One of the greatest human beings alive Sir David Attenborough has yet again sounded a trumpet of warning. Are we listening? Are we behind the science? are we willing to make the sacrifices that will be needed. The climate emergency won't wait for people who are still on the fence to make the right decision. Climate action is needed now. Let us demand that our leaders push forward with haste the implementation of mitigation measures in the fight to regain climate stability. The greatest challenge ever faced by humanity demands that is our duty to act and change our behaviour..

Maybe we can position the environment as a refugee issue to get the can kicking NIMBY's on side.

Mass environmental migration is only going to get worse. Unless you want to protest every time they want to put a few African's in Leitrim we really need to get **** in order.

Has he a new show out or is he selling a book?

Massive sudden change will never happen.

People don’t want it, government is afraid it will cost votes, lobbyists will continue to protect big industry and oil.

Can't we just use the Greta thread for people to tell us it's all a hoax and a socialist plot and tax isn't a solution etc...

You are one of the most educated and succinct posters on the topic in this forum. I have seen you destroy deniers with the science on more than one occasion. When it comes to raising awareness you are one of the top five. Right thinking people who recognise the need for sacrifice could seriously take a leaf out of your book, you set a good example. Just said I'd throw that out there as kinda an online high five..

I'm thinking of you. You are on point when it comes to sticking it to deniers on here. You consistently rebuke their pathetic arguments. And your sustainable lifestyle brother, you really practice what you preach.

I was wondering when the word "denier" was going to be introduced in this thread ............. and it didn't take long.
Ever time I hear a climate enthusiast use the words "climate denier", I have this mental image of the funny Monty Python sketch where they chase the "unbeliever" and try to kill him for having a different view. Other times though, when I hear the "denier" word being used as an accusation, the Spanish Inquisition comes to mind and I think about the tactics they used on "unbelievers" ........ such is the fervour of the climate devout.

You must be ancient if you remember Monty python. Step aside, make way for younger people who understand the science and realise the facts about the climate emergency.

Firstly 'Paddy'green, would not address anyone, not a single entity (outside of some paid retail environment setting, where it holds no real meaning) as a 'Sir', he is just another human being on the planet.

Secondly, maybe 'Dave' feels like he needs to up his game, having some young upstart from Sweden overtake him (and his decades of worthwhile work). So expect plenty of more PR from his agent.

Saying that, there is (as always) an environmental crisis, but rather than everyone banging on about it for their own attention, maybe folks can focus their attention on actual solutions, through investment and research.

e.g. Biofabrication may offer a solution to post-plastics, product design, packaging, furniture and even traditional construction.
    https://www.ted.com/talks/suzanne_lee_why_biofabrication_is_the_next_industrial_revolution?language=en

Currently the cement process uses 8% of total carbon emissions (1.2 trillion bricks per annum) each fired in kilns at 2,000F. Replacing this 800m tonnes of Co2 to make house bricks, would save more than emissions than all the world's planes and ships. Biocement is one of many solutions.

Also, Ireland could start to plant more trees, the government keeps missing it's own planting targets, yet declares a 'climate emergency' (only 2nd country to do so) regardless. Looks like a dodge of responsibility.

Very likely still below it's own targets.
Also the wrong type of trees (non-native coniferous trees).

A C&AG (Comptroller & Auditor General) report found that the government had missed targets for planting trees. While almost 22,500 hectares was afforested between 2015 and 2018, this represented a 'shortfall of 17%'.

While places like Scotland exceed their set targets, Ireland falls short.

Ireland’s level of afforestation has increased by only 1 percentage point in more than a decade, despite the fact that the country has one of the lowest levels of forest in the EU. A recent report found that only 11 per cent of the country was covered by forest — compared with an average of 38 per cent in the rest of the EU.

Anyone can set future '2040 targets', but these targets are meaningless if they're often not met.

Oh, the irony. From the poster who uses David Attenborough as the God-like figure in the climate fight.
"David, you should step aside, as the younger people are the only ones to understand science ....... you know, 'science', which came on the scene about 10 years ago (apparently)".

Yes we have. Check out some of the XR videos on YouTube concerning climate justice.

Sir David has always listened to the science. I am talking about the luddites that are still stuck in the 1970s with their world views.

A good deal of the over-anxious climate change supporters are focusing on the wrong message.
The world needs to focus on sustainability and pollution.
Stop polluting the world's rivers, lakes, and oceans. And stop polluting our air with noxious fumes of coal-burning and other similar materials.

Sustainability can be achieved in power generation by using natural resources in an efficient manner; and not used as a mechanism to make profit. The nuclear option should be re-considered. There can also be sustainability efforts in general industry, farming, recycling, and most facets of our lives. And stop over-fishing of the world's oceans.

It would be easier to focus on sustainability and pollution than jump up and down screaming that the sky is falling with climate change. You would get better buy-in from the world as a whole.

Hands up & sorry Sir David, but like the late great David Bellamy & many others, I too am a climate change denier...

    There, I've said it.

I'm more concerned about our level of consumption. We are trashing the planet at an alarming rate and sleep walking into a ecological disaster.

I have made an artificial bog in my back garden. Basically I dug a ten by ten foot hole, lined it with plastic and filled it with water. I buy nets of firewood a petrol station nearby and deposit the contents in the water. Basically it is a form of carbon sequestration. The wood soaks with water and sinks eventually. I have about ten nets of firewood deposited so far.

    He is only a narrator.
He reads out a script provided to him.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Planet Earth series.
He had done a fabulous job and had a fantastic career, life and is well respected.

But don't mistake the messenger for the message.
There's loads of BBC researchers who aggregated serious scientists work.
