Yeah I remember the last election Yates seemed to have a great feel for what was going on the ground. Also is able to give insight to the listener about the reality of statements and behind the scenes stuff.

Whether people like Yeats or not he's the best for predictions come elections. His analysis in 2016 was the most accurate in fairness. His 'calling it' podcasts are worth a listen if people are interested for their constituencies...

Michael Martin should be in education. His facility at 'revision' is unparalleled! :D
He's on So'R at the moment.

    Dad joke.

I watched the prime time debate lastnight and ill be honest out of the lot of them the Independent lady ( don't know her name) was strongest amongst them and seem to know her facts.

Saorise was definitely the worst of them all and it was cringe worthy television. I am surprised it hasn't been picked up more by the media.

The FG and FF candidates seemed a bit off, the FG candidate seemed to be droning on with rapid statistics but didn't get a sense that he actually emphasised with what people were saying and why they were angry. The FF candidate tried to avoid a question or two before he was pulled back. Then they both tried to have an argument.

Decent debate and was well moderated.

Marion Harkin was the independent. She's running in Sligo/Leitrim. FG wanted her to run for them but she is staying independent.

Has anyone seen a video of Leo answering 'questions' going around? Jesus.
What is that supposed to achieve??
My mother jsut sent it to me on Whatsapp...
Guaranteed to be bad if she is ripping the P*ss out of it.
I don't even understand the thinking behind it if it's real.

Ironically, Catherine Murphy was probably more communicative in five minutes with Brian Dobson, than Shortall was for the two hours on Monday.

She was very good. But immediately you might realise why, when Dobson goes after RBB like a rottweiler.
Catherine got a very easy interview.

    I did.

I give up commenting on him, he seems to not want to go back. Bored maybe?

It's odd. He is sitting on something and he has a whiteboard with questions

(In fact everything is white bar his clothes), and there is some weird music playing. Just stupid questions "where are you from", "what do you do"
It has to be real, but is it supposed to help him in the election?
I will try and upload it to streamable.

Edited - I found it with a quick search
    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/leo-varadkar-answers-the-most-googled-questions-about-him-1.4155092

I didn't realise it was the most searched questions about him. Still odd.

Those kind of videos are very common with celebrities and politicians. They were just the most googled search items of him. Not sure what the big deal is?

    Another debate on tonight (Primetime)

Who’s on tonight? Is it all the left wing parties?

    The country is fine.

    Stop with the hyperbole.

Nowhere is some magical land of bliss and every country has problems, most worst than Ireland.

This is exactly the attitude that means we will never reach our full potential.

We know the country is not a **** heap jesus christ we are in a better position than 98% of the human race by being born here.

But my god the country is not fine ffs. Health, infrastructure, housing supply falling apart at the seams. Gross fiscal mismanagement over the years means the chickens are coming home to roost.

Whatever happened to aspiring to be the best we can be instead of just accepting mediocrity.

Correct, we're 100 years behind where we could be.

Indeed the country works really well when your able bodied and don't require help but falls down greatly when it does.

Yep i agree. Personally I'm in a good position but I have seen too many people close to me fall through various cracks. The problems are not lost on me and I really emphatise.

Also I see things that frustrate me on a daily basis. Today's example being a young lad becoming frighteningly unwell on an overcrowded train. Commuter rail infrastructure has not increased in proportion with population increase. Failings of the state.

Can you point to any country in the world which is 100 years ahead of us?

Oh yes, because Northern Ireland scores higher than the republic on every metric. Not.

Pat Kenny mentioned this on NT radio.Boris did the same craic in the UK.first..Someone in FG thought it was a good idea for Leo to copy.On NT they played back to back clips of both leaders. It was gas.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I saw something in one of the online papers late last night, and they were mentioning how ridiculous it is.

When I received it, it had no text, just him sitting there with music answering irrelevant questions.

It is poor. I haven't seen the Boris one.

Straight out of the Tory handbook.

Christ, that makes Leo's look even worse. And he left the sh*tty music in.
"Where does Leo live", "Is he married".

Since he was told to stop the wasting the millions on the spin/marketing company, is he employing a cheap one, or is he having a go at it himself?
Either way, that lad doesn't seem to have a clue how to get the publics backing.

As Boris' version was clearly a set up to tell the electorate everything is grand Brexit will cause no problem what so ever.

Leo's one was an effort at trying to humanise him and make him seem less 'autistic'

He seemed to be doing OK until he started going on about the steak....

Personally the best two google most answered questions were Jurgen Klopp and Paul McCartney.

In all likelihood Leo will probably still get elected - diversity Indian background, LGBT vote, middle Ireland vote. The fella has it all.
On top of that he does seem a more likable person than his closest 'competitors' MM and Mary Lou. And that says more about them than it does Leo.
There are few politicians around to match the populism 'man on the street' nature of Bertie in his pomp these days. Unless you include the independents like Michael Healy Rae.

The main parties leaders all have very little charisma. Micheal Martin looked like a shoe in for Taoiseach at one stage back when he was fresh faced and had a decent head of hair. Now he just seems like an old hurler on the ditch. I suppose he seems to me like the Junior hurler who has stayed playing too long, and he looks like his best chance of playing senior hurling are long gone.

Mary Lou suffers from a myriad of issues a southerner leading SF etc, plus she has the problem the Joan Burton used to suffer from that shrill voice when she raises the voice. Not very stateswoman like.

Howlin for labour I don't know what he does with Labour, what do they represent? Does he know what they represent? He has that look of Micheal J. Fox these days. I bet he wishes he could go back to the late 1990's before the rise of the independents and the disgruntled lefties?
I suppose they can't do worse than the last election?
So the only way is up?

PBP with RBB the strange mix of a plummy voiced Dub educated in a prestigious private Dublin school leading a protest Trotskyist movement.
    Playing at being anti-establishment.
Personally I cannot take the fella seriously it is like he is 'acting' a part. It all seems like 'student union' politics to me. Fighting with SF for the unemployed vote.

The Social Democrats I don't really know what they do centre leftish. They seem earnest. But will the party be around in a few years?
Probably will prop up a party in government and go the way of the PD's.

The Greens all seem earnest but have an urban wishy-washy middle class core about them. I would only pick them if I was really stuck for someone to give a preference to. They will mean high taxes that is for sure. Maybe they will finally get this large youth movement voting all the same?

After all the debates so far and all the FG gaffes I still feel that FG are going to be the likely in the hotseat again. Unless FF break with decades of history MM to do a u-turn and goes into bed with Mary Lou. I suppose it is alright sure FF and SF are probably like distant cousins at this stage?

FG still seem to be getting all the publicity even if it is bad Leo's drug answer, Noone's autistic comment, Leo's google answers.
Has anything else really stood out so far from any other party?
    Good or bad?
It has all being a bit bland. Broken promises blah, blah, blah.
Just like Irish politics always will be safe and centrist. With the odd madser from the left or right making a bit of noise.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

At least Boris' version was informative if Biased.
Leo's version is tripe. I haven't ever seen these type of videos, but if Politicians are going to do them, they should at least make them about something other than themselves. They're not exactly known for being the most interesting bunch.
I also thought Leo's version, if anything, made him seem more 'autistic'.

I would like to point out, the reasons you reckon he will get elected are also the same reasons that many would refuse to vote for him. It's 6 of one...
As for likeability, I don't think Leo has it. He doesn't come across as likeable to me, but then, as you mentioned, either do the others really. Half a dozen of the other..

As you also mentioned, the more likeable seem to be the ones that aren't likely to get any real authority. Independents or small parties.

Agreed that is what I thought after the steak bit. I think Leo's best tactic is to take a page from Enda's playbook. Say as little as possible and let the others talk themselves into trouble. The stuff with Leo kind of reminds me of William Hague and the baseball cap effort.
