Who are some your clubs cult icons?
Not the most talented player but struck a chord with the fanbase, perhaps due to their limited skill level.

I would suggest Titi Camara for Liverpool, shone briefly and brightly in the premier league.

    Tim Cahill

To be fair, he was probably your best player.

True, him or Arteta. But Cahill loves Everton and I loved him growing up so will always be my cult hero :pac:

For the teams he played in their are bigger names such as Rush, Dalglish, Hansen, Beardsley etc. etc. but for me it was Jan Molby. Always liked the guy and he had some amount of sublime skill.

    Ray Parlour , Jon Jensen

David Fairclough, Maxi Rodriguez, Kolo Toure, Gary Mac - they are cult heroes for Liverpool for different reasons but none of them were star names and/or long lived. Oh and
    Djimi Traore
    obviously! :pac:

Not a Liverpool fan, but I loved watching Molby play. He was a great passer of the ball. And a great Scouse accent too. :D

Posted a video in the last Villa thread about a village in Ghana and this is a quote from a young lad being interviewed in it remembering talking to his grandpa:

"Who is that god you are talking about? Because you all know there is only one god and he is in heaven, and he laughed and told me that there is a god in football and his name is Paul McGrath"

That right there is a cult icon!

From a Newcastle point of view the first one that comes to mind is Nobby Solano.

From the same era Titus Bramble was an icon for mostly the wrong reasons

Fire my first ever post in the soccer forum I would like to nominate Jesper Olsen.
A tricky little winger who I used love to watch.

Gary Mabbutt. Always gave it all on the pitch, not many can say they woke up to find a rat having nibbled away one of your toes to the bone.

    Currently : Divock Origi

    Recently : Kuyt or Lucas

    Old School : John Aldridge

No prizes for guessing who I support... :)

David Luiz wouldn't have been a top top CB at Chelsea, but he was a cult hero his first time round, with his floppy hair and PlayStation style.

But mainly because of his floppy hair.

    Park Ji-Sung.

Has to be John O'Shea. Played in goal when called upon, scored a wonderful lob against Arsenal that surprised himself more than anyone, nutmegged Figo, a crucial smash-and-grab winner in front of the Kop. What a career.

Perry Groves is an obvious one.

    Vinnie Jones at Leeds.

    Vinnie Jones at Leeds.

Vinnie is the reason I started supporting Leeds!

David Batty would be up there and always had soft spot for Mel Sterland.

Not a Liverpool fan either but i loved watching Molby play. Such an intelligent player and his passing range was unreal.

I would say Origi will definitely looked back on as cult icon, probably due to the invaluable goals that he has scored.

Shaun Goater. Always and forever my cult hero - as a footballer as well as a top class guy.

A day and a half in. Still no Lee Trundle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Andrei Kanchelskis for me. Still had a jersey with his name on it until recently enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,711 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

Cantona at United (and I say this as a Liverpool fan).

For me, cult is not just about the quality, it's the attitude and personality and that x-factor I-don't-give-a-****-what-people-think mentality.

EDIT - for the "my club" pedants: Suarez

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Rafael for me. Was no size at all but always dogged into tackles and never backed down if it got testy. Scored a few screamers too.

    Is he?

I'm surprised. At national level he seemed to be the opposite of a cult hero, he scored a gazillion goals and people still moaned about his celebration or because he waved to the referee or whatever it was.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,475 ✭✭✭KaiserGunner

Christopher Wreh (Arsenal) might be one. Scored a few vital goals in the title run in and FA cup run in 97/98 when Bergkamp and Wright were missing, season Arsenal went on to win the double. He didn’t do much at Arsenal after, but will be remembered for that alone. Was George Weah cousin as well I think.

    Steffan Freund

Despite being a German international and playing for some big clubs he was a very limited midfielder for Spurs. But his attitude was great, he loves the club and I believe he's been back and sat with regular fans to watch a game.

A legend despite his playing ability which is exactly what a cult icon should be.
