    Blur - The Universal

    vs

    The Cranberries - Zombie

I'm not mad about either so I abstain.

    R4/Match 8

Sinead O Connor - Nothing Compares to You

    vs

    R.E.M. - Losing My Religion

My vote is for Losing My Religion because of the nice mandolin work, plus I am a bit tired of the other song.

My abstention and my vote above.

Blur the universal. Great song from a great band

Sinead o connor. I do like that REM song but I think sinead is a more iconic 90s classic

    7-4 to the cranberries
    6-4 to sinead

Is there a secret irish bias in us I wonder lol

The Cranberries - Zombie - This is a great song, and I don't think The Universal is Blur's best.

R.E.M. - Losing My Religion - I nominated this song so i'm sticking with it.

Match 7 - Blur - The Universal. Not a Blur fan at all, but this is one of their few songs that I actually like.

    Match 8 - No opinion

Blur - The Universal. Not a big Blur fan, but really like this song, find it kind of uplifting. Zombie is a good song but prefer Blur's

    R4/Match 8
R.E.M. - Losing My Religion. Big REM fan (mainly early stuff) and always liked this song. Nothing Compares is good, but ive got fed up hearing it to be honest.

    The Cranberries - Zombie
not my fave cranberries song but defo beats Blur.

    R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
this is my fave REM song, I like the melody and the idea behind it

This is where the Coolio train stops for me, voting Smells Like Teen Spirit as it's my last remaining nomination and also I just think it's a better song.

    Sorry Coolio :/

This one is much much harder, both brilliant songs but I think I'd prefer to listen to this one a little bit more

R.E.M. - Losing My Religion - both great songs, but Losing My Religion is superior, and again one of my noms.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit - an iconic anthem, one of my noms, and Gangsta's Paradise has no business being in the quarter finals.

    QF/Match 1
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the bridge

    Anthony and Flea are amazing
    QF/Match 2

Nirvana - Smells like Teen Spirit
They brought grunge to the mainstream and Dave Grohl is a god

    Match 1 - R.E.M. - Losing My Religion. Can't stand the RHCP.

Match 2 - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit. Not my favourite Nirvana song, but this would be a worthy overall winner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭lassykk

    Oh this is really hard

I'm basing this on which I'd prefer to listen to if they came on Spotify right now as I can't separate them any other way so I'm going with

Under the Bridge - I feel I like the appalling cover version of this by some girl band cloud my judgement of this classic in earlier rounds but listening to the original again it just gets the nod over REM

Smells Like Teen Spirit - I can't believe how close this is as I really like Gangstas Paradise

REM - Losing my religion - just prefer it to RHCP

Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit. It beats Coolio hands down.

    I really like this song

    QF/Match 2

    Coolio - Gangster's Paradise

I haven’t voted for this song yet (I don’t think) and I do like it. It’s knocked out some of my nominations so has to be worthy of a vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,894 ✭✭✭Triceratops Ballet

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge

one of my noms, I love this song, the intro and the choir classic stuff!!

    Coolio - Gangster's Paradise

I love teen spirit as much as the next person, but I actively listen to gangsters paradise regularly. It was on in the car on my way to work this morning like. Now that I'm no longer a grungy teen it has way more playability than smells like teen spirit! any other Nirvana track in this slot woudl probably have gotten my vote

    QF/Match 1
    R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
    Just a great pop song.

    QF/Match 2
    Coolio - Gangster's Paradise
Honestly not sure why I've chosen this one. The Nirvana one is iconic and a huge part of my younger days but I do think this is a great song and as the only track representing hip-hop left I think it's worth a vote to keep the genre alive in the comp.

    REM
Tougher than I thought - I love REM but not necessarily this song. I hate RHCP, except this song! REM just mean so much more to me though

    Nirvana
Let's not be silly now :p

All Saints! I lurrrrrved All Saints they were the cool girl band.

Couldn't think of their name and was too lazy to look it up!

I can't say I've ever liked a pop girl band or boy band with the exception of the odd Take That song

I'm being dragged to Westlife by my OH in Cork later in the year which will be an evening of torture ;)

Yeah it's a decent list tbf.

I'd prefer anything but Zombie to win I think though, as much as I like it I think best song of the 90s is a stretch (same with Rage tbf)

Mark Feehilys uncle has the funeral home, right? They rang into ocean fm saying they had 6 tickets as they couldn’t go and I heard and went down and picked em up. Long time ago that.

    Actually I apologise I tell a lie.

I saw them before they were Westlife as IOU, performing at half time of a Sligo Rovers game :pac:

Not sure if the Dubs had joined at that point or not though

Zombie - incredible song against fairly average Nirvana, especially as we have Teen Spirit

The other one is really close... but I'm going to go for Rage Against The Machine. Great song, really important message and the lead singer never went on to record Hollerback Girl

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,215 ✭✭✭khalessi

    QF/Match 3

Imho this should at least be semi final or final and a very hard decision as I love both these songs. Both gritty, both with great guitar, both huge anthems and epitomising the 90s but it has to be Nirvana

Nirvana - Come As You Are

    QF/Match 4

    No Doubt - Don't speak

Just love this song it has a great catchy tune and still holds its own on radio today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭lassykk

Cranberries - Definitely one of their best songs and as stated previously loved Dolores' voice. Also, not the best Nirvana song

Rage Against The Machine - Great song on a night out and whilst I'm not a big fan of the band I am a big fan of this song

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,603 ✭✭✭lassykk

The Cranberries - Zombie - both great songs. Zombie wouldn't be my favourite of The Cranberries, but its still great, and we've already got a Nirvana song in the semis.

Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name - both bands have much better songs, neither Don't Speak nor Killing In The Name would be absolute favourites of mine, but gotta give it to Rage here because I love the anti-establishment message of the song.

No frills, just the two better songs imo.

Been listening to Come As You Are again since it first was introduced in this tourney and it's a criminally under rated track.

No Doubt is just an iconic 90s song much more so than Rage.

very tough........love nirvana, but that cranberries song is class.
I'm going to go with Zombie:eek:

    QF/Match 4
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name Of

    my nomination

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,115 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

    3. Nirvana - whilst I don't think there should be 2 Nirvana songs left in at this stage, I really don't like Zombie
    4. RATM - such an uncompromising track, also it was Xmas no. 1 (not during the 90s admittedly). The No Doubt song does nothing for me.

    #3 Come As You Are
That bassline is delicious and it's quite a sweet song in its own twisted way. It's wrong if Teen Spirit gets further than this imo. Zombie is great but CAYA is the better song overall.

    #4 Don't Speak
Classic heartbreaker but with a catchy sing along chorus - a great mix of light and dark. RATM is good but overplayed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,382 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

Cranberries. Zombie is just way better than Come as you are

RATM - I like this song and I’m fairly indifferent to No doubt.
