Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Cavity walls

I think houses of 20/30 years old were built with a cavity wall.

However in the year 2020, are cavity walls still built? Or is there a more modern or different approach to how it’s done ?

Yes, cavity walls are still being built and personally I'm still a fan.
Lots of other systems being used also but cavity is a better weathering system than most.
Done right - properly detailed with airtightness and insulated it is still a good solution and is straight forward to produce a A rated house.

Do you mean cavity walls or cavity blocks?

So does that mean retro-filling the cavity with that mousse stuff was a mistake then? (I remember my parents getting that done in the late 70s).

Also, how complicated, expensive, or even feasible is it to make a 70s house airtight using current techniques?

'cavity wall' as a building system is hundreds of years old.... and is still a very valid system as its basic principles are sound.
