We are looking at the potential of 106,085 dead in Ireland...

If you are gonna quote and forecast figures at least use real figures and not made up ones

You'd have to think it best to shut work places amd schools now to contain this thing.
    That isn't going to happen
It hasn't happened anywhere else, especially not after 1 case.

Loving the "east of the country" description. It's like if they don't give any more details it'll be grand.
I am now picturing an episode of Father Ted and how long will it be before Simon Harris focks of to Angola?

so have HSE traced the people on the plane on which this person travelled? They are going to be a risk too. We'll probably see a sudden cluster of people now in East of the country. Even that would test the HSE's capabilities.

Surely now Italy should be shutting its airports (or at least we should stop people travelling here from Italy or anywhere that has confirmed cases)?

You said the death rate is 2%-3%. The lowest end of that range is the death rate at the epicentre of the outbreak and widely accepted to be an inflated number.

But you're right, we have enough problems supporting Spurs than to be arguing about coronavirus... :D

Well I’m not sure if it’s widely accepted in fact I’d argue people are saying that numbers suppressed. But I will agree spurs are enough to be worrying about at the minute.

You have to feel sorry for the residents and staff of this nursing home. Iv'e a real fear we are going to see these scenes repeating a fair bit over the next while

i honestly don't know how hospitals will cope with anyone needing Intensive care theres no beds no room, the Icu's in our hospitals are tiny and probably already at capacity and then where do the staff come from already under staffed to look after the patients they have at the moment. I had a relative in St James recently there were 2 nurses for a whole ward for the night shift thats a ward of at least 30 beds they forgot to give my relative meds on several occasions as they just couldn't cope its a shambles on an average day. And thats a mild story I have heard waaay worse.

Very good chance he wasn't even contagious on the plane - maybe he was over there a week, caught it mid hols. Be a while before he was even able to spread the virus. Bigger concern would be people he's associated with back in Ireland

? He would be contagious without showing symptoms not the other way round.
That’s a fact that has been observed.

The HSE and government seem to be more interested in appealing for people to remain calm instead of doing all they can to avert this crisis. Here's a crazy thought, people would be a lot calmer if they had put a stop on flights coming in from a known virus hotspot a few days ago.

If you had the choice which would rather you have - coronavirus or Jose Mourinho?

You don't suddenly become contagious after you get infected - probably more likely caught it in the airport than walking around outside in Italy

We ve known that for years and we havent sorted it, it was only a matter of time before something like this finishes the job, as a country we cant really complain we have let this happen.

They should cancel travel or put people into quarantine before hand.

What % of the cases globally are still those who have come from affected outbreak areas or their close relatives, friends, business associates? Obviously this isn't good, but if you're not up close with a carrier and just a passing member of the public are your chances of catching greatly reduced still? This all assumes there isn't a big cluster.

It would be a dereliction of duty if they weren't planning for it for the last number of weeks. That doesn't mean they can contain an outbreak or stop the spread.

If anyone seriously thinks they were sitting around pretending there was no coronavirus for the last few weeks, they need to take off the tinfoil hat.

    Youre being ridiculous.

I don't doubt they were planning but it's very obvious (based on interviews from the professionals) that their capacity to execute their plans will be far from sufficient.

Jack Lambert, a specialist in infectious diseases at The Mater Hospital and UCD has stated that 20% of people who contract Covid-19 will become very sick and will need to be in ICU with up to an expected 4% mortality rate.

According to the experts, we don't have the requisite facilities to properly follow infectious disease protocols in the event of an outbreak.

    Its not my opinion.

Take from that what you will.

Very true I can never understand why the Irish are so passive (me included), the French now they know how to take a stand and protest and let the government know they wont take it but us we just carry on.

We have one of the best health systems in the world despite obvious weaknesses at certain times, stop moaning.
