How are people importing while Covid restrictions are happening? Am I right in saying that if I go to the UK to buy a car over the next few days I'll have to self isolate for the 14 days on return?

I imported my car just over two weeks ago now from Sunderland. Had it inspected by a bmw specialist and collected by a transporter who brought it to Belfast (couldn’t wait for him to bring it to Dublin!). Fairly stressful buying without seeing but seller was genuine and all went smoothly

Anyone had trouble with payment for VRT? Credit card transactions are sometimes flagged for security, what do they do if you can't pay on the day?

Are debit cards flagged in the same way? Never occurred to me.

I paid for my VRT solely with my credit card, was roughly €7.5k and wasn’t flagged (KBC issued the card) I’d imagine a quick call to KBC would have gotten it sorted if it was flagged at the centre. You can pay in multiple/combination of ways with on the day cash/debit/credit/dinosaur cheque but I do know they impose limits on certain method i.e. I think it’s a max of €250 cash.

Why not just pre notify your credit card company of the pending transaction so that there are no issues on the day?

When it comes to UK car inspections, who would you recommend?

RAC seems to be mentioned back through the thread, any others I should be looking at?

It's a 15 year old car, so a peek underneath for rust would need to be part of it.

RAC and AA have an age cut off, check their websites. I just got an inspection done in Glasgow via ClickMechanic, who are a service agent for local mechanics. A mobile guy did it for me, seems to have been very thorough, cost around €150. Haven't actually seen the car yet though. :)

I've been researching that recently and it seems the best approach is to get a local garage that specializes in the brand to check out out for you. Not sure of the precise mechanics, but I'm guessing the garage have someone pick the car up from the dealer so they can put the car up on ramps and do a thorough check.

Does anyone know what would be accepted as proof of the date of entry into ireland from the north, if I don't have an invoice?

Letter from insurance showing when I put the car on cover?
    Toll receipt on the M1?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭User1998

Regardless of proof of entry you still need an invoice, even if the car is from the UK and you have a ferry ticket etc.

Can you not request an invoice? If it was a private purchase, a hand written invoice will suffice.

Make it yourself, as long as the price is correct and you can correlate with spending (bank transfer, withdrawal) it'll be fine.

Never heard of the bold bit. Are you sure about that?

It doesn’t need to correlate with anything

It probably doesn't if you don't act the maggot with the price. But VRT is collected by the Revenue, and I don't take any chances with the Revenue. They don't care who writes the receipt, they do care if you don't pay your share.

Don't think revenue give a hoot what it cost you, VRT goes on OMSP not purchase price.

And not all cars on their system have an OSMP, and it's calculated. By the Revenue. Jesus, who ate your ****ing lunch?

Price paid is totally irrelevant. You don't seem to know what you're talking about, tbh.

See my previous post. I'm no expert on VRT, but I know that not all cars have an OMSP. Not everything is cut and dried, not everyone buys an Opel Meriva.

Very few would be buying an Opel Meriva from the UK

Not necessarily. It proved you made a purchase for a declared amount, and that you didn't recover VAT, implicit in a private sale, if it was a dealer invoice similarly it will show the vat portion if it was a vat qualifying car, and that you did or didn't pay the vat by reference to your transaction receipt. Of interest also to revenue is the transaction amount, as importing cash paid cars and selling them on would be a good method of money laundering. if your invoices amounts were suspiciously low, it'll set off alarms. There's quite a few dodgy dealers out there moving import cars around to generate clean cash, ask any plod.

    Hi
Posted before about flipping cars. So I purchased a car and paid with revolut today so that part is sorted hopefully.

Reading the documents flipping cars sent me it has the following
    Is this correct

    Export / Ireland
When you receive the V5 please post the blue slip of export to the DVLA asap. We will send a ferry ticket too so you can complete your VRT

Is that what I should do or maybe the document is outdated.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭User1998

Post it if you want but it literally makes no difference to you or flipping cars weather you send it or not

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,795 ✭✭✭Isambard

i'm not sure you will actually get a V5 in the post, which they imply. You need it in your hand on purchase.

Was the saving worth going through flipping cars?

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buying a car from a dealer in the North and just wondering about the VRT calculator on Revenue's website. I see some people have said to take it with a massive pinch of salt and that has me concerned. I'm buying a 2 litre diesel 2018 4-Series so should be relatively common and the the dealer has listed a nox value of 0.023 g/km. The VRT calculator is saying €6,200 for this car. How likely is the figure to be close to that? Just would hate a nasty surprise at the time of payment.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,645 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

VRT calculator is right, if it's the right model car.
And your car has no extras from that model.

Always been within €200 either way for me.

Thanks for that. The particular one I'm looking at is pretty high spec compared to what might be common down here. Might the extras add up to a lot? Apologies but I've never imported a car before so no idea what to expect.
