But china doesn't lock down whole cities every year for the flu, does it? So either they know something different, or they're just playing a madbuzz practical joke on us all.

Mainly because it is highly contagious and spread more easily than regular flu I would imagine. But it's still something the vast majority of people recover from.

At this moment in time, I reckon far more people are affected by the devastating floods going on in UK. Not many threads about that naturally here in Ireland, although the number of people affected is far more than those who MAY be affected by Corona V.

But it is swings and roundabouts I suppose.

Yes, a bad winter flu. Total deaths so far are around 2000 people......not 2 million.

Well if they used that word and she did not die blame whoever wrote the piece but to succumb to something means to die of it.

There is a lot of fake stuff going around avoid dubious sources like Twitter and RTE.:)

BBC news tonight said that experience to date shows that 81% of those with the virus get only a very mild form that doesn't require any medical treatment. Which is a comfort.

That said my sister in law who is a senior nurse in a large Dublin hospital phoned to insist we go out tomorrow and buy suitable face masks. Which is a bit disconcerting.

For comparison, the NHS guidelines are much stricter.

IF you have been to "to Hubei, Iran, areas of northern Italy in lockdown or "special care zone" areas in South Korea since 19 February" AND
Even if you do NOT have symptoms:
THEN Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111, stay indoors and avoid close contact with other people.

Not this crap again. The NHS is not being stricter at all and you have not read far enough down the page on the NHS website. You are posting incomplete information...please stop.

The bit you are missing: (https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/)
You only need to stay away from public places if you've been:

to Hubei province in China in the last 14 days
to Iran, areas of northern Italy in lockdown or "special care zone" areas in South Korea since 19 February
to other parts of mainland China or South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14 days and have a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath
to other parts of northern Italy (anywhere north of Pisa, Florence and Rimini), Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar since 19 February and have a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath
in close contact with someone with confirmed coronavirus

Mentions having symptoms. Have you a link to what you quoted or are you deliberately posting misinformation?

I'm reading the same link as you. Look at it again.

In the bullet point for to Iran, areas of northern Italy in lockdown or "special care zone" areas in South Korea since 19 February
There is no AND have symptoms clause.

You proceed directly to Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111, stay indoors and avoid close contact with other people.

    Yeah sure it is.

And I thought some of the comments on here were daft...

Lots of them there (youtube) really do think there is something to be said for another mass.

It's probably a mis-translation, something to watch out for some of the sources.

So far...so far... We do what we can about the flu. Including an excellent vaccine which saves many older and vunerable people. This appears to spread more easily, is infecting people who aren't old and vunerable, and the vaccine is at least 12 months away. Oh and it may not go away in the summer.

    Just the flu....

Yes, that person has not died apparently.

Very surprising for the Guardian to word something in that way.

So if 81% are mild cases.... what sort of mild symptoms does one suffer when they contract phneomonia?

Its not influenza, its a coronavirus. This virus attacks organs and causes a shutdown of the body for alot of people, intensive care will be overran when it arrives and as our healthcare is as it is we wont be fit to handle this. Politicians are now afraid to be wrong. Hopefully they start to take correct measures, cancelling flights would be a good start

You don't... it's the other 19% that develop secondary complications such as pneumonia, heart attacks, organ failures.

Spraying gallons of disinfectant over abandoned streets strikes me as an idea from someone who is losing the ability to think rationally.

Well, unless people go about habitually licking streets and pavements I don't see the use of this.

    was that released today?
This is exactly what the NHS did weeks ago.

Why does it take weeks to copy and paste what the NHS does?

You do know that many people who test positive don’t have any symptoms at all and never will.

So say 50% of ireland eventually get the virus and around 19% get secondary complications that would mean around a half a million people here will then get these secondary complications?

A lot being the vast vast minority of people who get it?
The common cold is a corona virus. This is a bad one, but it isn’t as bad the hyperbolic media are saying.

As this virus develops it will become less deadly also. As the virus, like it’s hosts, wants to survive.

It will make people sick, but only small numbers will succumb(look correct word use!)
