Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Dundalk need a new goalkeeper if they want any chance of getting Europe next year

    Shocking goalkeeping. Awful!!
If he stayed where he was it was a simple catch.

Brutal defending. That's a real pity because it's been a very enjoyable game to watch

    Heartbreaking.

Hard to believe that lad Oduwa represented England at underage level.

That's 190K we're going to lose in prize money from McCarey's two howlers tonight

Edit another saveable shot gone in!

Hate Dundalk but Christ, Rapid are some ****house of a team. Very unlikeable.

That Demir lad is a player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,289 ✭✭✭Azatadine

That lad in goal is shocking altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,676 ✭✭✭✭ACitizenErased

You'd wonder now what the case would be if they hadn't dropped Gary Rogers tonight.

You can go back to threads on here from 5 years ago and you'll find people saying Dundalk need a better keeper. It'll finally happen this winter it looks like but it's years too late.

Oduwa made the second goal. he has been good since he came on.

Oduwa has a knack of waltzing around Vienna's defenders.

Such a pity Dundalk couldn't get something from this game. Deserved a draw anyway

    Oduwu did well

This Nathan Oduwa is a different player, really had an impact tonight

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,762 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

Score three away from home and still lose  FFS

He's been on the ball a bit, and played a good pass for the goal, but his first touch is awful and he only has one foot.

Edit: he has made a positive impact in fairness to him.

I think I remember Rogers being dropped for Sava a few years ago due to consistent high profile mistakes.
As soon as Sava was in (and people had been talking him up), be was was doing even worse.

    Seems something similar tonight.
It's not easy to get really good goalkeepers.
Particularly ones who'll look the part in Europe when you're playing better teams and regularly under pressure.

Rogers for all his flaws might have done well enough to get Dundalk a win/draw tonight.
Even the Rapid keeper has been brutal, two howlers !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

They did so well, deserved a draw out of that.

Not often you score 3 away and lose.

Defence and keeper the weak link. Both awful with crosses. Rodgers is getting on a bit bit would have got a point had he been in nets tonight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,174 ✭✭✭hardybuck

Moral victories are of little use to them, but they should be confident when facing these lads at home.

There's nothing to fear from LOI sides in that Rapid Vienna 'higher standard'.

    Mannus is so precious...

Trapsttoni said there was no league in Ireland, so we gave him a job at reportedly €2M a year.

    We had Odumosu.

Chris shields will be impossible to replace whenever that time comes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,994 ✭✭✭c.p.w.g.w

McGuinness from Boh's is an option for Dundalk, he looked good when he played this year

Frustrating result. Amazing that an Irish clubs scores three in an away match in the group stage in the Europa League and still loses. Thought Shields was immense tonight and Oduwa came on and played really well amazingly. But the old goalkeeping failings come back to haunt Dundalk, we were saying that they were weak in goal when they were in the Europa League in 2016 and nothing has changed since. McCarey had a nightmare and you could say that he should have done better for all four of the Rapid goals. Rogers weaknesses on setpieces and passes in-between the defence and the goal have been known since 2009 when he was with Pats. They need a new keeper next season someone like Brian Murphy would make a huge difference for them. Mind you the Rapid goalie was a disaster zone also although he's their second choice goalie also.

Brian Murphy is 38 next may, how many years does he really have left?

I would prefer someone like james talbot myself.

One, possibly two and I'd be surprised if he left Waterford but he's the type and quality Dundalk need.

Brian Murphy, like Daryl, has gone home to retire.

Another two years in Brian at least if he's up for it.

Hard result to take, that one. Excellent performance and no reason why we can't get a point or 3 against this lot in 3 weeks.

    True :D

    Stung Rapid

We have form. We signed Tracy from uk ( Swansea I think ). Didn’t play him ( at all). Signed McCarey and released him after 2 years. He signed for drogheda. In danger of doing the same with Corcoran.

We had a cracking u17 and later U19 keeper. Also signed for drogheda. Saved a penalty last week against Cabo.

    Dundalk imploding, shocker.
The mental strength of Dundalk teams of the past is just not there. Complete capitulation.
    2-2, great game

    All in a couple minutes

If you took Arsenal out of that group then there is very little between the other 3 sides, Id be surprised if Dundalk don't snatch a result against either of the other 2 teams and its really only silly defensive errors that have cost them so far,

One positive to take away is that other LOI clubs can look at this and see how it is possible to compete at this level, gone are the days when we would be expected to lose against teams from Norway, Austria, Hungary etc. one of the benefits of clubs adapting a more technical aspect to their game and bringing that system in from youth level all the way up to senior team

Hopefully the LOI can gain new fans from this Dundalk run in europe. our teams deserve to be supported, forget about the premier league, get out an go to a live match in your own country.

Unfortunately I cant see Dundalk gaining too many fans from this Europa league run, or indeed other LOI clubs benefitting from it, some people might tune in to watch Dundalk v Sligo in a decrepit looking Oriel park and straight away it looks like a poor product on tv,

We are always going to have this problem until we invest in the right structures and facilities we are going to be miles behind clubs from other European nations, and its not a quick fix either, the league needs a 5-10 year plan and everybody will have to be on board from the underage structures to the clubs, the fans, the committees, the FAI and the new CEO, now is the time to take advantage of the opportunities we have

Totally agree with you. There is no short term fix and it has to be everyone rowing in the same direction both in terms of facilities and the overall structures of bringing though players that can succeed at a top level.
