Yeah missed that. Really bad news I'm afraid

The only positive is that if we can manage to contain the spread until we are out of flu season then it becomes clearer when people might have this virus. The initial case in Italy was mistaken for flu.

Leaked regional govt documents suggest the number of confirmed cases in the Chinese province of Shangdong is some 52 times higher than officially recorded.

The first case has arrived in Denmark.

A further 17 cases in Kuwait. Really serious for such a small place.

    First case in Estonia.

That's a misrepresentation. The daily rate is alleged to be 1.36 to 52 times higher on particular days. Not 52 times the total number, which is what you are trying to suggest in an ongoing attempt to paint an apocalypse.

The leak says that 755 cases are recorded in the province, with the true figure being 1,992. So 2.63 times the recorded number, not 52 times it.

Obviously under recording is a wider problem in itself, regardless of scale, but your post is trying to make it sound worse than it is.

The Daily Mail have to lot to answer for.

Are there any worldwide figures to show what age the deaths are at?
    Yes.

Nobody under 10 has died from it. Death rates are high for the elderly.

That goes against what many experts have said, in that it should fade(int he most part) in the summer, with the virus re-emerging in those who have been infected and dormant once flu season kicks back in

But if you started cancelling football matches and music concerts etc, you'd end up having to cancel everything : cinemas, restaurants, offices, colleges, schools, public transport, you name it (that would be a quite insane overreaction).

Are the government not here to serve and protect? Why not allow organisations have facilities that are unsafe.

    Yes.

2.8% male compared to 1.7% female.

France, which at the time of publication had recorded 17 cases and two deaths, has prepared 108 hospitals, with at least one in every region, to admit, isolate and care for coronavirus patients. It has also boosted testing capacity in hospitals in Paris and Marseille to more than 1,400 per day, according to Health Minister Olivier Veran.
Meanwhile, Germany's health ministry has allocated 23 million euros ($25m) to its coronavirus response and said it was "well prepared" for new cases, noting its advanced warning and reporting system and a coordinated network of specialist clinics.
In Switzerland the interior ministry has announced tests will be made available to all people exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
In the United Kingdom, a number of schools have closed for the week over concerns pupils may have contracted COVID-19 - its official name, from Corona VIrus 2019 - while skiing in Italy during half-term, the Press Association reports.

Ireland. Meh we're grand. Here's some posters...

If you're under 50 it looks like it might not have that much chance of doing damage.

I’m pretty sure someone under 10 has died from it, I’ll see if I can find a reliable source.

Edit: nope, article said infected only. No deaths yet.

Agreed we are past containment but there's still the possibility to try and slow it down, to give a chance for treatment/vaccine to "catch up"

This is a new virus previously unknown to humankind until December 2019, so we have no immunity to it like we have for the flu virus.

There is no approved treatment or vaccine at present.

Treatments/Vaccines will need to be discovered, manufactured and then tested to see if they are safe for administration to the patients/general public.

This process will probably take at least 12 to 18 months according to experts.

The main reason to try to slow it down is to prevent a surge of very sick patients overwhelming our health service

The situation in Germany is very worrying, the man from North Rhine-Westphalia who is in critical condition had attended numerous carnival festivities just days before being admitted to hospital. His wife also tested positive and she works in a preschool. Authorities are searching for all of the people who attended the carnival festivities. Lots of people were out and about at parades, parties and balls in Germany over the last two weeks...

You're unlikely to die if you're under 50 unless you have a comorbid condition, but we don't really know what damage it can do. There is some evidence that it might damage the testicles and kidneys. I don't think we'll get an idea of any long term effects until we are past fire-fighting mode.

    So todays figures:

    Coronavirus Cases:
    81,178
    Deaths:
    2,766
    Recovered:
    30,278

Based on the above, looking at over the last 2 days (worldwide):

    1449 Cases
    139 Deaths
    4999 Recovered.

So the fatality rate over all is hovering around 8% at the moment, should drop further based on the above indicators (i.e more people getting infected and recovering).

China (if you believe them, since they reclassified how they caoallate this information) have also seen there severe cases drop below 9k.

Active cases also dropping overall based on the above figures.

    So today's cases as below:

    Coronavirus Cases:
    82,393 (+1215)
    Deaths:
    2,807 (+41)
    Recovered:
    32,966 (+2688)

    Couple of trends appearing:
    • There are now more new cases occurring every day outside of China than within.
    • Worldwide, the number of newly recovered patients has been greater than the number of newly infected every day since Feb. 19 (for the past week).
    • The number of serious and critical cases, as well as of new deaths, is declining worldwide.
    • However, with a declining trend in China and a sharp increase in cases outside of China (where the outbreak is still in its initial stages), it is critical to analyze the two trends separately.
    • The questions we must address now are:
    1) What factors determined the decline in China (and, most importantly, the limited spread of the virus outside of Hubei)?
    2) Are these same factors (which seem to include very firm and quick actions being implemented at an unprecedented scale) present outside of China? If not, the outcome might turn out to be quite different, unless another course of action is undertaken immediately.
In depth analysis, reviewing the findings from WHO’s Bruce Aylward report after spending two weeks in China, to be published later today.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information going around about hand sanitizer... From what I've read, if the sanitizer contains a high percentage of alcohol it will kill some viruses. Do we know if it successfully kills this virus? Also some sanitizers mightn't even contain alcohol.

Just get one that says it contains over 60% alcohol.
If it doesn't specify, assume it doesn't. If it lists something else as the first ingredient then you know it doesn't.

For those who have just started reading the thread or those who still have questions about the who, what, why, when...... the German health ministry page is very informative and easy to read. It’s in English too so no need to translate.

It shows how incredulous China's figures are as well. Even if you stretched yourself to believe SK has more new cases than China due to containment measures what happens when the factories and cities reopen?

The figures are patently absurd. SK has proper testing, the most comprehensive in the world and an open democracy. Much more valuable in terms of a fair representation.
