The statistics are a little misleading. SIMI are classifying mild-hybrid vehicles as regular hybrids. So diesel cars with a mild hybrid setup become 'diesel electric' vehicles. 61 of those 62 are Kia Sportage mild hybrids. The other is a Tucson mild hybrid.

Same with 'petrol electric', most of the growth are real hybrid cars but I see some mild hybrids there too. 70 Ford Puma's, I'm not sure if the 12 Skoda Superb's are mild hybrids or just mislabelled plug-in's (which can happen).

This is only going to get worse as more mild-hybrids become available throughout the year (Ford Fiesta, Focus and Kuga, VW Golf, a fair few Audis). The UK stats have them as a separate category.

Yeah, it's a pity they don't split it out, though mild hybrid or classic hybrid, they just don't cut it these days. I wouldn't think those buying classic hybrids in 2020 are doing so as a means to getting more electric cars on the road. IMO, they're buying them because 1) it's how the car they want is spec'd so they've no say in the matter, 2) cheaper running costs vs a similar petrol only car.

    2020 2019

    Petrol Electric 4,241 2,206 +92.25%

    Electric 898 799 +12.39%

    Plug-In Hybrid 561 301 +86.38%

    Diesel/Electric 62 0

Who is making the diesel hybrids?

    Diesel 15,968 13,120 -17.84%
    Petrol 13,096 12,281 -6.22%

Had a look at combining both Petrol + Petrol Electric (box ticking exercise IMO), since most cars are adding some sort of battery to their drivetrain, while not exactly give much/any usable electric range. Mild hybrids as mentioned for example. Sales are only up 7.96% on 2019.

Seems plug ins and full electrics have had decent growth compared to other fuel types/setups.

Anybody know what's up with the zoe sales. Have deliveries of the new model started or are people waiting for these?

My dealer can't do a deal for a ZE50 with me because he claims that he is waiting on discount codes and possible delivery dates from Renault. I have called many times since the first of January.

    UK sales for comparison.

Yes but the important point is that their sales tripled from January 2019, while ours only grew 12%, what accounts for that?

UK BEV sales having a massive increase compared to jan last year though. 3 times as many this Jan, compared to relatively the same uptake here in Ireland.

@PaulRyan97, Where did you get that screengrab?

The jump happened in the middle of 2019, rather than specifically this month.

Looks like it coincided with Tesla Model 3 availability, with that car making up the fast majority of BEV sales since then.

Any information on whether this months sales are following the same trends as January's, with just a marginal increase?

401 EV sales in Feb 2020
325 EV sales in Feb 2019

Leaf in first place again, with Kona, M3 and Ioniq following. Kia still haven't got their act together, selling just 94 Souls and 84 eNiros.

The Model 3 is propping up those numbers big time (203 sold this Feb vs 0 last year as it wasn't available). Leaf down ~10%, and Kona down ~40% from this time last year.

Kona down ~40% from this time last year.

As expected. A year ago, Kona was the only long range EV this side of a near €100k Tesla Model S

Now there are eSoul, eNiro, Tesla Model 3, all better value for money than Kona EV. Dare I say even the L62 is better value if you can get it at bottom dollar price that some people got

Only 3 Konas left in the country (allegedly) when I bought in January.

There's always a short supply according to dealers. Every Hyundai dealer told me their ioniq was the last in the country when I was buying last year.

Looks like Hyundai (and others) have been successfully milking it. Nothing wrong with that, businesses ought to maximise profits. Just wish we had more choice and there was more competition...

That was my first reaction but there was a legitimate shortage in the UK last year. This was in contrast to Nissan who were telling me there were plenty of Leafs to go around.

Tough month given the circumstances, just 50 EVs sold in April. A nice 14% of the cars sold in April though.

  • Moderators Posts: 12,390 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Kia having their moment in the sun. Why they didn't try sell the eNiro when it came out first I don't know.

Ioniq performing at it should do, poorly. Leaf sales way down too as similar sized cars come online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭RedorDead

That's mad seeing any EV sell more than any ICE car for any month lol.

I would say the id.3 accounts for all dealer cars though probably not all sold yet ?

Still mad to think the id.3 is higher in one month than the model 3 for the whole year!

Thats just September sales! Model 3 on 638 YTD.

Yikes, not looking too good for the Kona, I wonder what's going on there?
I'm guessing that includes the Kona Hybrid, I wonder are people holding out for a PHEV or something

The Leaf is way down too, probably because there's a lot more competition in the market now

What happened to Kona is No 4 on the list. Choosing between them is a no brainer.

Fair point, never really understood the attraction of the Kona against the E-Niro, other than the fact that you almost can't get an E-Niro

That can't be all the car sales in Ireland in 2020.

I mean, did Citroen or Dacia not sell anything?
I wouldn't blame anyone for not buying them, but they must have sold a few cars right?

Competition is a great thing.. Not helped by the OTR price of €42500 for the slightly updated model as I saw in Waterford recently..

How the mighty have fallen. Nissan Leaf was always #1. 5th place for August it seems.

Could easily be 4th most popular EV manufacturer by the end of the year. Kia are right behind them. VW could surpass them too if ID3 sales are still ramping up.

Tis what happens when a big launch car gets delivered in 1 big bang. Tesla M3 could of been similar, but deliveries on those spread over months.

I don't see Ford in that list. I'm pretty sure the list is full EVs only going by the models listed. Though I have no idea what a nissan Evalia is.

Tesla Model 3 got the lead as the most sold EV for the year so far, equating the total number EVs sold in 2017. Also overtook BMW 5 series by 19 units
Interesting Kona recovered in September selling 57 units vs 20 in Sept 2019. I wonder if the end of BIK is pushing this.

Spotted a 202 Porsche Taycan on the prom in Galway this lunchtime (one of the 3 sold in September I guess?), first time I've seen one on the road.

Between it and the ID.3's and Teslas, you really are starting to see more EVs out and about.

With such low volumes, dealers pre registering demos could be a large percentage of sales.
I think when I looked previously, there were 40 odd registrations of the new Leaf 62 in a certain month, while there were almost the same number of Nissan dealers.

Either way, it looks like Eamon is implementing his green agenda & this is clear to see in the uptick in EV sales & the rapid improvement in the charging infrastructure.

Glad I voted green now :P.

    :D.
