When I transfer data on to a pen drive, it will show the transfer speeds like a sawtooth, at times it appears to be doing nothing.

Is this just a quality issue with a cheap drive?

Maybe, but for periods it goes to zero and stops writing anything to the usb drive.

One of the differences between Windows and Linux is that the latter defrags files when it writes then to the drive. So slightly slower copying individual files, but the drive is less fragmented so it's faster.

Swings and roundabouts unless you are using an SSD

[RANT]wifi on Linux connects so much faster [/RANT]
