Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

**Diarrhea may be a secondary path of transmission for the novel coronavirus, scientists said Friday following the publication of the latest study reporting patients with abdominal symptoms and loose stool.**

The possibility is not totally surprising to scientists, given that the new virus belongs to the same family as SARS.

Fecal transmission of SARS was implicated in sickening hundreds in Hong Kong’s Amoy Gardens housing estate in 2003. A rising plume of warm air originating in bathrooms contaminated several apartments and was transported by wind to adjacent buildings in the complex.

The business event at the Grand Hyatt Singapore that has been linked to at least five coronavirus cases in three countries was hosted by a global gas analysis company with offices in Europe and Asia.

The conference, held over three days from Jan 20, was organised by British firm Servomex, Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported.

Singapore's Ministry of Health had previously said that 109 company employees - 94 from overseas and 15 local - attended the conference.

Britain facing 'major outbreak' of the Wuhan Coronavirus according to tomorrow's Sunday Times.

Greater threat than ebola could overwhelm NHS

Britain could suffer a “major outbreak” of the coronavirus, which is likely to become a pandemic, according to the microbiologist who co-discovered ebola and the presence of Aids in Africa.

Professor Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said he was “increasingly alarmed” by the rapid spread of the virus and the “huge” number of cases emerging daily.

    Baodi district announcement:
    - 1 person per household can leave every other day to buy basic needs
    - Public gatherings banned
    - No one can leave between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., unless there are special circumstances
    - No one from Baodi is allowed to go to Beijing without permission

Of course. They obviously don't want Beijing suffering a similar fate to Wuhan.

The fact this is right on the edge of Beijing i'd imagine we will see ever increasing draconian measures put in place here and in other surrounding districts. Last stand type stuff to stop Beijing being crippled.

Not only vital for China but for the global economy.

I presume Beijing and hong kong, shanghai etc have all been preparing for this - they have had 3 weeks at least to get things in place.

I havnt heard what they are doing however. Have they been building hospitals similar to wuhan, stockpiling and producing PPE - wuhan is one thing - but if this goes off in one of those cities.........

I'm guessing the priority is protect the coastal cities and the capital at literally all cost. It must be.

It would be an economic, humanitarian and political catastrophe if those cities face the same draconian measures Wuhan is enduring.

    That's the question.

This is interesting, it's about flu transmission in tropical places, air travel spreading it. It's about Australia mostly, when flu increases in Sydney and Melbourne it increases in Darwin despite the tropical weather. Places like Singapore have double spikes annually. It's got an equatorial climate and rains all year really but (without looking at the date) equatorial places have the ITCZ (Inter tropical convergence zone) cross twice a year bringing higher rainfall when it does. Tropical places get higher flu rates during the rainy season.

This is believed to be because humidity affects droplet sizes and thus transmission. This info is directly transferable to coronavirus.

Recent article on CNN states air purifiers are useful to mitigate the spread of the virus in hospitals [edit: actually it refers to personal air purifying devices]. I've read that high-rated HEPA filters can remove viruses from the air - presumably by filtering the particles and droplets the virus might be on moreso than the virus itself.

I have two, the dyson heater and the Philips one with the smart controls. They are both in a similar price range but the philips one is a lot better. There are much cheaper ones available too that should be better than the Dyson and not far off the phillips.

The CADR rating measures how much it can filter in a given period. The hepa rating measures how fine particles it can filter.

Not sure how useful they might be in a domestic setting for this specific situation. It seems like if the virus is in your home you probably will contract it anyway. But it might be good to put them in shared spaces like offices or restaurants, and especially in waiting rooms for doctors.

So there is an info dump about air purifiers.

Four suspected cases of coronavirus at UHL tested negative
    Sunday, February 9th, 2020 9:30am

“It's been confirmed that the four suspected cases of coronovirus at University Hosptial Limerick have all tested negative.
The test results were confirmed last night.

However it's understood that there are now a further two suspected cases of the virus at the hospital after two individuals were referred to the hospital with symptoms and fitting the necessary criteria to be tested.
They have been isolated and the results of their tests should be known later today.

that's the right way of dealing with it, give out information on the internet about the whereabouts from all infected for everybody to check whether having been in the vicinity with somebody of them.

wouldn't expect any less effectivity from the singapore authorities..:)

I dunno but apparently you can get tests for flu that give results in 10-15 minutes. While someone could have both diseases at once, waiting until they actually identify the disease someone has as well as testing negative for coronavirus might be a good idea. Best to work on the assumption that the reports of false negatives are genuine until confirmed otherwise.

The University of Limerick announced last week it had suspended travel to and from China amid coronavirus fears

Apparently the University there has suspended all ‘university-related’ travel by all staff and students to and from China, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Another 41 people on a cruise ship off the coast of Japan have tested positive for the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases on board to 61.

Some 3,700 people are on board the Diamond Princess, which is quarantined in Yokohama for at least two weeks.

The checks began after an 80-year-old Hong Kong man who had been on the ship last month fell ill with the virus.

Afaik - mathematical modelling of the spread of infectious disease requires a critical number of infected people before rates of infection start to rise. Additionally spread of the disease outside Asia has been of a potentially shorter timeframe - with first case in Wuhan was early to mid December as far as I'm aware.

Regarding death and recovery rates - one issue seems to be with the first detected cases getting full medical intervention and resources until resources and staff reach a point where full care cannot be guaranteed. Much as has apparently happened in Wuhan etc where medical resources have been overrun.

Yes but also takes a long time as Gozunda pointed out. There were only a few dozen confirmed cases in Wuhan for weeks in December and early january, 2/3 of the total cases were confirmed in just the last week alone. Though it is thought that the feast of 100,000 families in Wuhan is what kickstarted such exponential growth

One of the Brits in Mallorca has tested positive (the father), the case is related to the guy that came back from Singapore and went to the French Ski Resort, so far he’s passed the virus to 7 people, five are still in France, one went back to England and this one that lives in Mallorca. (All friends).

    News from The Mallorca Bulletin

Son Espases Hospital confirmed on Sunday morning that a man suspected of having coronavirus does indeed have it. His wife and two daughters have proved negative.

The results of tests at the National Microbiology Centre in Madrid were received by the hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The four members of the British family are in an isolation unit at Son Espases.

Fernando Simón, the director of the centre for the coordination of health alerts and emergencies, explained in Madrid on Sunday morning that the patient was infected at a ski resort in France, adding that although he has tested positive, he is otherwise in decent health. The case is described as mild. Efforts are being made to identify all contacts he may have had and to give these people "adequate monitoring".

I saw a reddit thread that showed a heat map of Chinese cities and Wuhan was producing very significantly more Co2 emissions than all other cities. It was theorised that it was because of burning so many bodies. But I think it sounds pretty far fetched. Does anyone have any other theories?

Lots of extra folks at home all the time burning extra fossil fuels, trying to stay warm.

Its actually an increase in sulphur dioxide, not C02, which is due to organic matter being burned, if those readings are correct.
