quite Jekyl / Hyde in terms of performances and results this year. Chelsea losing to West Ham/Wolves recently for example.

Keep doing what Villa are doing and you never know

4 clean sheets in a row is absolutely amazing. Targett has really improved.

I'm not worried about Watkins, he's getting chances, he's working incredibly hard, the goals will come. Be far worse if he wasn't getting into the positions to score.

If we had a natural finisher, Grealish would be king of the assists.

Maybe, 1st yellow was a bit soft as Zaha was the one swinging. But if you're on a yellow, its still stupid to do what he did. Simple, soft sending off

I thought it was soft at first but there was a stamp from Mings. Unfortunately he has form and there’s only so many times you can give him the benefit of doubt.

Watkins was outstanding, felt so sorry that he didn't get on the scoresheet. He does so much for the team and is increasingly vital in how Villa can have games like that. Targett and Cash again were excellent, as was Hause. So many players with improved performances and consistency over last season.

I'm looking forward to those games because, yes, they can be inconsistent.

We have won all our games against the so called better teams, bring em on.

Forgot to mention Traore too, looked a great option on that during all the time he was on, very unlucky with the shot off the post. Looking another good option in the squad once everyone is fit, with Barkley and Trez yet to come back.

3 points great performance, doesn’t have the headlines of our Liverpool win but equally as important

The relationship Watkins has formed with Grealish is the reason Villa are currently 6th in the league. Show me a chance they create that doesn't involve Grealish picking up on a great run by Watkins, and executing the perfectly timed pass to release him into the (usually left) channels. Defenses scramble, gaps open up for Grealish, El Ghazi etc. to pick up on either a parried shot, cross, deflection off the post, crossbar (however else Watkins conspires to not score :D).

Great result and fantastic to see the team continue to play well down to 10 men.

There is nothing Watkins could have done to score today, as if some great diety is actively stopping it from going in. 3 assists though, played a great game without being on the score sheet.

Up to 5th now with Chelsea being hammered. :)

Probably will last about an hour until Steve Bruce’s boys take the pitch against Man City.

Nice stat from today. Villa had 5 shots on target in the time they were down to 10 men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 838 ✭✭✭rebelomar

67 shots on goal over the last three games.

    Those are huge numbers.

Watkins would be on double figures if our wingers passed. Even if they only passed when the shot wasn't on he'd be on double figures.

The 2 lads have hit a bit of form but when we are level or behind its getting annoying. Burley could have been another 2 points on the board for example.

Thats a bit critical with the way results have been going but im fairly sure we don't get as many chances in the next 4 games.

It's fairly easy information to find tbh.

    21 vs Palace
    19 vs West Brom
A whopping 27 vs Burnley and we drew a blank!

ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS - KONSA IN FOR MINGS

Team to play Chelsea: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Hause, Targett, Luiz, McGinn, Grealish, Traore, El Ghazi, Watkins

Subs: Heaton, Taylor, Hourihane, Nakamba, Engels, Guilbert, Elmohamady, Davis, Ramsey

CHELSEA TEAM NEWS - SIX CHANGES

Team to play Aston Villa: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Chilwell, Jorginho, Kante, Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Giroud

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Silva, Abraham, Werner, Tomori, Kovacic, Gilmour, Havertz, Emerson

The difference a squad makes, we have 1 enforced change. Chelsea make 6 to rest players. All our lads played pretty much full game 48 hours ago...... Smith needs to start making some subs to rest players or they'll be shattered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

    Still, I'm quietly confident.

It's the players playing every minute that need protecting, Grealish, McGinn and Watkins. They are so key to us that not playing them is almost forfeiting the game.

I think the FA cup game will be a 2nd string.

I bet the tiredness doesn't kick in as quickly when your winning games.

Its amazing how now you think going into a game that you can't get something out of it whereas before this would be written off

    Traore asleep and lost Chilwell.

No lines from armpits when it's against us.

Been coming, we're very exposed in right corner, Cash is outnumbered

We're not out of this game though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,093 ✭✭✭Patser

Almost again, same trick - Pulisic drives at Cash, drags him in, then space out right for Chilwell with no cover

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,038 ✭✭✭circadian

Regroup and stack up with Cash this half, he needs help they've obviously identified that side as the weakest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭Esse85

Shocking from Traore standing and watching for the goal.

Pulisic keeps coming infield, dragging Traore in with him, leaving Cash highly exposed.

    Offensively we've offered nothing.

I really don't like having Jack in field, he's far more effective out on the left.

    Players are looking tired.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

I wouldn't mind Nakamba on, more energy and can help the full backs.
Smith doesn't often make half time subs though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,500 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

How was Pulisic’s swing at Cash not looked at by VAR? He kicked him flush In the face. Anywhere else on the pitch and that’s an instant red.

Whatever about red, I’ve no idea how the ref saw it, blew for it and didn’t even get a yellow.

Kante has also been allowed tactical foul after tactical foul without card.

    El Ghazi nicely.

    EL GHAZI AGAIN!!!

Still we played on with a Chelsea man down - although it was his tackle that injured him.....

We didn't feign we were going to put it out of play at least.
