I like the two songs better. That's it really! Nothing more profound than that.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge

Nirvana - Come As You Are

    Two iconic sounding songs

This is tough love both these songs but Gwen gets it

    No Doubt - Don't speak

Love No Doubt and Gwen quirkiness

    R4/Match 6

    The Cranberries - Promises
    love Dolores voice

Don't Speak - just a timeless 90s song for me I could listen to any day

Rage Against The Machine - It got to Christmas number 1 as a fcuk you to Simon Cowell years and years after it was released. That's enough for me :P

    Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight

The more I’ve listened to this song through the comp the more I’ve fell in love with it.

Soundgarden - Black - Hole Sun

I prefer this to come as you are.

Garbage - Stupid Girl - two great songs by two bands I have a lot of time for, but Stupid Girl is simply a better song than Don't Speak.

The Cranberries - Promises - would've preferred if these two weren't against each other because both are great, but gonna go with The Cranberries because it was one of my nominations and Promises is their best song as far as I'm concerned. Wouldn't be mad if it lost to Rage here in fairness though.

    Garbage - Stupid Girl

    I love love love this

Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of

    Prefer this one

Don't Speak, just think its a better tune

    R4/Match 6
    The Cranberries - Promises
    vs
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of

Rage Against the Machine gets my vote as even all these years, its still an amazing song (and can almost get me headbanging, except I know it'll hurt for a week if I do it)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - not the best Pumpkins song

    Nirvana - just love nirvana

    No Doubt - Don't speak
Great song by a very good band. Definitely Fwen Stefani at her best.

    R4/Match 6
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of
What's not there to love about this song? Just an all round classic rock anthem that I may or may not join in when it pops up on my play list in the car.

Dont Speak - love both of these songs but while Garbage are the undoubtedly the better band overall I think Don't Speak edges this one as more of a classic song. If it was a different Garbage song (Push It or Only Happy When It Rains) then I may have voted differently.

Promises - an underrated song that I'm pleasantly surprised got this far, when it comes to the Cranberries only Linger would arguably be more deserving of progressing this far imo. Killing In The Name is great but a bit overplayed, easy to get a bit tired of hearing it.

Match 5: No Doubt (I just love it and I would vote it in most of the matches in this competition!!)
Match 6: Cranberries (Dolores was one of my most favourite vocalists ever!!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭lassykk

No Doubt - Really catchy tune from the 90s and gets the nod really because I disliked Stupid Girl when it was released (grew on me since)

Rage against the machine - Not a fan of the song its up against and this tune is a great one if it comes in a nightclub

Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of
    One of my nominations

3 Under the Bridge. My number 1 nomination such a good song

4 Come as you are - apparently I was the only person to nominate this which is weird, Nirvana's best song imo

5 No Doubt - I just really like it, is that a good enough reason? :D

6 Killing in the name of - We could use more bands like this around today, muppets running the world!

Toughie for me here cos both are my noms. Don't Speak was never a doubt for me though so I have to go with this. I remember seeing this video for the first time with my mom and it was the first time I realised that she could like "normal" music, like you know when you realise that your parents are ppl too

    Soundgarden Black Hole Sun

    Great guitar solo.

    No Doubt Don't Speak

One of the most memorable hits of nineties' chart music.

  • Registered Users Posts: 925 ✭✭✭angel eyes 2012

No Doubt - like Stupid Girl too but Don't Speak brings me right back to when I started college and meaningful lyrics.

    Edit. Abstain on second vote.

I've changed my mind in regards to Round4/Match 4
I don't like either song but would prefer if Nirvana Come As You Are got through. Therefore, a vote for Nirvana.

Stupid Girl for me - love both but this I was into at the time and remember a couple of great gigs

Rage - what a tune. I went to their free celebration gig when they got the Christmas number one and this was off the scale :)

Soundgarden-Black Hole Sun : The quintessential Soundgarden song with super vocals.

Rage Against The Machine-Killing In The Name Of : Because we need some metal and that Cranberries song doesn't scream classic to me.

Match 4 Blackstreet- No Diggity. Because it should be in the competition

Match 5 No Doubt- Don't Speak Has a beautiful tragic quality to it.

    And Nirvana ?

I don't think that match up is settled looks like 9 - 8 to Nirvana but they need another to make the quota.
Somebody above voted for come as you are and Soundgarden so I didn't count that not sure how Kolido will deal with that

RHCP also lol like they're through

    The Cranberries - Zombie
My favourite song by the Cranberries and it really shows off Dolores' vocal range.

    R4/Match 8
Sinead O Connor - Nothing Compares to You
This really shows off what an amazing voice that Sinead has.

I detest that Sinead O Connor song and thus will vote against it often.

So, REM because it isn't Sinead O'Connor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

The Cranberries - Zombie - tough call. I love both bands and both tracks are great, but Zombie is probably just a bit more iconic than The Universal.

R.E.M. - Losing My Religion - was hoping these wouldn't go head to head, both should be in the quarter finals, gotta go with R.E.M. though as Losing My Religion is one of my noms and such an epic song.

    R4/Match 7
    The Cranberries - Zombie

    Haunting, epic and iconic

    R4/Match 8
Sinead O Connor - Nothing Compares to You

Something very tragic and pleading about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,478 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

    Cranberries
    REM

The first gig I ever went to was these two :)
    0291e371a7ce8948686809f20377b283.jpg

That's not it my reason though. I never really liked The Universal, whereas I remember the first time I heard Zombie, holy shıt! After the niceties of the first album it blew me away. And I've never loved Nothing Compares and, though this isn't my favourite REM by a long stretch, they were such a part of my childhood I want them to progress

    Blur and REM

    The universal

I’m a bit of a blur fan and not so much a cranberries fan

    Nothing compares to you

It was written by Prince who we haven’t seen enough of in this competition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,115 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

Blur - not their greatest song, but I hate "Zombie"
REM - this would be a reasonable pick for tune of the 90s, kickstarted REM stint as one of the worlds biggest bands, and was very influential on the rise of alt-rock during the mid 90s (though it actually didn't even make the top 10 in the UK at the time).

    Cranberries - Zombie

Whilst I am a fan of The Universal I think this is the Cranberries best track and deserving of a place in the next round. Dolores' voice is exceptional and it's a song I'd still listen to today

    Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

This was exceptionally tough as I am a big REM fan and really like Losing my Religion but I am basing this off the fact that I loved this track when I heard it first in the 90s and still love it today. My fondness for rock music only developed in my late teens so I have to give the nod to Sinead on this one for longevity!

Zombie - monster chorus and overall just a better song than The Universal imo.

Nothing Compares 2 U - beautiful song with a haunting vocal. Losing My Religion is good but REM have better songs imo.
