43'000 people. In a country of 4.6 million people. Is this why you're all freaking out and spilling bile everywhere? Is this what we have to put up with because of that minuscule amount of people?

The total population was almost 4.8 million at the time of the 2016 census, should be about 5 million by now.

If someone is working part-time or on casual hours throughout their working life, it's usually because they've have child-rearing or other caring responsibilities.

Cartman's view of the world is pretty one-dimensional.

I think Irish voters have had enough of stingy government. It's time to open the purse strings and invest in improving public services and infrastructure.

Contrary to the right-wing orthodoxy espoused by the likes of Cartman, doing so doesn't preclude a strong economy.

Needs to be a little calm, we haven't got the full numbers yet and we don't know what the new government will look like.

The basic scenario is pretty simple though (and was entirely foreseeable well before the election): does Martin go with FG or SF?
Based on his comments yesterday, one has to conclude he is at least giving serious consideration to the latter...

Hopefully our glacial civil service will keep their usual pace and so very little damage can be done whilst they're in power.

The hard working clever boy demographic tantrum is something to behold. Yeah we get it, you go out to work every day like 95 percent of the population. I don't think they issue any medals for that

We all do. We get in the car or get the bus and go into work, but most of us don't spend our waking hours giving ourselves brain spasms about people in tracksuits smoking cigarettes who may or may not be on the dole.

No brain spasms however the forever home brigade are frustrating.

FF and FG don't have the numbers on their own to form a majority. They'll need coalition or cooperation from another party or a cabal of independents to make up the numbers.

This FG denialism about their poor performance in government on key issues and issuing dire warnings about a party that isn't even government yet is quite something.

It's like someone getting fired from an office for a litany of screwups, and they're shouting at the new-hire accusing them of being a sex offender as they're being escorted out the door.

Are FG in denial ? I've seen several FG TDs acknowledge that the campaign didn't go at all well. Denial would be pretending it all went well which I've not seen on TV or radio from FG. They've said they won't go into coalition with SF which leaves FF having to square a circle about SF and coalition. I think we need to see 160/160 on the RTE election results page and then we will see the lay of the land. I think for anyone to assume or presume how this will play out is very premature.

The denial is in thinking their record in office was no reason for the outcome.

If you think SF are going to tackle the unions you're going to be disappointed. Its why nothing will happen in health bar pi$$ing money away and why they'll get no further down the road than what went before. I've dealt with senior civil servants, they won't take a dump unless they can get someone else to sign off on it.

If Sinn Fein were to say to PBP/SOL, I4C and other like minded TDs that benefitted hugely from the Sinn Fein surpluses, "we won't run a second candidate against ye in the next election if ye row in behind us now", then effectively Sinn Fein have mid 40s or more TDs now. I can't see how those other TDs could go against them now given the results of this election.

In such a situation, they could then set the agenda for a coalition with say FF as the junior partner. Then if such negotiations didn't work out, FF would probably get the blame for causing another election.

Could something similar work for businesses?

FG and FF are completely blind to reality. I think FG has some kind of echo chamber with the 65+ generation. In their mind FG are heavenly saints that can do no wrong. Its just a pity the ignored the rest of the population.

Correct, do you expect Louise O Reilly to sort out health?

Not unless she has billions to pump in to it.

And who do you think will have to pay.........:D

    Yes.
I haven't heard any of them yet refer to the mistakes they made that sees people withdraw their support from them.

Please stop. You are just proving that you don't understand tax law. The amounts reckonable for each E.U. Country where tax should have rightly been paid are not assessible at this stage.

I understand how the courts work and there has been no final decision. Just because the Fine Gael spin unit put fake news out there that Ireland will share the kitty does not make it true until such time as the European Court of Justice rules it that way. Yet we are told this ad nauseum. Some posters on here have swallowed the spin hook, line and sinker and repeat it verbatim without engaging their critical faculties. Until the ECJ rule on whether or not ASI is an Irish company nobody knows that with any certainty. Verstager said other countries "could" put a claim in, she never said they would win it. These are the undisputed facts separated from the FG spin.

But isn't that how every outgoing government is judged on ? I mean that's what they run on. And in five years time(or earlier) however is in government of the 33rd dail hopefully will be judged on their record in government good or bad.

Pretty sure the FG, FF and Revenue position is they want to give it all back to Apple. Do you have a link for this sharing the kitty claim? It's going to take years before it's resolved and my bet is still firmly on the IRS taking it.

If that's the case, then we vote out those who have failed.
If SF get into government, it doesn't stay that way for all time...you do realise this?

I guess we should just give FF and FG an other century to try so? Health doesn't need billions it needs reform. It needs to stop riding two horses. It needs to stop having private consultants taking advantage of it.

Thank you for allowing me to segway to this point: No previous Irish election has ever been the subject of so much social media campaigning as this one especially since the last main old media influencer has been directionless of late and is now owned by a company who couldn't care less about domestic politics.

It is also obvious that Irish mainstream politicians have no talent for social media which explains their unsuccessful rearguard actions in social media.
We now have a party of questionable integrity influencing power where most of their elected representatives are unknown quantities with respect to character or calibre.

It all sounds very unilateral. OK then, list some examples of waste that can be cut down.

The two of them, Greens and Labour would surely be enough.
See how long that lasts. Out of all the immediate options, it's likely to be last the longest.

80% of the electorate said no to FG, what is hard to understand about that? They have absolutely no mandate for government. They need to go to the opposition benches and recover under Coveney.
