Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Has There Been Anything Like The BBC Radio 1 Roadshow In Ireland?

From 1973 to 1999 in the UK BBC Radio 1 did a roadshow throughout every July and August where they toured various towns (mainly seaside resorts) across the country. I'm wondering if there has been something like this in Ireland with stations like RTĒ 2FM. Top chart artists also performed live. Here's a link for reference.

The beats on the streets attracted huge crowds of 2FM listeners from all social background.
The beats on the streets ran from 1986 to around 1999, on either Saturday or Sunday nights on around 6/7 occasions during each summer in large towns and cities. It was also broadcast live on 2FM.

2FM was the biggest radio station in Ireland at the time.
It was the only form of entertainment for many young people in Ireland.

Anyone remember the 'Lark in the park' in the early 80's?.
Free concerts were held in local Dublin public parks, all featuring Irish music talent of the time.

There was Radio 2 involvement, but I can't remember if it was a fully RTE associated event - might have been promoted by the various local area councils.
They were fun events, all the same.

Update : Following a bit of google research, 'The Larks' were promoted by RTE Radio 2 and In Dublin magazine.
This TV news report is from 1987 - The Lark at St Annes Park, Raheny.

I remember going to that. “Electric” Eddie giving it socks.

Last I heard he was with Nova, is that still the case?

I was at a Lark in the Park in Blackrock Park in the 1980s. The Fountainhead performed at it. I was impressed with how the two lads produced that synthesised sound without any additional musicians: just guitars, synthesisers, backing tracks, one vocalist and possibly a drum machine. This was the mid 1980s, not the late '90s after all!

I was born in the 80's so have some fond memories of how massive 2fm was back then, but like any free event in Ireland the beat on the street did sometimes have a fairly rough crowd.

Anyhow... Anyone remember The Fanta Roadshow with Andy Ruane? Does that count?

Yes I remember them, they were't just in Dublin though. The Radio 2 Last Lark of Summer in Salthill in 1986 sticks out in my memory. It was hosted by the legendary BP Fallon who presented the BP Fallon Orchestra on Radio 2 on Saturday evenings at the time. Huge crowds turned out in expectation of a 'surprise' performance by the Waterboys - and we weren't disappointed. Some video footage of Waterboys/Sawdoctors performing at the event here:

To clarify above I dont think anyone would class the 2FM Roadcaster as anything like BBC R1 roadshows.
The Roadcaster is a commercial revenue generator for 2FM and broadcasts a presenter led live programme on location, to promote an RTE TV or radio competition/ promotion or a businesses' new opening or sales event, so its not a party or a "loud event". Not used as much now as it was in the 80s, 90s or 00s. Though still is available for use.
I think Atlantlic 252 (based in Co. Meath) used to do outdoor party events similar to BBC R1 in the UK during the summers and in some parts of Ireland, in the 90s. If these were broadcast live, I'm not too sure....?

Some of the bigger Dublin radio stations such as FM104 also did live music/disco summer outdoor listener events.

I remember also in early 00s RTE and 2FM held the "02 in the park" (Pheonix park) events, usually with boybands and popbands, televised on TV and broadcast on radio. A more organised thing and I think these were meant to replace the 2FM Beat on the streets...lasted a few years.

Does anyone remember 2fm's "02 in the Park" in the early 00s? this was a free concert in the phoenix park promoted by 2fm and sponsored by 02, I don't think the 2fm DJs had much of a big roll compared to the beat on the Street, It only lasted 2 years IIRC

I went to it once (girlfriend's friend's boyfriend was in a band that was 'performing'). All the acts were forced to mime, until Westlife, the headline act, came on. They were promoting some Rat Pack/Frank Sinatra album. They were awful. We were already leaving when everyone started following. Seems like the Westlife fanbase weren't fans of that type of music (and their performance didn't sound great).

Radio 1 Roadshow Bits and Pieces.

I used to get 9 or 10 every day. Remember being disappointed if I got 7 or 8.
