Typical EU double standards. You cannot have your national flag but can walk around in " bollocks to brexit " t shirts.

    https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/the-lib-dems-turn-up-to-european-parliament-with-bollocks-to-brexit-t-shirts-1-6137054

No double standard, one is against the rules, the other isn't.

Can I have an example of other EU double standards - the typical ones you refer?

Is there another video I should watch?

Or do you mean “We don’t hate Europe, we just hate the European Union”
    Is that hate speech?
I didn't say it was hate speech....maybe read my post?
I said she pulled him up on the use of the word hate....because he said he hated the EU and his speech came right after a speech from a Holocaust survivor as others have pointed out.

To be fair to you brickster, I'm kinda glad that ALL the British politicians are leaving the EU Parliament. The UK has treated EU elections as a joke for years, with the result that the quality of MEP they produce has been consistently low.

That said, as Tacitus points out above, the Brexit party were perfectly entitled to dress themselves in Union Flag t-shirts if they wanted, and if the Lib Dems tried to bring in a banner with a slogan on it or a national flag, they would have been censured too. So its something of a false equivalence to say it is a double standard.

Hope the lads from the UK are able to follow rules better when they are trying to negotiate a trade deal with the EU

    Mairead was over dramatic.

Britain is our closest neighbour and she would be wise to remember that.

Let the Brits be nutters all they want, but we need to deal with them.

There were plenty of other 'Brits' there prepared to be respectful of the rules.

Farage was just being his usual rabble rousing thuggish self.

Farages grand gesture was the dramatic one, the response was simply following the rules of parliament, as any good leader of the house should do. Hardly registered on the Bercow Scale of flourish TBH.

And the Brexit Party hold no power in the UK government, so TBH I doubt anyone in Whitehall or Leinster House are worried about McGuiness following the regulations.

I'd probably defer to the idea that McGuiness shouldn't have reacted at all but again, the rules say no flags.

Farage and his crew were engaging in the sort of nationalistic jingoism that has no place in the parliament. McGuinness put them in their place. She’s a fine MEP, and not there just to collect the expenses.

And we will. No harm putting them in their place occasionally

    x2^^

Herself and Simon Coveney have shown themselves to be top class representatives for Ireland throughout the Brexit saga, despite the lack of grá for Fine Gael in the country - I really hope these two are remembered for their excellent service, statespersonship and decorum throughout.

It's great to see that Mairead & Simon are what the world sees of us VS Farage & Widdecombe representing our closest neighbour.

Yeah let's not do anything that would displease Brits.... What a subservient attitude!

Anyway Nidge is clown and very muted reporting in serious newspapers (The Times and Guardian) indicates those in power or wanting to be in power decided he was useful fool for Brexit but now he is diplomatic embarrassment. And those who will applaud his antics have no power and will be lucky to have have half decent jobs in future.

Doesn't matter anymore, they are gone, along with other MEPs who did not want to go. That is the sad bit.

Don't know why the Brexit Party contested the EU elections anyway, always struck me as odd, but maybe it was just be jingoistic and odious on their last day in office. I hope it was worth it for them.

MMG played a blinder IMV, and I bet the rest of the Parliament couldn't wait to see the back of them!

Be interesting to see if the so called Brexit Night party is well supported tomorrow. Well it is London, where most voted to stay. We shall see, but no doubt with Farage in charge it will be triumphalist. I think everyone hates that kind of carry on myself.

Well said. Along with Helen McEntee they served us well. A lot of my UK relations and friends are envious of their professionalism compared to their own lot.

Well done her for enforcing the rules. Farage and his sycophants were playing up to their social media supporters. "Plucky UK gives two fingers to the monstrous EU. Take that Fritz/Frogs". It will help their narrative when the realities of Brexit hit home and their supporters need someone to blame for the fantasy they have been sold not materialising.

Whatever our views on Brexit, I was very disappointed with Mairead McGuinness as Vice-President of the European Parliament her remarks yesterday were an absolute disgrace, ''take your flags with you'' who the hell was she trying to impress, she just couldn't leave her FG politics outside the door, with an election shortly here, she thinks there's votes in ''Brit bashing'' banging the green drum, well she has a wake up call, this election is about homes, health and pensions, playing the green card is long gone. Insulting our nearest neighbours does nothing for Anglo Irish relations and Mairead McGuinness cheap shot low life remark yesterday does nothing for that, and is an insult to demorcracy, a position of Vice-President of the European Parliament should be above making personal insults and served with dignity and respect, yesterday she let the mask slip, just couldn't help herself getting a final dig in at our nearest neighbour, she lowered the office and lowered herself.

What is this nonsense ? A completely obscure view of anything and lack of understanding on everything.

She was doing her job and politely made fúckin mince meat of them and proper order. Like children they were.

Nigel Farage the man with the EU passport whilst waving his Union Jack. a contemptuous idiot who led a gang of fools to act with no respect waving flags in the faces of the EU members. Hopefully it will be remembered in future trade negotiations.

Taking about breaking the rules as they were just about to walk out the door was just silly but even worse she said 'take your flags with you'. And the tone she said it in. Deary me that wasn't a wise comment at all, and her comment about hate didn't really make up for how badly she managed that moment - trying to come across as all superior. I think she might hate flags herself - too inward looking. No best of luck or anything like that just pi*s off now will ye. She looked all ashen faced probably because her sub conscious was telling her she was handling this all wrong. But her comment about breaking the rules does make me laugh considering where we are.

Bottom line is no one cares about that idiot Farage and his motley crew apart from their supporters.

Will all be forgotten, if not already, and I bet the MEPs who are still members wanted to high five her TBH. It was over pretty quickly anyway.

She is the Deputy Head of the Parliament, and has to keep things civilised as best she can. Remember, she was speaking to the 27 not just us here and the gammons in the UK either. Protocol rules. IMV.

Britain is our closest neighbour and she would be wise to remember that.

Let the Brits be nutters all they want, but we need to deal with them.

One of the many things about Brexiteers is that they often say something that, taken in isolation makes complete sense, but when applied to the UK makes none. Being a proud independent trading nation is a great idea, but it is a non-sequitor as a reason to leave the EU.

So one of the things the Brexiteers are saying is "we have the upper hand, they need us more than we need them, so we can force them to get a better deal with the threat of no deal". This is, in isolation, true, but it just doesnt apply to the reality of the small UK thinking that the large EU is beholden to them in trade.

As it happens, it applies quite nicely the opposite way, that the UK needs the EU more than the other way around, so favourable trade terms can be achieved with the threat of no deal. Maybe we should start applying the brexit logic to the EU.

Sure they are our nearest neighbours and sure we need them. But this isnt personal, its business. We have an opportunity to shake em down a bit, so why font we do it.

And, much like Johnson, we can say the most horrible things about them, just as long as we start the sentence with "our friends and neighbours in the UK".

So I see no problem with the gloves coming off now

I don't think anyone from the 2 main parties will ever win that post again.

Mairead has done well but she has actions to answer for too, like any politician.

As i posted elsewhere she was great in this instance IMO.
Farage is a clown like figure and they all looked like Boris Johnson level idiots with their ties and flag waving. Good riddance.

Boris Johnson is some idiot alright, getting himself picked as PM, winning the British GE by a huge landslide getting stormont back on track and achieving Brexit after 5 months when others faffed around for over 3 years. He’s barely able to wipe his own backside. Why do we have to be insulted by these people?
It must be very frustrating for geniuses like fintan o toole and Richard Boyd Barrett and Ruth Coppinger, all major achievers movers and shakers with this fool getting in their way.

I meant his buffoonish image, as you quoted, (FYI: Farage got his Brexit too). Never said he wasn't dangerous and greedy.
Do you think he pushed for all that for the people? I doubt it.

Stormont wouldn't have been down that long had it not been for the Tory desire for power.
And Brexit wouldn't have got done unless Boris had been given an out by Leo and the EU in their meeting in Cheshire.

The next person needs to help him is Trump...good luck with that. He own's Brexit now, he can't blame anybody else now.

So the important thing for you is image? I know. Paul Murphy and R Boyd Barrett two champagne socialists in their wrinkled open necked sleeves rolled up shirts, Mick Wallace with his wild mane of dyed blond hair, Clare Daly with her harpy fake screeching working class Dub accent, the very embodiment of anti establishment, student demo, “sticking it to the man” left wing ideology.
Until you realise that they’ve achieved nothing, none of them, and at least some of them will be turfed out next Saturday because, as we’ve seen in the UK, you can only string the little people along with promises of untold riches with no obligations for so long until they get fed up.

Daly is from Kildare. Her father was a Colonel in the Irish Army and she has a degree from DCU - noting close to what you describe

They couldn't have looked any more pathetic standing there awkwardly waving miniature flags. Should have been thrown out immediately to avoid that level of cringe
