Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Thought it was Barkley, but would need to see it again.
Ben Mee is a big strong guy, Luiz will struggle to block a guy like that.

Against Southampton, McGinn was the blocker for the defender who's about 6"6, can't think of his name, that's never gonna work, it's men vs boys, I'd rather see McGinn/Luiz defend the posts and let the better headers of the ball go attack it.

Defending set pieces. especially corners is still the major weakness in this side.

I know we have got much better this season with regards to this, but its so annoying to see Mings just standing in the center of the box watching a 6 foot 6 CB powering a header home while being trying to be marked by a 5 foot 9 CM.

It is a sickener tonight, but if you look at the Utd result as well, it just goes to show that football can just be a strange game. Better team on the night doesn't always win. God knows how many times over last few years we've dug out wins when completely outclassed.

Hopefully tonight will be a reminder to stop a bit if the showboating when on top, until the scoreline is at least comfortable

Some positives, Grealish outstanding again. His consistency is incredible. Some of the play in the first half was beautiful to watch. Watkins on the scoresheet again.

    Threw that game away.

Watkins needs to be more clinical for sure.
Gave away poor goals against a side that are awful going forward.

Shocking goalkeeping, went straight through his hands, you'd barely see it in an u12 match.
Glad for him, hope it's the first of many.

    Yes, good start for him.

I do think there’s room for improvement with our free kicks we’ve got into some good positions the last few games and not really took advantage, especially now we have Traore, Jack and Barkley

Louis Barry suffered a bad injury it looks like from his instagram, as his leg is in a protective boot.

Indiana Vassilev has been recalled from Burton Albion after a terrible loan spell there. He has subsequently joined Cheltenham Town on loan.

Henri Lansbury is wanted by Bristol City on loan.

Former keeper, Orjan Nyland is close to joining Norwich City on a short-term deal until the summer. He had surgery after being released in October.

Dean Smith in his press conference today stated that Villa are not looking for anyone else ahead of the deadline on Monday and is happy enough with the squad and the signing of Morgan Sanson.

Just to make ye (and I) all feel old, it's 21 years ago today when Carbone scored that hat trick against Leeds in the FA Cup.

    Another goal for Conor today.

Remember it well, Merson got flattened laying on Bennys third.
His second was a screamer, Jack scored similar against Southampton this season.

Game that sticks in my mind too. Beni's free kick was something else.

Should have been a peno. I don’t see how VAR didn’t call that as it was a clearer one than the one against man city

Joke alright, but wouldn't have been a red with the keeper behind him.

Southampton having shooting practice against us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

I think we're in trouble here, getting in too much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭Esse85

Martinez kicking has been poor so far.

High ball up to Watkins should be avoided, the two CB's will mop up high ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭Esse85

We've started the same way we finished against Burnley.
Southampton fouling a lot and stopping play, very cynical.

    Romeu is dominating our midfield.

    Barkley contributing nothing so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,093 ✭✭✭Patser

Southampton have learned from Burnley, they are getting stuck in and giving no time in midfield - Grealish is used to that and making his usual impact - but Barkley, McGinn, Traore are all getting hassled out of it, offering little, Luiz is being overworked to tidy up

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,797 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Finger needs to be removed from asshole sharpish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,093 ✭✭✭Patser

If Traore is going to abandon defence, and go chasing lost causes, McGinn has to cover and help out Cash. Traore left a huge gap behind him there for no reason

    It's been awful so far.

Barkley is gassed and offering zilch.

Now that was smart, and go shot Watkins

I'd like to see proactive subs in the second half, wouldn't mind giving Nakamba at least 20 minutes.

Yup, and yet not as per the rules. Another of those things where you’re wondering if the people who make these decisions watch football.

We have been truly awful also, but I will take this all day long!!!

Yeah we're definitely being outplayed in CM, it's a pity we haven't a physical player to take on Romeu.
Even AEW or Trez on for Traore at some point.

Am i the only one to think ball hits thigh hip area then his hand thus not a pen

    Absolutely.

We're back to same old problem with Barkley and McGinn - if you play both, the team is unbalanced. Barkley is effectively a false 9 forward, he offers so little in defence. McGinn also doesn't offer enough presence in midfield. So play both, midfield is defensively weak and opposition can control, going forward we're great though.

Nakamba, hopefully Sanson, restores that balance - Nakamaba allows Luiz roam more - at expense of forward threat.

That is why it wasn’t given. But when he moves his arm out wide like that, that shouldn’t stop the penalty being given IMO.

Would be fuming if that wasn’t given against us, and by the looks of that, it wouldn’t be.
