Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I rang today to postpone my Ballina lift inspection. no problem getting it changed to 2 weeks later. Just waiting 6 mins on the phone and there's any amount of slots there the week before and after Easter.

Looks like I needn't have bothered now as I'm sure they'll shut altogether after tonight's announcement.

Does "lock down" mean nct centres closed?

    It should do.

I didn't see NCT listed as one of the valid reasons for travel beyond 2km...

Would seem sensible to put a freeze on it for 6 months like uk maybe.

A black hole could open up in Offaly and the NCT centres would stay open.

I'm booked in for retest tomorrow at 1pm and it will definitely pass as it failed on a very minor issue that was fixed. Disappointing announcement tonight. Will have to ring in the morning and see if they're closed

Cant see them open when we are told to stay at home as many cars wont be on the road.

You were going to push the car 2km as a brief excercise???

Because obviously you can travel to the shop outside the 2km zone ;)

I would hope testing becomes suspended now. I have a booking for next week for the lift inspection, and was worrying about having someone in my car who could be cross-contaminating from multiple vehicles over the course of a day.

No reason why they can't simply extend existing NCT's for 6 months as per the UK/NI, apart from issuing new discs to everyone.

    https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/625292-updated-list-of-essential-retail-outlets-27th-march-2020/#businesses-that-can-only-offer-emergency-call-out-or-delivery-services

Not open I'd say reading that list of essential services.

    Essential retail outlets
    1. Retail and wholesale sale of food, beverages and newspapers in non-specialised and specialised stores

    2. Retail sale of household consumer products necessary to maintain the safety and sanitation of residences and businesses

    3. Pharmacies/Chemists and retailers providing pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical or dispensing services

    4. Retail sale of selling medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores

    5. Fuel stations and heating fuel providers

    6. Retail sale of essential items for the health and welfare of animals, including animal feed and medicines, animal food, pet food and animal supplies including bedding

    7. Laundries and Drycleaners

    8. Banks, Post Offices and Credit Unions

    9. Retail sale of safety supply stores (work clothes, Personal Protective Equipment, for example)

NCT's closed tomorrow. Discussions tomorrow, can't see it being opened in the next 2 weeks.

I am just curious if anyone knows of a person who was prosecuted for not not having valid NCT since this started a few months ago.
I am assuming that the old cert expired since this problem arose. I cannot see a penalty/points could be issued for something that is not available.
The incomplete test is a JOKE.

They should have paused them until they had the lifts back. Even before the virus.

There are new lifts becoming available every week. Naas, Blarney and Monaghan got them this week. Takes 2 days to remove and fit a new lift. Maha have only one crew fitting them and they are able to fit them as fast as they are available.

Do you think they should close all centres until they are all fitted (2 days x 50ish centres x 2-3 lifts each)??

If they closed centres that have no lifts you would be complaining about the inconvenience for people having to travel to another county for an inspection.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Yes because then the vast majority would only have had to go once.

Not pausing it means the vast majority have to go at least twice, many three times.

Ignoring the virus. This means increasing the workload and administration by 50% or more. Everyone having to take time off work 2 or 3 times.

Ncts suspended today sat 28 mar. Being reviewed today to see if they will suspend for longer. Source nct website

I think from what i have being reading in the last few days with the Covid thing and the problem with the centres people are not turning up for tests.
I suppose in the overall scheme of where we are at now it's pretty well irrelevant.

There are likely to be more garda checkpoints than normal for a while, whether or not gardai will be getting hung up on expired nct certs I dont really know.

Bigger issue might be how insurance companies react.

I did hear of one person being asked about not having valid NCT cert but the previous one had expired before the problem arose.
I be very surprised if the Gardai can issue penalty points for this.
The offence as is written is
    Driving without current NCT cert.
I think there need to be new law passed for the partial test be recognoised as "current cert" I'd say this may run for a while.

That would be the sensible thing to do.
But common sense doesn't exist at the RSA at the moment regarding NCT testing and the worldwide deadly pandemic.

Car is booked for nct today
Current disc runs out end of this month
Will I be charged for not showing up even though there was an announcement that they are closed
Tried ringing them but just getting a message that they are closed

No information about if you will be charged for not showing up

Hard to take this lockdown seriously if they deem doing an nct was being essential, what a load of b....x

We'd close the hospitals before we'd close NCT centres.

Begs the question, why close today instead of staying open while reevaluating. I was booked in for 1pm today. Instead of having a brand new NCT by now I have to wait. And I have to drive the car with an expired NCT to and from work. Shambles.

Hmm. Cause a bit of hassle if the mechanics required to fix fail defects aren't also deemed to be essential services...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭flashinthepan

Not a word about people who had booked for today

You just know they will charge ( as its automatic) €22 for a no show
And you will have to jump through all kinds of flaming hoops to get your money back

No reply to phone calls or email

    Joke

    They are.

    On call.

The list was available yesterday, dunno why people keep saying today.

"On call" implies roadside emergency, not "the NCT failed me on x, y z, can I drop it in to you before the retest deadline?"

And that's just one of the issues.
If the NCT finds something wrong, you have to scramble around town looking for a mechanic during a lock down. That is where the private owners of the NCT service catches you for fees i.e. if you cannot get it fixed on time for the re-test.

As I mentioned elsewhere; How come the Brits shut down their MOT centres for 6 months? Did they get it wrong then?
It is a complete shambles and a big mistake by the government.

If people have any sense they will just stop booking until this mess is sorted.
Having a medical procedure is an essential service but we get fix or die, i never heard of "incomplete""
A service that is "not fit for purpose" is just that.
When they have the things fixed people book and get tested, the same as in UK. An Irish solution YES.

THERE TWO SEPARATE THREADS ON THIS TOPIC...

I wonder do they have teams traveling the country now to fix the lifts in the centres that don't have working ones.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, has said National Car Testing Service (NCT), as well as the Commercial Vehicle Testing System are suspended until further notice.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

It's 5 working days so I think if you cancel it now they might charge you. If they cancel it, no charge, so I'd leave it.

So what does that mean, can you drive a car that's cert is up this week for example? They have stopped the tests but are the guards going to issue points ?

I wonder why the change of heart?

First of all business as usual, then closed today (Saturday), updated to open as usual tomorrow, now SR says closed.

Were the NCT centres themselves pushing to stay open?

I suspect there be legal reasons why the test cannot be re-introduced, the whole legality of having an incomplete test and re-introduction of same?
Its kinda per school stuff. Also if tests suspended unlikely new test can be backdated.
I thought he was writing a book, a few more pages. Is he still a TD/Minister i thought he lost.

AFT. Really was an easy early call.
Not a TD but still a Minister. All the anomolies should have been included in the emergency legislation that was passed during the last few days.
