    Shocking after the Hoban effort.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,255 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Celje well rested in the 2nd half, hardly left their half. Bottom line: this Dundalk team not good enough, not a patch on 2016 side.
If Dundalk played Finn Harps tomorrow they would have 80% of the play, 80% of the chances- and still be beaten.

I’m afraid we’re seeing the end of an era of what was a fantastic Dundalk side. Lost too many top players to name but for me the only irreplaceable man is Stephen Kenny, and that’s showed in the last couple of seasons, particularly in Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,603 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

Disappointing. The RTE commentators were almost over the top positive. I really didn't feel like they were ever going to win that game, obviously Hoban unlucky to hit the post but hardly a clear cut chance. The reality is dundalk couldn't break them down and made bad errors at the back. 3-0 flatters Celje but Dundalk were not good enough to win tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Thought Dundalk were very poor. All three goals down to individual errors and they created nothing from open play. Their only real chance came from a kind rebound from an awful free-kick and you'd really have to wonder if Perth is the right man for the job there.

Kenny while hugely instrumental in Dundalk's 2014-2018 success wouldn't have got that Dundalk team tonight any further. No Towell, Horgan, Finn, O'Donnell, Benson and Rogers, Gartland, Shields, Massey, McMillan all in decline

Would it be the same side if he was over them though? Don’t think Perth has any business managing a team with Dundalk’s ambitions. Their whole recruitment policy has been jaded since that 2016 run. Alan Reynolds surely takes over if Perth is sacked?

A few Dundalk fans were delusional with where they thought club was going since Big Boys took over.

Not sure they will stick about much longer now that they can’t even get past 1st round again

How many of the current squad were signed by Kenny?

Sickening result. Three individual errors costing us because we were far better than that crowd. Let's hope for a soft draw for the Europa League to build confidence.

Somebody remind me again why we signed McMillan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,603 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

So do dundalk going into the europa league now, yes? Will they be seeded or unseeded in the next round in that?

They drop into Europa League 2nd round qualifier. They'll be seeded as themselves, Astana and Dinamo Tblisi are the only seeded champions league teams knocked out. Also can only be paired with champions league defeated teams from now on

Not that matters ( to a city lad)but
    Rogers
    Gannon
    Gartland
    Hoare,
    Duffy
    McEleney
    Hoban
    Flores

    For starters

    Shields ( and Mountney)already here
I don’t know why Cleary wasn't on tonight in place of Gartland

Great 7 years, history makers. Never out of the top 2.

I’ve said it before :City were probably the unluckiest team in the league during this time, any other time they probably would have won more.

Well known Perth isn't exclusively in charge of recruitment unlike Kenny mostly had until the takeover, the non-Irish players have all been signed from Peak6 contacts/networks and it's a structure that doesn't have any evidence of working in this league. I have similar concerns with Shels over their recruitment setup

Yeah the appointment of Reynolds seemed as a succession insurance policy incase Dundalk and Perth part ways, Perth is out of contract at the end of the season

    €560k down the Swanee

    Last year
    Riga €560 k
    Qarabag €560 k
    Slovan €260

    This year

    Celje €560 k

    ?????? €260 k

Hopefully get to another round but the real money is in champion league.

    Perth gone it seems.

Interesting what Peak 6 do now. Go for a cheap option(Reynolds) or someone from England or abroad.

Jesus that's big news. Would feel sorry for the guy, they have been poor since the restart but he won the league last year and assume he was popular with the players, they seemed to be very happy for him to get the job when Kenny left. Would be interesting to hear dundalk fans perspective?

Who do they get in now is the question? Going with someone from outside the league is a major risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,685 ✭✭✭✭ACitizenErased

He was completely out of his depth. Peak6 are in it for the money, he's getting them nothing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,770 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

Bit surprised at how sudden the decision is, I thought he would've been allowed to see out the european campaign

Peak6 want Champions League. He failed, miserably.

Probably go for a proven winner and somebody who's too good for this league. Somebody like John Sheridan.

Anyone know know what Dan McDonnell was alluding to on the podcast about dodgy transfer dealings?

"Vinny who" John Sheridan knew what was coming. Such an astute manager.

Allegedly Peak 6 were signing some of the players we bought this season from abroad. They weren't Perth's choices

    John Caulfield is free

Perth was never up to the standard, God love him. A really nice guy by all accounts but it wasn't working and he had a good run.

Even last year Rovers finished very strongly and beat them in the cup final. Dundalk were not amazing and had Rovers clicked earlier I reckon they'd have won the double.

Will be interesting to see what this lad is like who they brought in.

JS was right . Perth is still a good manager and will deff be back in the league or even lower league England

What will happen regards Alan Reynolds will be interesting

A big name (for LOI) could want his own coaching ticket

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,770 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

LMFM reporting a Canadian coach from Man City, Mark Burton, is taking over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

John Sheridan must be raging, he's going to have to learn another name now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,402 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Suppose it's sort of good news for Dundalk that they are hiring some lad from Man City. If they were planning to walk soon they probably would have just told Reynolds to take over.
Anyone know know what Dan McDonnell was alluding to on the podcast about dodgy transfer dealings?

Did he use the word dodgy? Haven't got to listen to it yet as it came out late last night.

I think Peak6 are very much into the Midtjylland/Brentford moneyball style of operating a sports team which is what I assumed he was referring to.

Burton was in Dundalk last week watching their cup game. That's cold blooded from Peak6.

Some random lads on twitter with some, shall we say interesting, things to say about this guy..

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4634126/Man-City-academy-boss-Mark-Allen-left-ban-probe.html

"in a separate development, a respected academy coach at City has been suspended after allegations of misconduct.

Canadian Mark Burton, who insiders say has been behind the success of some of the club’s younger age groups, is under investigation. The situation is being monitored by neighbours United, who could make a move for Burton should he leave City."

Literally don't know a single thing about this Mark Burton guy but my gut instinct is this is not going to end well for Dundalk.

There was good posts here recently about Cork's capitulation from 2017 dominance to relegation contenders in 2020 and it really does look like Dundalk are going all out to self destruct over the next few seasons like Cork

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,255 ✭✭✭joeysoap

I have a vague recollection of him being involved before. Was he the former Sky sports guy that was supposedly our overseas agent for signing players?

So the width of the post ( and crossbar) had nothing to do with it? If Mike Treacy was still the chairman would Vinny have been given longer? Possibly, probably but in fairness some of the signings have been puzzling and some of the selections too. 4 games since resumption( 5 counting Celje ) and far from a settled side. I don’t think the Benson and McGrath losses are fully appreciated but they were certainly missed last night.

Will be interesting to see what this lad is like who they brought in.

He won the league from 13 points behind Rovers to finish 11 points ahead of them - a full 24 point swing, he won the league cup up in Derry against a good Derry side, he was a penalty shoot out away from the treble in the Aviva against Rovers and then hammered Linfield to win the unite the union cup. He took us on our longest unbeaten league run as well.

The issue isn't to do with Vinny being up to the job, it's looking more likely that he was being undermined behind the scenes regarding team selection. It seems like a coincidence that this guy Burton (who nobody has a good word to say about) appears on the scene during lockdown as a 'coach' and then the league restarts and the whole style of play doesn't look right and we're dropping points all over the place.

The players and staff don't look happy and it's translating onto the pitch unfortunately.

At what stage do Peak6 decide to pull out? Maybe one more season if even, that 2nd spot in the League could come under threat if the League form doesn't improve.
