Couple bottles of Smirnoff to weather the storm. I will see if this virus can survive in hostile environment.

Swap the Smirnoff for champagne and we have ourselves a plan.

I heard the bubbles stop the spread of deadly diseases and if I go down, I'm going down in style!

    So heres a scenario:

Couple with lets say 3 school gping kids, two primary one secondary, both adults work

Secondary school closes as suspected case of coronavirus. All pupils should quarantine

So i assume both adults shouldnt go to work but will they be certified as ill if they arent actually ill. Not all employers would pay while out sick either

This is where it would be nice to have some info on what plans the State has

    All should quarantine.

Good point...that will be very reassuring for the families of the near 3000 people that have died directly as a result of this virus, whereas they would most likely be alive otherwise

My main concern is possible disruption.

The show must go on eh

Where do you draw the line on concern for people? Is anyone over 50 of no concern? 40? I'm guessing you are the young side (so am I, but my reading is rather different to yours)

Anywhere from 200 to 1000 deaths per year in Ireland.

Not one case of Corona Virus in Ireland, yet people are acting like it's armageddon.

Not much longer now and it will be a 100% positive rate for everyone that was on the ship

More bad news, when questioned on how they know mild cases that have not been missed (that the current 80/20 stats are incorrect) ..

You can always count on @HelenBranswell to ask the most important question: What’s the evidence for there not being many more mild cases that have been missed? Aylward says in multiple provinces thousands or tens of thousands of people were screened and few #COVID19 cases found.

WHO cares about all these people dying, they're doing what they can, but in all fairness what can they do. They have zero control.

yeah i don't get all the hate thrown their way. they're a bunch of academics with no power to make governments do anything. what exactly are people expecting from them? Who branded medical-SWAT teams to shut down the entire world and tell everyone to start panicking?

Nonsense. They will deal with this just as they do everything else; with a new tax/levy/surcharge.

    Two new cases in France
Another death in Italy (total 11) - running at nearly 3% CFR, bit scary if the deaths keep increasing as they are more like Wuhan in figures

This could potentially be the first viral pandemic in the history of humanity that wasn't just a cross your fingers job.

The leap in understanding and medical, communication and pornographic technology since the last is staggering. We wont beat the next one. Or maybe a few after that but the inexorable progress of medical and pornographic technology means its the future is bright for vaccinated sexbots.

If a large part of the problem is the immune system going overboard and catching the "good stuff" in the crossfire while attacking the virus, is suppressing immune system reactions such as, say, a fever, with paracetamol a good or a bad thing?

With that very thing in mind they have tried corticosteroids one treating this and SARS-1, but it actually makes things work. Paracetamol would provide some symptomatic relief and we should all have it in stock, but being very careful about paying heed to dosage.

You're missing the point. The people who don't present at GPs or hospitals are not on the official "infected" lists. Regardless of the symptoms the number of infected people is most likely significantly higher than the official figures.

You're missing the point. It's not at all widely accepted there are massive numbers not in hospital, it may be thought/hoped to the case and I'm sure that was part of their mission, to confirm this. Theyre stating that they found this NOT to be the case. But I suppose you know better right?

I dont trust china to not have carefully choreographed his entire visit. Sure initially they werent going to allow him enter Hubei at all.

I know. It works if it is one village but take ten or fifty or some city like Milano or Rome and then it gets interesting. I mean due to chinese regime we have no chance to find out how people cope in big regions when they are quarantined.
I still remember what 3 days of snow did to us not so long ago. Shops were literally cleaned out of bread within few hours.

To be fair it’s not like there was famine. We stayed in drank cans and ate our weight in pizza.

He read out a notice that he received under his door this morning which said: "We regret to inform you that for health reasons the hotel has been closed down. Until then the sanitary authorities warn that you must remain in your rooms." He said he could see other people at the pool area so he and his travel partner joined them.

Can we just shoot these two mongos on general prinicple whenever they arrive back in this country?

The 11th Italian victim is a 76 year old woman who was taken to hospital today after she developed sudden respiratory issues. Scary how quickly conditions can deteriorate, she was an undetected case and wasn't even in hospital
Lower below in the article they mentioned that 95% of people survive, not sure where they get that figure but it's closer to reality than the previous ones

50000 people die from pnuemonia in the US every year. How many deaths from Corona virus so far?

Pnuemonia is a complication of viruses such as the Corona virus as well as other viral and bacterial infections.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumonia

"Pneumonia is usually caused by infection with viruses or bacteria and less commonly by other microorganisms, certain medications and conditions such as autoimmune diseases."

"Pneumonia affects approximately 450 million people globally (7% of the population) and results in about four million deaths per year"

So a fatality rate of less than 1%.

The problem with the Corona virus is that so far the fatality rate is seen to be greater, and possibly significantly greater than 1%. Estimates range, as we have seen on this thread, from 2% to 9%.

One thing that you can be sure of is that the Corona virus will lead to an increase in the number of deaths from pnuemonia.

Surely only a matter of time before we start to get a shift in response from the EU.

BACK TO WHO CONFERENCE: Oh, big question, What is your response to the suggestion that millions are infected and over 250,000 are dead.

"I didnt got everywhere in China but I think the numbers/data we have are reflective of the cases." In short, this is uncorroborated hyperbole.

Treatment trials "Some groups are trying multiple clinical trials"

Question "Why is there a disparity between figures in Wuhan and the rest of China?"

Response: "Wuhans higher mortality rate probably due to a couple of things. It happened fast and people didnt know how to treat it. The sheer scale. At the beginning of the outbreak we were seeing severe diseases"

Mortality Rate: "This is still a big problem and a concern"

Question: "How do you explain the fast spread in Italy and why they were not ready and when you mentioned war, what did you mean by that ?"

"I have not been in any other country who has been managing this thing so I dont know the circumstances of different countries. But there is really important lessons we can learn from it. This tells you what this virus can do. I keep hearing people say well that happens because of this (ie we just dont know why its popping up in random spots).

    1. Think the virus is going to show up tomorrow. If you dont think that way you wont be ready
    2. If it hits us we have to stop it (otherwise you have lost before you started)
    3. You know you are going to need beds, quarantine close contacts so you have to be able to accommodate those people
    4. You need enough ventilators
    5. You need to be bale to transfer people
    6. YOU need the lab capacity to test people (not an x-ray - In china they CT scan them - How many countries have CT scans and how many can they put through in a day)
    7. Do you have people who know how to fill out an investigation form, where thats going to be sent and who will reivew it ?
    8. Talk to your population - "Folks we have to be ready to do this tomorrow"
    9. Talk to people who have done it (China - hence all the praise for China)

    All "Super dooable" . .

So fail to prepare, prepare to fail. This has been a really good conference

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF6AZv8P3i4

How is there only 1000 people watching this ?

Is a CT scan really the way they test for it? No other way? Just seems a bit extreme.
