Gone all day. Just home and heard about the latest poll. What was that about?
I am not sure I buy that it was all to do with the Tan celebration but I know that made a lot of people quite angry.

    What this Leo say?
Mr Varadkar said the election should happen at the best time for the country: “now is that time.”

I think that was a blatant lie. Now is not a good time. Leo wanted a summer election but he knew he didn't have the numbers especially if Maria Bailey was rumoured to be pulling her support. Calling the election now means he has to deal with the Trolley crisis, the Tan celebration, the Homeless issues and the Crime wave.

irrelivance and being run by terrorists with communist tendancies are two completely different things.

I guess those reds' are still under your bed.

I don't agree that transport needs to be first but it still needs to be done. This would be the push needed nd could part finance it . As for alternatives not available there are!

ok, somebody lives in ginnets in meath, they work in PWC on north wall quay in dublin, its a 55km commute that in a car typically takes 1.5 hours , their car uses 6l/100km of fuel so theyre using about 7 litres of fuel a day so just under a 10er in fuel , their tax and insurance costs 2.40 a day (280 tax, 650 insurance paid anually) and lets say maintenance is another euro a day , they own the car outright so theire current expenditure on commuting to and from work is :

13.50 per day, 2.5-3 hours total commute time

whats their alternative and what does it cost them in money and time ? and I mean an alternative they could do next week, like not 'in the future' stuff....

The poll is a total outlier. Doesn't represent the views of the nation at all.

    Even Mehole Martin acknowledge that.

FG are doing well on the doorstep. Older people are happy with their performance and they are the ones who will vote in their droves.

.......and die in their droves on trolleys the way the health service is going.

How well did Michael Martin do in his term as Health Minister?

Very few Eric, and no more so than in beds.

Speak to medical professionals and they will tell you they are sick to their teeth with the media obsession with trolleys. They care about patient outcomes - of which there is no evidence that patients on a trolley are more at risk.

That opinion 'FG are doing well on the doorsteps' seems to be the outlying one today.
It's only a poll but most observers knew there would be a fall in FG support.

*I am no fan of Michael Martin but is there any need for the juvenile nicknames?

Article from Eamonn Ryan at the moment trying to distance himself from tax increases and green measures that negatively impact voters. Any and I mean any party or individual who thinks "SuRe We HaVe To Do It" is going to get a spanking and are delusional.

The idea that people are just choosing the car and any of these measures to 'encourage people out of their cars' need to be stopped dead. The working people of Ireland have little time for this at the moment.

Better than Leo anyway, Martin's claim to fame in health was the smoking ban. Can't think of one for Leo, maybe you can.

I live in commuter town not by choice, an hour away from work depending on the traffic, there is no direct public transport to where I work and all bus routes essentially go into the centre of Dublin rather than routes that might work for those who are working in any of the business campuses around Dublin.

Michael claimed vociferously on his RTE This Week interview - that teachers and medical professionals could trust him based on his previous ministerial performances in both education and health. The claim went unchallenged by the interviewer. So it must be true. :)

Unless we got a government who has the balls to break apart the health service and rebuild from the ground up I don't expect much to change under any party.

We can go back and fourth about politicians all day here but in reality the healt service isnt getting fixed till we crush the unions and kick out all the middle management in the HSE.

A boardcasting charge will be brought in no matter who is the governing party.

That is a very specific example and not being familiar with that area I can't answer nor be expected to.

However, they could share with a person in the general area doing the same journey or to that part of Dublin.

If they could afford it they could buy an EV.
They could drive a short journey to bus or rail station and continue from there.

Anyway the point I am making is that they will be pushed in the direction of using less fossil fuels through pain in their pocket. It isn't meant to be totally painless.

Health - smoking ban and HSE. TBH he was a bit of a Varadkar in there, lots of bravado about what he was going to do and did very little. Education, seriously? It's 20 years ago so who remembers!

so the only real viable alternative is to chock up 35k for an EV which you accept is painful and expensive.

Champagne socialist or would these be clarified as champagne greens, let the peasants buy an EV. "What's that the bums cannot afford 35K *drops hipster glasses" oh dear."

It's like a modern day "let them eat cake" .

Do you really believe that fossil fuels won't increase in price? This will happen under any Government.

Fossil fuel users will have to cope with these increses anyway but they can make a change when buying their next vehicle, this would act s as push.

MM's major claim to fame in Health was setting up the HSE I'd have thought.

I believe that viable alternatives at a reasonable cost should be encouraged, if it was easier or cheaper to go to work on public transport, people would. At the moment your and many others solution is just to extract more money from people who either cannot afford to change their ways or for whome there is no alternative.

I think more or less every party has signed up to Sláintecare.

Be very afraid if some party pulls a brand new health reform policy out of their back pocket in this election campaign.

So what do FG do now?

How do they get at Martin who seems to me anyhow to have boxed a very clever game.

Will we see it get dirty or will FG try to rest on promote their laurels

If you want actual ideas on transport look here https://twitter.com/DublinCommuters/status/1218104865852985344?s=19

Yeah a coalitions of greens and cranks with a vendetta against the transport mode that the overwhelming majority of irish people choose to use

Great place to look for ideas
