Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've been thinking about this for a while. I haven't given up anything for Lent in years and usually did extra things instead, like visiting a local nursing home, going to mass mid week etc. But this year I think I'll try giving up my morning biscuits with my coffee as well, because we had a tough year and things came good recently, so it would be more in Thanksgiving than penance.

Perhaps you would join me in giving up jogging ?

    ;)

:D It's almost 40 years since I last jogged anywhere and I think the Man Upstairs is well aware of that.

If I was really serious I'd give up the smokes, but that's a step too far.

I think I’m going to try giving up being cynical and so negative.

I might try giving up wine but that could be very hard - & things are hard enough.

Talking too much to strangers - apart from on boards.

Think I'll give your first one a go.

Talking to much to strangers - do you mean telling them to much about yourself or just being chatty?

    Who's wife?

Makes no sense. Can you clarify?

    Alternative answer:
    She is (points)

Drink, fags, and nice food. Maybe coffee too.

Thought you were going to say rollerblading after reading Drink, Fags.

I'm giving up work for lent to hopefully become pregnant and get myself a free house.

I'd like to try to give up tea (it's the one vice I have left..) to see if I could, but I can't bring myself to do it this year anyway.. maybe next year..

I kicked the rollerblading in the great lent of ‘98.

I look forward to lent, gives me the incentive to give up the sugary addiction and exercise a bit more.

Its mad how the commercialisation of things has made it hard for people to avoid sugars. As soon as New Years passes, they have the Easter Eggs on display for next to nothing. Anybody who does lent and wishes to abstain must find it hard not to indulge with all the offers of cheap chocolate

I find it extremely hard, chocolate especially, lent for me is the start of a lengthy process of abstaining form it and most snacky processed foods usually up to christmas where i sadly start to indulge again.

I'm giving up sweet f*ck all. Haven't been on a guilt trip since I retired from orthodox religion.

I am gone off cheap chocolate. Only enjoy the mad dark and expensive stuff now. If you work your way up the % scale slowly you can wean yourself off it but it wont save you any money

Remember in primary school you'd say "I'm giving up homework" and it was absolute comedy gold.

    That takes me back.

Reminds me of when you were given a Trocaire box and it was like a competition to fill it. The teacher used to read out who brought the most money; terrible when you think of it now!

Ours always started well with us donating all our pocket money. A week or so in we started to raid " The Skinny Mans Box" when the ice cream van came round.

Still a guilt trip over that, so just ordered a Trocaire box now.
