“Experts fear the US coronavirus death toll could be DOUBLE the official figures at up to 160,000 due to inconsistencies in reporting and ongoing testing shortages as Trump champions reopenings“

    From the daily mail.
    Wouldn’t be surprised.

How many times has Trump ever owned up to wrongdoing in his life? Regarding his response to the Coronavirus, the closest he would get to admitting he was any less than perfect would be to blame his advisors. Push him a bit more, and he'd say his failing was not to listen to his instincts (which were correct, of course), instead deciding to take on the opinion of (so-called) experts who were propped up by the fake news media.

He's one of those people in the job interview that says "If anything, my biggest flaw is that I care too much". :D

Just on that has anyone done an analysis of excess deaths in the US over the average for this time of year? Saw one done on the UK last week and its not pretty.

Looking at the news item from yesterday where Andrew Cuomo got a slating over the number of covid-19 deaths in care homes, I had a look to see if the report was true. Bill De Blasio has got a slating as well as it's NY Law that rest homes are obliged to take in patients discharged as recovering from hospitals, while there are other care home residents dying from Covid-19 complications.

It seems New York is not the only state that has this legal obligation being enforced on care homes. Given that its factual that testing for Covid-19 on live patients is problematic on two points [ability and availability] and the various methods used to work out who is a Covid-19 death victim and whom may be declared not a victim, the death figure released daily may be conservatively economic factually.

NY City is burying unclaimed Covid-19 victims in pits on a island there, a century long method of doing so. I strikes me that if the victim is unclaimed, they may not be identifiable and therefore not included in the death figures [unless as John Doe or Jane Doe].

Given that Nov is not only about the presidency but also about governor-ships and both Chambers of Congress. i'd imagine that Governors will have to face the wrath of the voters as well then.

I didn't realise that DJT had a proper meltdown over Obama at the weekend:

    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1259561821289226248?s=19

That being just one of many.

Honestly, with the likes of Fauci isolating and Pence now probably isolating, surely it's only a matter of time before he's "got".

He Tweeted/Retweeted over 100 times on Sunday , just unreal.

You also have the bizarre situation where last week he was telling everyone that Mail-in voting was criminally fraudulent and evidence that the "Dems are trying to steal the election"

Now this week when California opened up some in-person voting places for the Congressional Special election having already sent out mail-in voting cards to all voters that is now Fraudulent and evidence that the "Dems are trying to steal the election!!!!"

So Mail-in voting is fraudulent and in-person voting is also fraudulent , but only if they aren't voting for Trump - The ONLY in-person voting place that he name checked and complained about is one in a typically Democrat area (although the have a GOP Mayor in the township) , not a word of complaint about the in-person voting in the other locations which historically have voted GOP.

Within days of Obama endorsing Biden, and the leaked audio yesterday, the Donald goes after Obama, from the safety of his trolling 'Executive Time'. More petty, corwardly behavior from a man who isn't fit to lick Obamas shoes.

And I see his loyal followers like Jim Corr parroting exactly what Trump is saying. Proper sheeple.

Is it his tax returns ? I say a headline that trump will claim "absolute immunity" in regards to subpoenas in Supreme Court case but I didn't click into the link. So trump is more or less that he as president is aboveboard legally issued subpoenas so more or less above the law.

This and the fact that the Senate and judiciary are more than happy to break the law to enable him authoritarian powers outside of the US Constitution are why a lot of talk of "who will win in November" is irrelevant as there likely won't be a fair and open election come November, if any election at all.

I've gone from thinking there was a (worryingly high) 20ish percent chance of this a year ago, to closer to 50 as the likes of the Ukraine debacle carried on, to probably about 70% now if not more, following his and his supporters open support of terrorism, the Senate openly admitting that they have allowed him to break the law following the Ukraine scandal with no sign of that abaiting, and now his department of Justice even more blatantly attacking the rule of law in a way you would expect to see in Putosn Russia, or 1930s Germany.

And only a few weeks ago republicans intentionally made it so anyone in wisconsin who wanted to vote would have to run a huge risk fo catching coronavirus, by outright lying about the law to not allow mail in ballot extensions and then closing 175 of 180 polling stations in Milwaukee alone to force everyone to huddle close together and run a huge risk of getting ill or possibly dying of they had the audacity to try and exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Then you've got the rampant election fraud from GOP officials in Georgia's and North Carolina, including hard deleting all records of said votes so they could not even be investigated.

Just like he did with the Mueller report 'summary', and just like his appearances in front of Congress following them, it should come to the surprise of absolutely nobody that William Barr outright lied in order to claim a man who had plead guilty. Should never have been investigated at all - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/10/opinion/bill-barr-michael-flynn.html?referringSource=articleShare

America is very likely beyond saving at this point, to be perfectly honest.

Dont forget his influencing of the Roger Stone trial where he was tweeting certain members of the jury and the Judge were politically biased against him.

Its worrying what effect this and his/Mitch's stacking of the courts with judges will have on the US judiciary going forward

The obamagate nonsense was top thing on Twitter all last night with about 1 million tweets when I last looked including James Woods leading fanfare

So yeah it's clearly a tactic. Get hundreds of thousands talking Obama as biggest conspirator in US history to get minds off possibly hundreds of thousands of US deaths from Covid 19

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Well the American system is just nuts in terms of letting politicians appoint the judges to courts, rather than having judges make that decision on merit

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,779 ✭✭✭✭briany

If deaths do hit 160,000, Trump would probably call that a very good outcome, and would probably be slammed on that choice of words, at which point he would counter slam the media as being out to get him.

While it's true that 160,000 people is but a fraction of a percent of the population of the USA population, it's also true that America has gone to war over a much smaller portion of its citizenry dying, so there's obviously more to how important it is that a group of people have died than how large that group is. Trump or his acolytes must know this on some level because they cannot win the battle of rhetoric to say it was all par for the course. Already he has been firmly blaming China over this, and that ties in well enough with his broadly anti-China attitude.

It probably suits Donald Trump quite well that most of the current US outbreak is confined to the northeast of the country because it means that not everyone elsewhere in the States feel the worst of Donald Trump's leadership with regard to COVID-19, and by that I mean having loved ones who died or knowing people whose loved ones have died. They may be under lockdown, but Trump can use that to be a great man by championing the ease of restrictions, as he has done.

But what could well and truly sink Trump is a resurgence of the virus as the election nears. NYC isn't the only large city in the states and there are a lot of other potential hotspots around the country if people aren't careful. All you need is a good summer to make people carefree and complacent and this could lead to problems as the weather turns colder. And I would suspect that in the event of resurgence, Trump would be most hesitant to pause the economy, just as most governments would, to be fair. But the alternative could just as bad, to pretend it's not happening, or to try and cover it up.

It's the Trumpian fever Dream where Obama and Clinton are out to get him and the whole "Russian Hoax" was cooked up by Obama to thwart the one and only Donald J Trump.

The theory is that it was Obama who personally got Comey et al to investigate Trump and to invent evidence of collusion just because he hated Trump and wanted to stop him from becoming President.

It's the suggestion that everything which Trump and his allies/cohorts/staff have been accused of doing in relation to collusion with the Russians in order to influence the Presidential election was a fabrication which was initiated by a trail of Democrats which led to Obama.

It ignores the reality of the number of people from Trumps allies/cohorts/staff who have been charged, plead guilty and been prosecuted for some of their acts.

It is a deflection tactic to try to distract people from the unmitigated disaster that his Presidency has been over the last 3 months and he and his supporters are petrified that people will see him for what he is and will not vote for him in November.

Well. This is a perfectly normal country, behaving perfectly normally. Now, the whole thing has the air of the staged, there were only 11 people and I don't know "The News & Observer" - so take whatever pinch of salt you feel is necessary. Still though:

Rocker launchers For FREEDOM. And Subway sandwiches. Yes, the article says the launcher is "inert", but IMO that's really not the point.

I will say: the random couple caught in the middle, the father laughing and exclaiming out-loud "you're trash people ..." deserves a medal for restraint and good humour in the face of insanity.
A dozen people walked through downtown Raleigh Saturday afternoon with weapons and flags on the first full day of North Carolina’s Phase 1 — when some coronavirus-related restrictions have been loosened.

While the group attracted some curious onlookers, they are getting even more national attention online, thanks to now-viral photos by News & Observer photojournalist Travis Long and a meme of the protesters created by a woman in Ohio.

The protesters are seen in photos ordering sandwiches from Subway on Fayetteville Street. One is carrying an AT4 rocket launcher, with a sticker saying “inert” on it, slung over his back. The man also has two pistols in holsters on his waist.

Still waiting for someone over there to come up with a reasonable argument about why a Joe Soap member of the public needs to own an automatic weapon. Been waiting for a long long time now. Murica is a strange place, and it's getting stranger by the day.

More wondering myself what purpose owning and carrying around defanged rocket launcher is meant to declare. Whatever about stretching the 2nd amendment to near breaking point, it reads like openly confrontational, hostile behaviour to carry around something of such singularly violent purpose. Idiots they may be, but one wonders what the next emotional trigger point would be. If Fox / Trump cried "coup" at a democrat victory, where would these guys with their Stars n Stripes automatic weapons be?

You don't think at least some of the trump angst has anything to do with the virus getting way too close for comfort? Its suddenly threatening him, and you know how smart and invisible it is, he must be in bits wondering when it will get him - especially since he has now established that you can test negative and still then get a positive...

One does have to remember that these are really a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of a percent of the people. They in no way represent the majority or even the common. Sure, gun owners are very vocal and very numerous, but most of them are law abiding citizens with no more intent on starting a coup as the choir boy. They love their guns, love that they has the constitutional right to own them, but are no more represented by those nut jobs that you are I are.

If Trump loses will you get a few wackos thinking they are Captain America? Probably, but so few as to make no real difference.

They make lots of noise, and of course attract the media and TV crews, but 300 people? The state probably has multiple millions of people in it

Oh that’s for sure it is a small minority that are the real gun nuts, but there is a sizeable Minority too that really like their guns and whilst they wouldn’t be out brandishing them like those fools they still have an unhealthy attachment to them and claim ridiculous things like if someone broke into your house you’d be glad of them, whilst in reality they have a large collection of weapons that aren’t just for home invasion security.

Looking at the financial mess the virus has made of the U.S economy, causing closures of production lines and sales outlets [both vital tax earners points for the Govt] yesterday's news reports [naturally following up on events] that both Political Parties are in agreement that there must be another federal assist to business [which Don seems in agreement with if the parties allow the pegging-onto it of another tax refund cheque to each taxpayer], the report that Don wants to give $5 Billion to the farmers in exchange for them giving their product - which they would otherwise have to destroy - to food banks for people on the breadline, and Mr Mnuchin expressing doubt if there should be a 4th hand-out to business from the treasury, along with demands from the treasury to BIG business firms to return funding loans they got [which were intended for small businesses anyway]. it looks like Mnuchin is getting worried about the amount of $ still in the till. If there is a liquidity problem, Don would do anything to distract from it.

On the other side of the world, in Saudi Arabia, the crown prince has ordered a 1 million barrell per day cut in oil production, a cutback of 26 billion in planned project funding and a VAT hike from 5 to 15% on oil, all as a result of the effect Covid-19 has within the kingdom. I don't know how far the S/A oil product cutback will affect international oil prices but given how it was only two weeks ago that it and Russia [with urging from Don and other world leaders] agreed to stop their price war and bring peace to that market, the cut-back news must have an effect in the market [incl in the U.S - where the shale oil production is reportedly in a financial loss-mess]
