U.S. President Donald Trump fired the State Department’s inspector general following a recommendation by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the White House said on Saturday.

(can't characterise Reuters as having any bias)

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney on Saturday denounced President Donald Trump's firings of internal government oversight officials, calling it a "threat to accountable democracy."

    https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/16/politics/mitt-romney-trump-inspector-general-firing/index.html

Amazing that the Republicans pick to be 'their guy' is now the only Republican who will speak out against Trump

Inspectors-general should not begin investigations into the improper use of Dept staffers by the boss [Mike Pompeo] to do household domestic chores for the boss [Mike Pompeo] and his missus, ;)

    ....

I'm wondering how, the tabloid media keeps ignoring let's say, Melania living elsewhere in DC and the rest...

    ......

It's weird it is never questioned. Definitely covid and isolation has helped.

Imo, to all intents and purposes Trump and Melania are separated/not a married couple any more. I predict she will file for divorce after the election in November

Or perhaps its that supposed Kompromat that's meant to exist

Had wondered about that, isnt the rumour that Putin has footage of Trump in a hotel in Russia with four prostitutes? If that video actually exists and leaks as an October surprise we're in for some fun times.

Otherwise I thought it notable that Obama had a dig at the administration last night. Theres a general unwritten rule that a president doesnt criticise his predecessor but Trump has long thrown that out the window and now he's building his Obamagate conspiracy theory during election season. Im wondering if Obama is going to get the gloves off and act like an attack dog for Biden in response. I dont seem him staying silent during the campaign and especially not if Trump keeps pushing Obamagate.

He should lacerate Trump every day until the election. All semblance of protocol is gone and that's down to Trump.

The rule held because as you say former presidents didnt criticise their successors as we saw with bush 43 and Obama and they even became friends. I think it also stems from them being part of a very select group. But as you say the checks and balances and rules written or otherwise mean nothing anymore.

I hope Obama doesn't lower himself but given that trump has at times gone in hard on Obama there's only so much a person can take.

Like him or not Obama is a very articulate man and a superb public speaker in general. No chance of him lowering himself down to the gutter level that is the current administration IMHO.

Trump uses insults like Saddam used Scud missiles-makes lots of noise, is easily countered and is highly inaccurate.

If Obama fired back, it be like a precision guided cruise missiles- highly accurate, devastating to its target and very difficult to knock down.. For me, Obama be like the great Muhammed Ali:

"Float like a Butterfly; Sting like a Bee". If Trump keeps poking Obama like he has been, he's gonna get a verbal ass- whuppin. ..

There's also the simple fact that Trump is irrationally triggered by Obama. From the Birther racism, to the constant bad mouthing, attempts to discredit the admin, to dismantling all his signature work, Trump has frequently shown to be easily wound up by Obama. That said, Obama ain't that popular himself in certain quarters so as entertaining as his rhetoric might be, it could drive moderates back into the fold of Trump.

... ever since Obama humiliated him at The White House Correspondents dinner - an event which Trump never again attended.

No ,Obama is all of that but dialogue with Trump is like lying down with a dog with fleas and even Obama would be contaminated

It is best to ignore Trump when possible but Obama may feel he does not have the luxury.

I am not sure who will come out best between the two of them (and us spectators with a stake in the outcome) but Obama will surely come out of it with most of his reputation intact.

Yeah I think all bets are off as far as protocol goes at this stage. Obamagate has left him with no option but to respond. Plus it seems by pushing Obamagate what Trump is trying to do is link it all back to Biden so Id be expecting the conspiracy theory to become part of the Presidential campaign rhetoric. Which means Obama is going to get attacked a lot between now and November and he wont be remaining silent about it.

It could turn out to be a strategic miscalculation by Trump, instead of just fighting Biden and his VP pick he's now opening up another front against Obama.

Some say it was that incident that pushed Trump to run for President. In the video footage you can see Trump absolutely seething at Obama humiliating him in front of the American media

How sad is it that after a term in office all an incumbent has to try claw onto his power desperately is to still bang on about the previous administration. He has absolutely nothing to point too despite having total control of Congress up until the midterms. It is an attack line that only makes sense in a racist angle really because actually going at the previous administration (hilariously quite often for conduct that he is actively in court arguing he has the power to do, and more) after a full term in office displays an awful lot of weakness straight off the bat. I mean, it makes a mockery of his entire first campaign for a start with how easy everything would be for him, the super genius to solve.

It is truly mind boggling how little respect he has for his supporters level of intelligence, and more to the point, how often they prove him right in that.

I see they are trying to pin the blame on thr CDC now

And soon they'll link that organisation to Obama

CDC were poor, and guess who installed the head of the CDC despite being advised not to based on his handling of the AIDS epidemic back in the day? The commander in chief of course. It's laid out in that ft article that was shared here actually iirc

"WE NEED TO BUILD THE WALL, THEY ARE CARRYING COVID19 ACROSS THE BORDER!" - would be accurate if it was tweeted by the Mexican President ...

The media, obviously. How dare they report on his response, which has clearly been above reproach? CNN should be ashamed of themselves for questioning him

Don't forget the folks who were so 'unhealthy' as to have co-morbidities. Those pesky co-morbidities are to blame as well, and who could have known those minority and poor folks were so 'un-healthy' as to maybe need good health insurance to be able to access the US health system. Like, Obama should have known and het he did nothing...

Oh wait, Obamacare!! That thing Mitch, Trump and the rest of the Grim Reaper brigade have been trying to dismantle for years now!

Is the wall even mentioned by US media anymore? And whats its status, will it become a mark of his failure during the election campaign given how central it was to the last election campaign.

It comes up every now and again but like every other policy failure those that are deep in the Trump cult will see the small amount that was built and US taxpayers paid for as being a great success and/or blame others for it not being what was promised during the campaign.

For most it was just a catchphrase during the election and they couldn't care less if it was built or not. Many of Trump's surrogates during the election claimed that he didn't mean a real wall.

He'd tried to run before that, the narrative that 2016 was his first try is standard Trump nonsense to make him appear like he never loses.

At that point Trump was knee deep in the birther stuff and that was obviously already a play for a run by getting him on side with the right wing conspiracy nut jobs that are still his base today.
