1998 finds ML 18 at the station in Waterford. This bus was delivered new to Dublin Bus in 1994, operating out of Ringsend Garage. Around 1996 it transferred to Bus Eireann in Waterford, to work on the city routes there. It kept its City imp livery from its days in Dublin. By 2002 it had moved to Cork where it became a school bus within the Bus Eireann fleet for about a decade.
In the background is Irish Rail locomotive number 124.

KR 109 makes its third appearance in this series but this time we are going back to earlier in its career to 1987. The bus is seen at the station in Wexford. It was delivered new to CIE in 1985, passing to Bus Eireann in 1987. It spent the majority of its career in the south-east of Ireland, and was withdrawn as a school bus around 2007.

1990 sees KC 163 in Cork on route 3 to Ballyphehane. This bus was originally given the registration number UZG 163 as most members of the KC class in that series entered service in 1985. However, KC 163 did not enter service until 1989 and therefore received the registration number 89 D 17144. Ten KCs in total were treated like this, with KC 169 being registered last in 1992.
KC 163 is in an allover ad for the Evening Echo. First published in 1892, the newspaper became The Echo in 2019 when it switched from an evening newspaper to a morning one.
Today route 203 runs from Lehenaghmore to Farranree via the city centre.

2007 sees probably the most branded bus in the Bus Eireann - DWR 10. This bus was one of twenty buses delivered in 2001 with a Wrights body on a DAF chassis. It was a regular on the Strabane to Stranorlar run as well as other local routes in County Dongeal. The sign in the window mentions connections with the Dublin bus in Lifford, hence all the branding on the bus. Around 2010 the bus transferred to the schools fleet and in 2012 it was put up for sale by Bus Eireann. Letterkenny 25/06/2007

1985 sees C 151 parked between duties at Stranorlar Garage in County Donegal. The bus was delivered new to CIE in 1966 and spent most of its career based in Sligo until it moved to Stranorlar in 1984. In 1986 it became a school bus and moved to Ballina. It was withdrawn by Bus Eireann in 1994. The bus is dressed for Ballybofey, a town on the other side of the river from Stranorlar. 01/07/1985

It later joined the Expressway fleet, as seen here, and was withdrawn around 1997. Mountbellew is currently served by route 65 (Friday only) and routes 425 and 425A. 11/07/1996

1985 sees a very busy KR 63 load up at Galway Station. This bus was delivered new to CIE just two weeks before this picture was taken. Around 2000 it joined the schools fleet in Galway, and was withdrawn by Bus Eireann around 2005.

Route 419 still connects Galway with Clifden today. 27/07/1985

Maybe I haven't realised until now, but I would associate that livery with the Bus Éireann rebrand - did all the KRs have it beforehand? I know the KC/KDs generally had the two-tone green and KEs red/orange.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,859 ✭✭✭Csalem

Yes all the KRs were delivered in that livery. It is a gross simplification, but the three companies basically adopted what they inherited from CIE with slight tweaks. Irish Rail took the SuperTrain livery of black and tan, changed the tan to orange and added white stripes. Dublin Bus took the two-tone green, tweaked the shades and added an orange stripe. Bus Eireann took the KR livery and basically made the yellow stripe orange instead.

CIE Provincial buses have been red/white since at least the 1960s.

1984 sees D 71 in Eyre Square, Galway, with a service on route 2 to Taylors Hill. At the time D 71 was one of the last remaining single-door Leyland Atlanteans in service. The bus was delivered new to CIE in 1967. It spent all its life in Galway and was withdrawn in late 1984.

Taylor's Hill is now served by route 402 which operates between Seacrest and Merlin Park. 18/08/1984

1986 sees CIE M 45 parked at the bus / rail station in Galway. This bus was delivered new to CIE in 1971, the same year it started to operate out of Galway. It remained in service there until it was withdrawn by Bus Eireann in 1999. It had become a school bus in 1991. In 2000 the bus entered preservation and still survives to this day.

The bus is dressed for the route to Spiddal and Carraroe, a route which it operated for many years. Today it is route 424 and is operated by the new VB Class of bus.

1985 sees CIE D 480 in Galway. This was the only member of the Leyland Atlantean D Class to receive the same two-tone green livery as the Bombardier KC and KD class. It received this livery earlier in 1985.

The bus was delivered new to Galway in 1973. It moved to Dublin in 1987 when it joined the Dublin Bus driving school. It was withdrawn in 1992 and went for scrap in 1993.

The bus is on the Eyre Square to Mervue route.

1997 sees Bus Eireann VC 56 in Balbriggan with a service on route 100 to Dublin. For many years route 100 was the main route to Dublin in Balbriggan, running from Dundalk and Drogheda. The 101 was a shorter version of the route that only operated between Dublin and Drogheda. However, in more recent years the 100 has been cut back to operate between Drogheda and Dundalk, whereas the 101 is the main route now on the Dublin to Drogheda via Balbriggan corridor. During college-term, there is still a service on route 100 that operates from Skerries to Dundalk via Balbriggan and Drogheda in the mornings.

VC 56 was delivered new to Bus Eireann in 1996. In 2006 it moved to Cavan and ended its career there on schools duty. It was withdrawn around 2016.

The Mourne Tour branding was for a tour that was run around the Mourne Mountains in and around the 1990s.

1993 sees Bus Eireann KR 143 in Wexford. The bus is in a special livery / all-over ad for Crazy Prices. It was used on a special shuttle service in the town to the supermarket. KR 2 and KR 219 had been used on a similar service around Finglas in Dublin.

KR 143 was delivered new to CIE in 1985. Originally based in Broadstone Garage in Dublin, it transferred to Waterford Garage in 1992 to take up this service in Wexford. It was withdrawn by Bus Eireann around 2000. 28/09/1993

1998 sees Bus Eireann ML 17 at the bus / railway station in Waterford. The bus was one of twenty delivered to Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann between in 1994. ML 1 - 15 went to Dublin while ML 16 - 20 went to Waterford for city services there (although they were originally all meant to go to Dublin Bus).

ML 17 moved to Cork school's fleet in the early 2000s and was withdrawn around 2010.

In the background in the station can been seen wagons belonging to one of the sugar beet trains.

1984 sees CIE KC 137 departing Drogheda bus station with a service to Clogherhead. This bus, along with KC 138 and KC 139, were delivered new to Drogheda in September 1984. They were a short-term measure to cover the gap between the withdrawal of some C Class buses and the imminent arrival of new KR Class buses. The buses later transferred to Dublin and were based out of Clontarf Garage.KC 137 was withdrawn by Dublin Bus around 1999.

For many years the Drogheda to Clogherhead was served by route 189. In November 2020 it was absorbed into an extended route 168 which runs from Dundalk to Drogheda via Clogherhead.

1995 sees Bus Eireann BM 93 parked in Roscommon between school duties. This bus was originally built in 1977 for use by the armed forces in the United Kingdom. This bus joined the Bus Eireann fleet in 1992 as a school bus and was withdrawn around 2000. 24/10/1995

1994 sees Bus Eireann M 167 parked at the bus station in Drogheda. This bus was delivered new to CIE in 1972. In 1976 its original Leyland engine was replaced by a Cummins one (one of two M Class buses to have this modification done), and became MC 167 in the process. In 1996 it joined the schools fleet and 2001 it was withdrawn, though was saved for preservation. Most of the buses in the picture, including M 167, seem to be involved in getting the school children of Drogheda home.

A rare visit to Dublin this week as 2010 sees Bus Eireann DD 29 at the UCD Belfield terminus after arriving with a peak-hour service on route 103 from Kilmoon Cross.

DD 29 was delivered new to Bus Eireann in 2004. The 23 members of the DD fleet were the first double-decker buses bought by Bus Eireann since its inception in 1987. The first twenty were based in the Dublin region, with another 3 used in Cork on Park & Ride services. Over time the fleet spread around the country but all were withdrawn by 2020.

Route 103 used to serve a variety of destinations from Dublin but now is confined to covering the Dublin - Ashbourne - Ratoath corridor, and no longer serves places like Kilmoon Cross or Duleek.

This terminus in UCD Belfield is now a lake.

2007 sees Bus Eireann VR 26 parked between duties on route 126 at the station in Kildare. This route transferred to Go-Ahead Ireland in December 2019, significantly reducing Bus Eireann's presence throughout County Kildare.

VR 26 was delivered new to Bus EIreann in 2000. It was one of fifty-five VRs operated by the company. By 2010 VR 26 was a school bus in the north west of Ireland and was finally withdrawn in 2015. 02/11/2007
