Ah here. Please tell me you're trolling.

Do you have anything whatsoever to support those claims?

    Total and utter scaremongering bull****.

So 70% of the population are going to get it, so 3.5 million people, of which 8% are going to die. So you're saying it's going to kill 280,000 Irish people. Good god.

    Relax, only 60%
The killer coronavirus could infect more than 60 per cent of the global population if containment methods fail, a top Hong Kong medical official has claimed.

Professor Gabriel Leung, chair of public health medicine in the city, also said even if the death rate sits at one per cent, it could still kill millions of people.

With the global population currently at more than 7billion, that means the virus has the potential to infect more than 4billion, if Professor Leung is correct and its spread continues to accelerate.

And if one per cent of those people die, that means there will be more than 45million deaths.

But World Health Organization chiefs yesterday urged virologists to stop 'throwing around figures that there is no basis for'.

Leung gave a rather interesting talk: https://panopto.lshtm.ac.uk/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=83ba0783-b1ce-4053-aaa5-ab6600da76d8

People on here are nuts! Panic is a terrible thing.

Infected in Italy went from 1 to 50 in a couple of days.

China’s National Health Commission reported 327 new confirmed cases and 44 new deaths as of Feb. 27.

Altogether, China has 78,824 confirmed cases and the death toll was at 2,788.

South Korea confirmed an additional 256 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total to 2,022, according to its Centers for Disease Prevention and Control.

Yes saw these figures in the paper today.
This gives a death rate of close to 3.5% which is not the " 2 % mortality rate" being claimed before .
That is an unbelievable amount of people dead from a virus some are claiming is no worse than a cold.

New Zealand have a case just off a flight from Tehran, they're now banning travel from there. Will they start banning Europe soon I wonder?

Some Hyundai plant is closed after a worker tested positive in South Korea. Stocks in Asia collapsed overnight.

    Lithuania has a case too.

Disneyland Tokyo shutting for a few weeks.
    It's in Nigeria too

    Etc etc, fast moving story

    More here:
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/feb/28/coronavirus-live-updates-latest-news-china-wuhan-stock-markets-update

Oh and South Korea jumped up past 2000 cases on their morning update , morning in their time zone. Their evening update due in a few hours ....

Korea is where the action is now, daily new cases surpassing China - and considering the relative size of the population compared to the PRC, a very serious situation is unfolding there.

One wonders what is happening in North Korea as well.

In one foul swoop, the issues of unsustainable pension funds, healthcare cost, housing costs, carbon emissions and an over heated equity market was solved. The price is a bit high though.

How did the lockdown in Dublin go overnight? Or are you still protecting your source?

Don't understand why they won't give out the flight number/date of the plane the NI case arrived on - they are "trying to trace the passengers".

In the meantime there are probably hundreds of concerned passengers from unaffected flights from Milan calling the HSE helpline for advice.

It's mad anyone can be called dramatic after what happened in China, let alone the fact that it has gone global. But 80% are mild cases most people don't die from the flu so...

I think it's mainly immature people refusing to accept what we are on the brink of. They came out in force yesterday to ruin what had been a decent discussion and a good resource to keep track of the news on the virus.

What really is the point now. Sure more flights due in from Italy today. Absolutely pathetic greediness being put before citizens health concerns.

    It is going to spread

But It will spread less, and slower, if your a little bit more considerate about what you do and who you cough on!

    .

Any good tips on who you decide not to cough on?

There was a guy who got into a bit of trouble at that craic a few years ago on who wants to be millionaire, I would steer clear of that carry on.

We got to keep the cogs moving, 40% of working people here are bust after missing 2 paychecks. It would be pandimonum on the streets.

It’s nothing at all to do with greed. Pretty sure there aren’t even any laws allowing govt (or any Eu govt) to close borders/ports of entry. This is unprecedented remember.

And even if they did, you end up with mass panic on a truly big scale. And that’s a whole other nightmare situation you then have to handle when you actually don’t have to create it in the first place.

Less of the hysteria today please. We’ve enough of it.

Just on Newstalk - a company in Limerick makes a million masks a week with a 45 person workforce. They are scaling up to 24/7 and 2.75 million masks a week. 45 people seems like good insurance against this kind of thing right. Maybe we`ll learn about some important things about insurance against supply chains based in other countries

Yes this is also a reason to protect indigenous agriculture like beef and dairy. Imagine the country without any food in a global war or pandemic. Whatever about masks!
