The amount of election posters hung in dangerous positions in Dublin 15 is disgraceful, I travel all over Dublin and it seems like once you get back to Blanch it's a free for all - every "guideline" in the book is broken.
I'd love to rip some of the really bad ones off myself however after reading this article I wouldn't dare... https://www.herald.ie/news/courts/coachs-moment-of-madness-drove-him-to-tear-down-by-election-posters-38919879.html
Who can one complain to regarding improperly placed posters?

  • Registered Users Posts: 186 ✭✭jd1983

    No. Just no.

There's the build cost. There's services. There's ongoing maintenance. Social housing is very necessary but it is by definition a giant money pit.

A bigger money pit then HAP payments and hotel rooms?

Services? This outlay is necessary for houses built by the private market too.

Ireland is part of an international organisation whose law is superior to ours. The first time a French person or Cypriot holding company or dodgy bloke from Croatia is refused access to the property market, any such law would be struck down.

Can I assume based on the countries listed above that this EU law only applies to EU citizens? If so then restrict the ban to non EU citizens. Anecdotally I keep hearing of Russian oligarchs, Chinese, Arabs and American companies purchasing property on a large scale. So a ban to non EU citizens would still be very effective.

I noticed today Aointu had posters on the N3 inbound on 2 of the bridges at Blanchardstown.

    I believe this is illegal.

Except that people that rent social houses generally don't pay their rent, so there is no money. I don't think the plan of Sinn Fein and others promising housing is to come down hard on council tenants, so there won't be money from that source.

    https://www.thesun.ie/news/4963197/dublin-city-council-33million-tenants-arrears-unpaid/

"ALMOST two thirds of Dublin City Council tenants are in rent arrears, with the total unpaid rising by over €4m to almost €33m during 2019.

New figures show 25 households now owe the local authority at least €27,000 each, with the largest single debt standing at €38,000."

To be fair that's a terribly written article, it feels like it's hand picking stats to fit a narrative. If there's problems collecting rent compared to some time in the past (no detail from article?) where arrears was €4m, then steps can be taken to address this. It would be a lot more effective then squandering tax payers money into the black hole that is HAP and hotel rooms for homeless.

    blanch152 wrote: »
Low interest loan from whom? As I pointed out already, the rent simply won't be paid so there will be less self-sufficiency. In fact, the last time I looked at the issue, the annual maintenance bill for social housing was higher than the rent taken in.

Have you a source for the annual maintenance bill being higher then rent in take. You haven't demonstrated that rent won't be paid, you simply pointed out that arrears happens.

I take it you mean Broombridge?

Yes, the industrial estate there should be rezoned for housing, but that is in private hands, not owned by the council, so you would have to add the cost of acquiring the land.

Yes Broombridge could be rezoned for housing and I didn't necessarily mean it would be social housing. We need a mix of private and public housing and ideally public housing would be built on land that is already publicly owned.

    blanch152 wrote: »
Can't do that, as it would be in breach of EU law.

I'm not very comfortable with a narrative that continues to say our hands are tied because of the EU, this narrative was very prevalent in the UK over the past few decades and has led to Brexit. If it is in breach of EU laws then we could work with neighboring countries who also have housing problems to overcome such issues.
Last year Mark Durcan and Emer Currie canvassed my house and this narrative obviously rubbed off on Mark from his time in Westminster. I queried a couple of points and his standard answer was that stuff can't be done cos of the EU. I checked a few of his answer and the EU excuse was complete rubbish.

The Blanch centre roundabout entrance to The Millennium park has 100cm high wooden bollards now with triangular posters protruding from every one all from the same candidate, almost every pole around Hartstown has them all the way down to the ground it's almost every single location that you look you see them in dangerous positions.

Think of Tipperary. They have to look at them for another few weeks.

Jack Chambers having a terrible night on Claire Byrne Live.

Yeah, Chambers is trending on twitter this evening for his petulance and multiple meltdowns on the Clare Byrne debate.

Not quite, we have the president, the council of state and the supreme court to oversee them.

But back to the general election in Dublin West, has Peter Casey got posters up? Haven't spotted any.

Casey has a big ‘10 reasons not to vote for LEO’ sign up at coolmine station.

He has said he isn’t canvassing or postering in the area.

Reminder: can we keep the thread focused on D15 issues? Dublin City Council stats are not relevant for this discussion for example but if we could get Fingal Co Co stats that would be interesting and more relevant. General chat about council housing etc. can be done in Current Affairs or Politics. Thanks guys!

On-topic, I received my voting card in the post yesterday, I was starting to worry that it was late.

He was right to pull Claire Byrne up on it, he was asked a question about child porn as an opener in a climate change debate.

Certainly didn’t come across well though but the point he was making wasn’t wrong. When he got worked up it didn’t look good alongside others who are known to be calm in debate.

As you said, overall won’t do damage to his re-election.

CB had the right to ask him why that was in the Climate Change manefesto as I wasn't aware that FF lumped all thoses issues into the same department.

Sounds like FF are a bit stretched in that department but his over reaction was just mind blowing. Reminded me of his last tv debate a few years ago too.

Also when he is asked any tough questions at the door he has a handler to usher him away or answer calmy from what I have seen.

100% he should just answer calmly or like 99% of politicians waffle without giving an answer.

It is the department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment so they haven’t lumped it all in together. What they have done is. I different to any other manifesto because that is the Department.

It's smaller this time around. Less paper is always a good thing!

Based on my own personal experience the way the Register of Electors, is administered by the various Local Authorities is a complete and utter joke, that is open to abuse and personation.
Imagine if you could go to your Polling Station simply swipe your hypothetical National ID Card, which would automatically verify your ID. Upon verification the Polling Station Official would then issue you with your Ballot Paper and away you go and cast your vote in the usual manner.

So you're going with his line that RTÉ and Clare Byrne unfairly targeted him? If he can't handle soft questions he's not cut out for any form of public work, as he's proved on more than one occasion.

If this is directed at me I am not at all saying RTÉ unfairly targeted him and I’ve already said he should have just answered it in some shape or form.

What I do not disagree with him doing is questioning what relevance a question about child porn has to do with a debate on climate.

Was any other candidate questioned on the Communications part of their brief? (I didn’t see the debate in its entirety)

On his public work he looks to me like he has done quite well in his defence portfolio.

Any interest in me setting up a secret poll like this one just for our constituency to see how the land lies before Saturday?

RTÉ has a Twitter account and live tracker for every constituency which should make following things a little easier. The handle is @RTEdublinWEST and they’ve tweeted a link to the tracker.

She's had people standing at junctions holding large banners saying her seat is under threat. They were up at junction of Blanch Road and N3 yesterday morning and down by Blanch Road/ Clonsilla Road early this morning.

Methinks she might be a tad worried alright...

Well she's not wrong to be worried, is she? Only 2 out of 53 voters on our secret poll are giving her their first vote.

Two guys with a sheet on the Navan Road at the maple centre "f*CK Leo out on Saturday" and a hashtag I couldn't read in the rain. Poor darlings getting soaked

    That's exactly what I thought.

The leaflet that came through the door yesterday was basically "vote Ruth because she's a woman and men are all bastards".
