Not the first time that idea has been mentioned. Would be great to have but I would wonder how financially viable it would be.

City centre to Blackrock Castle is limited to 6 knots. That's 23 minutes alone.

About time the river was used as an asset instead of an inconvenience, or sewer.

Oh really? Wow.. Maybe there can be an exception for something like a commuter ferry

Speed limit is to protect the Marina walls against wake damage and also because there are three river rowing clubs, a coastal rowing club, a currach club and a small sailing club along that section.

Other commercial traffic doesn't get a derogation for that section - can't see a ferry getting one.

I'm sure you're right on this.

The proposed boat is designed to be environmentally friendly -with a specially designed hull - might help.

23 mins? Could you do the same route faster by other means? Bus...? Doubt it..?

There is a lot to be said of consistency too as well as speed, not sure anyone driving with traffic in can be as certain with traffic of arrival time as this would presumably be.

Also re the speed I see the following noted in the Echo article. Surely there should be a 'wake-limit' rather than speed limit, if you can create the same wake with a different design going twice as fast then why not.

“The Enviro-Cat 35s were developed in Australia for operation in environmentally sensitive areas. They are slim, of double-hull designed, with water jet propulsion to give a smooth ride, with very low wake or disturbance to the river and harbour bed,” Mr Coffery said.

The new ferries will each have capacity for 350 passengers and Mr Coffey said the commuter service will help reduce the number of cars on Cork roads on a daily basis.

He said the ferries have a top speed of 25 knots and would be able to bring commuters from Crosshaven and Aghada into the city centre within 45 minutes. Cobh would be just 25 minutes away.
