Credit card unreadable

Any ideas why a credit card would become unreadable/faulty? Happened with one card and happened with the replacement after 3 months.

The way your are storing it maybe? I had a particular wallet that managed to rip a couple of cards right beneath the magnetic strip, before I changed wallets
