This is what we'll keep hearing from the same ostriches over and over. "Ah sure it's only 5 or 20, then it'll be "ah sure it's only 100" and so on and so on.

You keep saying stuff like this. What exactly do you want us to do?

Whilst I dont agree with panic, its not the same as when the UK got cases a few weeks ago. This is now rampant across Europe and will likely spread through Ireland rapidly over the next few weeks.

    It’s the same.
    It’s the exact same virus.

It’ll cause disruption but it won’t shut the country down if we keep the heads

Will the presenters on the 9 news on RTE be wearing plastic bags like the Romanian presenters did last night?

I can't figure out how this hasn't totally thrashed India or Indonesia? It seems that tropical countries are escaping the brunt due to their warm climates and there seems to be a definite correlation between warmer temperatures and this viruses inability to spread as well as colder countries further North. The Philippines for example had 3 cases and one death and it never spread due to the heat in the country.

Was listening to David Heymann of the WHO being interviewed on BBC's Hardtalk programme and he said he's not convinced climate is a factor. He cited Singapore as a country not seeing the benefit of that.

This is getting really serious now. I’m starting to panic. I really think the HSE needs get its head out of the sand and call for international help, get information from people with experience in this sort of national emergency, people like Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo who have track records in successfully combating contagious viral diseases

I'd imagine the reason for the high rate of hospitalizations, is that the bloke this can be traced back to spent 6 days in hospital before being diagnosed. So was probably infecting sick people already.

    That's a reassuring point, thanks

    Good article

    https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-unnecessary-panic-experts-say-2020-1?r=US&IR=T
The novel coronavirus seems to have a low fatality rate, and patients are making full recoveries. Experts reveal why it's causing panic anyway.

Psychological research shows novel threats raise anxiety levels more than familiar threats, and people tend to underreact to familiar threats.

For example, there's about a one-in-seven chance that heart disease will be the cause of an American's death, whereas the chance they will die at the hands of a foreign-born terrorist is one in 45,808. But according to a 2016 Chapman University survey of American fears, "terrorist attack on nation" and "victim of terrorism" both ranked among the respondents' top five worries.

Reasons for hope during this coronavirus outbreak

Experts say a few factors should ease global fears about the coronavirus: First, it was identified and determined to be a new virus more quickly than ever before. A week after it was discovered, Chinese authorities had already sequenced the virus and shared it with labs around the world.

Martinello also said that for people in the US, the seasonal flu poses a much higher risk. At least 19 million Americans contracted the flu in the last four months and 10,000 have died since October.

The preventative measures for both the flu and the coronavirus are the same: handwashing, avoiding face touching, and steering clear of contact with anyone who's sick.

However, the familiarity of the seasonal flu means the general public usually underreacts to its threat. Martinello said he hopes the widespread worry about the coronavirus could lead to lower rates of seasonal flu this year as people take better precautions.

    Chief medical officer in NI
"person did not attend their general practice and self-isolated. He said he is confident that the PHA and the health service are "on top" of dealing with the case."

Good at least the person followed advice and self isolated. Massively reduces the chances of more cases.

Nobody said it wasn't? Doesnt change the fact a few isolated cases in the UK a few weeks ago that were properly tracked and isolated is entirely different to the situation today of multiple clusters breaking out around Europe, some with no known connection to infected areas. We now have H2H community outbreaks in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Air travel will see this replicated in Ireland very soon.

Just got back from Lidl. If any of you haven't been to the shops yet get down there now. The staples were barely left on the shelf. It's mostly just that weird polish stuff left.

Home now and have boarded up the windows and doors. The family are safely inside and we have enough polish pickled cabbage and sausages to see us through to June.

200 people on the flight though. This will get bad quickly.

    Hold on...

Same as a case in Poland
Positive for Corona but not positive for the current virus two other test turned out negative.
Could this be the same, there sending samples for further examinations in the UK
