Why don't you ask the person who introduced the phrase to the thread?
    He's a know-it-all. ;)

You can ignorantly accuse me of "whataboutism," but what it really is involves identifying similar scenarios in order to see if it holds up when the shoe is on the other foot!

Skin colour and people's appearances usually something you comment on or is it just another double standard that only applies to people you disagree with?

Shifty shiff, sleepy Joe, creepy Joe etc.. I'm sure if I was a Twitter user I'd pull more out of the bag from Donnie's tweets..

Did you really just try to pull the racist card because someone criticised Trump for his use of SKIN TAN? Sweet Jesus, that's something I would expect to come out of a Monty Python sketch.

Now.... come on. Obama was under as much scrutiny as trump?

That is wholly untrue and if for one minute you think that trump and obama have been given the same treatment, and dissection of every statement, from the press and that is genuinely your position, there is no point in discussing this with you.

And you don’t think this might have anything to do with the way trump behaves no? The insults, the lies, the defamation etc. Do you not think any of that should have a bearing on how trump gets treated by the media?

I don’t know what age you are but maybe you’ve forgotten about the tan suit “controversy” or all the other nonsense that the right wing press dredged up during his tenure.

Nope. I asked if commenting negatively on people's appearance is something that is acceptable or only against people you don't like. Not for one minute did I mention racism.

Obama got far more scrutiny for far less yes.

If Obama had even said a quarter of the things Trump has said let alone done 1/4 of the things he wouldn't even have been allowed on Dem ticket never mind get elected

    No I don't.

I believe that trump was created by the media and he became a Frankenstein's monster. I think that if Obama, or anyone else for that matter, was scrutinised to the extent trump was, they wouldn't come out looking like anything other than a scumbag.

Well then your views don’t line up with reality.

How can he expect to be treated the same when he behaves the way he does?

Trump set the tone on day one by sending Sean Spicer out to lie to the media about his inauguration crowd size. Remember that? He then continues to lie and when the media call him out on it (their job) he throws the toys out of the pram and labels them an enemy of the people.

When did Obama or Bush ever do anything similar to that? I don’t like Bush but he treated the press with respect.

Scrutiny is only a problem when you’re a serial liar.

    In the US...
Of the 44 hardest-hit congressional districts – the top 10% in terms of deaths – 41 are represented by Democrats, while three are represented by Republicans. These include the New York-area districts, as well as those in the Boston, Detroit and New Orleans metropolitan areas. The average death toll in each of these hardest-hit districts was 1,122 as of May 20.

The next 100 hardest-hit districts, which represent the remainder of the top third of districts, with an average of 270 deaths, also are disproportionately represented by Democrats: 75 are represented by Democrats, 25 by Republicans.

About two-thirds (68%) of the 44 least affected districts – the bottom 10%, with an average 13 deaths in each district – are represented by Republicans in Congress.

Mother nature trying to tell us something regarding survival of the fittest, or simply something a campaign will use in the lead up to the election?

The inauguration... Was that when he emerged from the pillars of Athens to grace us with his presence and the mainstream media went wild with excitement and couldn't contain themselves. Oh, wait...

Well I have to wholeheartedly disagree and am frankly baffled that you could even begin to think that

You can disagree but you would be wrong.

Obama was about as clean cut as a politician can be in the US, conservative family man yet the press made scandals about him all the time.
    1. The fact his father was born in Kenya which made him non American
    2. That one time he didn't wear an American pin
    3. He saluted with a coffee cup
    3. He put djion mustard on his burger
    4. He wore a tan suit
    5. He didn't wear a suit one time in oval office
    6. A marine once held an umbrella over him
    7. He played basketball in the White House

Maybe you forget but the press tore him apart for weeks on end over these things which shouldn't even have been newsworthy to begin with. Not to mention Obama got so much grief over even attempting to somewhat fix a broken health system.

Now imagine Obama was doing the same things Trump and his team has been last four years (attempting to dig up dirt on his political rivals via foreign power, members of his team actively working with Russia to attempt to influence US election , calling Hispanics dogs and rapists, ignoring UN human rights laws regarding asylum seekers, calling the press enemy of the people, using office of President to further outlandish conspiracy theories, putting family members in high ranking positions, not removing himself from his business ventures)?

Or had the past Trump has (bankruptcies, multiple marriages, sex with porn star while wife is pregnant, university/foundation lawsuit, sexual assault allegations).

There currently is a proper way and method for voting by mail. We have almost no problem with the current method and their safeguards. Trying to make something out of nothing?

Can't these "current methods and safeguards" be rolled out across the country seeing as you have almost no problems with them..

I'm sorry...the press ripped him to shreds or fox news and breitbart did?

I remember that almost all other major outlets ridiculed (rightly so) the criticism of those.

Obama was far from clean cut. But he was glorified on talk shows and late night shows. He was in no way scrutinised in the same manner trump has been.

Trump is a gob****e. Absolutely. But to compare his treatment to any other political figure is absurd.

Do you think if bin Laden had been buried at sea with the doctored photo had happened in Trump's tenure that it would have been widely accepted?

The fact that you think the Dijon mustard "scandal" is comparable to anything trump has faced is proof for my argument and not yours.

Not the way they're proposing them.

    I disagree.

The media set the tone on day *whatever of trump's campaign where they made him the focal point of the circus. In my opinion, he should have been sunk after the first debate where he proved himself to be wholly incompatible to what was accepted as a politician.

The press ran with it, gave him an inordinate amount of airtime and coverage as it was good for ratings. Unintentionally, this resonated with middle America and they actually gravitated towards him and the genie then was out of the bottle.

Trump became an accidental hero (a phrase, I'm not actually lauding him as a hero)

They are now trying to put the genie back in and attacking him fervently (sometimes justifiably, sometimes not)

Scrutiny by the media, by journalists, should be beyond partisan politics.

I think fox are as bad as CNN. It's not news, it's not journalism.

If one good thing comes from trump's tenure is that faith in the media is at an all time low.

Trump is not a great or even good president. But he is not as bad as we are being led to believe. That is my opinion.

Are Fox News not the press? Breitbart didn’t exist back then as far as I’m aware.

You don’t seem to think that trumps behaviour should have a bearing on how he is treated. I’m curious to know why that is?

No other US president has behaved the way he does.
