Nirvana as the song speaks to a younger me a holier me

99 red ballons is and always will be the greatest song ever written abut ballons

*fun fact, of all the songs about ballons it has been translated into the most languages** (i think)

Blue Oyster - come on its brilliant

Paint it black - i love what they did with it in westworld shamzing

Nirvana - That Queen song is just okay, they have much better. I'm not really a Nirvana fan, though I loved this song back in the day and I do think it was very influencial and deserves to go through here.
Fleetwood Mac - Easy choice here, my favourite Mac song.
Nena - Going against my better judgement, I would usually vote BR all day long but I'm loving this Nena more and more each time I listen to it.
The Stones - A decent song, TL have much better songs imo.

    Fleetwood Mac?

    Ok Boomers
Abstain - The over-35s can fight among themselves in this match-up.

Appreciating good music has nothing to do with age, you uncultured cretins...

a Millennial under the age of 35 ;)

    Queen - Somebody To Love
Easy decision. Queen are great. I've never understood the appeal of the other din - is it just a nostalgia buzz?

    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Pretty iconic song, though not my favourite of theirs. Nena is fun, but the "instrumental" bits in the middle let it down, for me.

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
Toughest call, but I'll go with Fleetwood Mac, though this isn't my favourite song of theirs either. BOC has nice oomph, but lyrically I don't think there's a whole lot going on.

    Thin Lizzy - Don't Believe a Word
Good lyrics, good melody, good guitar, what's not to like?

Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit >>>>>>It changed rock forever. The Queen song didn't change much.

Nena-99 Luftballons >>>>>Mainly because of the hilarity that would ensue if this song won the whole competition. Very good song, but I'm not sure what it's doing here in the last eight best ever songs. Has it had an easy draw or what? I don't know.

Fleetwood Mac-Go Your Own Way >>>>>Tough one, but Blue Oyster Cult already won the one-hit wonder comp, so I'll go for Mac.

The Rolling Stones-Paint It Black >>>>>That's actually my favourite Thin Lizzy song but I love the colour black and I agree with the sentiment. Paint It Black is also more of a staple, iconic classic to be fair.

    1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - One of those songs that defines a decade or a generation.

    2. Bohemian Rhapsody - Just epically brilliant from start to finish. Complete madness.

    3. Go Your Own Way - To annoy one or two under 35 non-Boomers...whatever the **** that means.

    4. Don’t Believe a Word - Great song, as is Paint it Black but going to show a little Dub bias on a coin toss for me.

Nena 7-2 up on Bohemian Rhapsody. Will it make a Liverpool-esque comeback before 9pm? Stay tuned folks.

Nirvana - reminds me of some good times.

Nena - brilliant song. Impossible to stop yourself singing and dancing along.

Blue oyster club - just not a Fleetwood fan tbh and this is a great song.

Thin Lizzy - not my favorite thin Lizzy song but still a great song from a great band.

Smells like teen spirit - somebody to love good but not as emotional
Queen- shocked red balloons is in contention
Fleetwood mac- Doleres o Riordan does a wonderful version of this
Stones- Thin Lizzy have no business being in the final 8.

They are the best of what's on offer.

Honestly, this all feels a little hollow since Smash Mouth left.

Bullsh1t top 8 with the exception of the nirvana and I would swap the Rolling Stones with Gimme Shelter.
I still reckon Hotel California is the greatest song recorded. And I would have Sigur Ros () number 8 in this top 8. The remaining 4 then maybe Strawberry fields, November rain, Losing my religion and Springsteen’s the river.

I actually nominated both but I have to go with Queen as they are awesome and I just love this song.

    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Same as above really other than that I didn't nominate Nena.

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
I think this is another one of my nominations and one of my favourite Mac songs.

Rolling Stones - Paint it Black
Just prefer this to that Particular Thin Lizzy song.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    - both great songs but this is my era, and it shaped so much music that I listened to in later years

    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
    - OK, it's over exposed and probably overrated but come on, compared to 99 red balloons...?

Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
    - neither are really in my ballpark but my mum loves this :)

Rolling Stones - Paint it Black
    - it's just the better track here, I think national pride might be guiding other votes ;)

    Quarter Final 1:
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit. Pretty much the song that defined grunge for most people

    Quarter Final 2:
Nena - 99 Luftballons. The best song in German ever to hit the charts.

    Quarter Final 3:
Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult. Fleetwood Mac have better songs than Go Your Own Way, and I just prefer this.

    Quarter Final 4:
Rolling Stones - Paint it Black. Classic Stones, and I just don't like Thin Lizzy.

Negative. Lyrics, melody, vocals, guitar solo are all great. Its only flaw is that it's too short :(

You’re right. Whole thing is a farce. If only people could vote for the songs they want to progress...

Was in a rush, adding reasons now :pac:

All these are pretty close I think but:

Queen - Just prefer somebody to love really, not much else to it.
Nena - both songs are impossible not to sing along to, but I enjoy Nena a bit more.
Fleetwood - Best song of what's left - not as good as the chain though.
Lizzy - Great song, love a bit of Phil

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 51,993 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Queen - Somebody To Love 4 12 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Nena - 99 Luftballons 10 6 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac 8 5 Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
Rolling Stones - Paint it Black 8 6 Thin Lizzy - Don't Believe a Word

And deco's reasons get added on the buzzer - they don't impact the scores massively though.

Your winners and semi-finalists in bold!

    Ok, here we go folks.

Reminder to give a reason for your choice or it will not be counted as a valid vote.

Quarter Finals will conclude at 9pm and the song with the most votes will advance to the semi finals.

just in the door, so missed deadline.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 51,993 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Ok here's how we shall work this.

The Semi Finals will run from now till tomorrow at about 4.30pm.

Most votes wins, and the song advances to the Grand Final.

The Final will then be posted about 5pm or so and people will have a chance to vote on that until 9pm.

    So without further adieu:

    Semi Final 1:

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

    VS

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

    Semi Final 2:

    Nena - 99 Luftballons

    VS

Rolling Stones - Paint it Black

Reminder that you must give a reason for your vote to count.

    And... we're off!!

Fleetwood Mac. Mostly to annoy people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,926 ✭✭✭Clarabel

Nena cause balloons. 99 of them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,474 ✭✭✭✭Tauriel

    Semi Final 1:
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
Although I love Smells Like Teen Spirit, I just think Fleetwood Mac is just a lot more fun. Although I wouldn't be disappointed if Nirvana wins.

    Semi Final 2:
Rolling Stones - Paint it Black
99 Luftballoons is a fun sing song but not worthy of getting this far in the competition.
