Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Says here https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/e885b2-covid-19-coronavirus-travel-advice/

The department is advising against all non-essential travel overseas.

So it's allowed without any reason.

    I see.

The Gov website you linked gives conflicting information to this other Gov website, that says: "there is a nationwide restriction on travel outside of 5 kilometres from your home, except for the reasons listed above".

So is your understanding that tomorrow one without those three essential reasons can not drive (say) from Dublin to Galway, but can take a flight to Berlin ?

    You are right, it's conflicting!
But if your really want to fly just have my link ready on your phone or print it.

    Thanks.
I am not in Ireland and the rules in Country I am in are the following: without essential reasons, one is not allowed to drive to another city in the same Country and likewise it also not allowed to drive/train/fly abroad (even if there are flights still going).

I find bizarre that in Ireland tomorrow one without those three essential reasons can not drive to another town in Ireland, but can take a flight abroad.

I have two questions, first is travel .
Does anyone think travel to France in July will go ahead?
.second, I needed to order a new passport. I have been on back order since March( yes I know they say to order 6 months in advance)
What do you do if you need a passport

Yeah, doing that. Still need passports, knowing my luck will get a green light the week before.

At least you're just wanting to go on a holiday.
A user yesterday is sitting on an island somewhere and their passport have expired.

LOcal Irish embassy to that country will sort out an emergency one trip passport to get you home , they always have.
You can still apply online for passport renewal. It won’t be processed immediately as there is no immediate need for one and passport staff are skeleton right now.
Business will resume soon I’d say .

Currently in the same situation here. Hoping the consulate in a neighbouring country will be able to assist me.

    Essential Services: Woodies, McDonalds, Supermacs.

    Non-Essential: NDLS, Passport Office, NCT.

    Laughable stuff.

I can see restriction loosening for people that need to go home to Ireland.
For people going on holidays, I don't see that in any way as essential.

Maybe Harris & co should cancel passports for the population. That will stop anyone having any notions of travelling.

Camt see travel going ahead. Airlines are cancelling flights all over the place. Wouldnt worry about it this year.

Hell no, but applications in Ireland should be deferred in regards to applications from abroad.

Besides, when restrictions lift everyone should stay in Ireland and holiday.
Spend your money locally people, help Ireland back on track!

Most tourist destinations in Europe are planning to be open in July. Ryanair getting back in the air from July too (40%, as opposed to now, 1%).

    "holiday in Ireland, spend locally"

Good one, hotels have been a rip off for years and there's not a chance people are going to help them now. No sympathy whatsoever.

First chance I get, I'm out of here! And many others no doubt.

Ok, I suppose the inclination to help your nation is less strong in some.

Paying tax every day not enough? You want me to throw money at greedy hoteliers too? Poor lads have no tourists to rip off these days so you suggest the Irish bail them out?

    Nah.

Ryanair are cancelling flights by the dozens in july.

Order the new credit card style passport and see if that comes quicker
    It's good for france
France is quarantining uk citizens for as long as the British quarantine on their citizens lasts
I'd imagine the same will be done on the Irish
So if we still have quarantine in july, you won't be going to France

Of course they're cancelling flights still. They aren't running a 100% schedule but they are operating 40% schedule in July. A route that has multiple flights per day for example will run just the 1.

I do know some lads mind you, flights out of Ireland were cancelled, but ones coming home were not, so didn't get full refund.. bit mad.

There isn't going to be mandatory quarantine for citizens travelling to France from Ireland as far as I know. If you want to avoid the 2 week quarantine coming home just fly back into belfast. Thats what I'm looking at doing.

How will they ever police this quarantine? They won't

There'll be as many "quarentines" as there were "lockdowns" in Ireland

We're far, far too laid back in this country. And our cases per capita reflect that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,282 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

It'll be like the social distancing and staying at home. Most people will just do it. Though maybe that won't be the case going forward as most people are so sick of it by now.

Validity of the card passport only lasts as long as the full passport in existence when you apply.

I’m trying to tell my girlfriend that. Unfortunately she just has it engrained in her brain to be a do-gooder by law and abides by everythingwere told on the news. Her company - a very small one, are saying she possibly will need to self isolate (maybe ) If she goes to Portugal with me at the end of June on holiday. I reckon they’re bull****ting as they couldn’t do without her for 2 weeks.

I’m self employed so it’s ok for me to say, quarantine won’t affect me at all.

Realistically - no one is going to call to the house or anytbing . You’d be unlucky if caught

Let me guess, all those Wexford etc locals that were practically spitting at Dublin people for spending the restricted period in their own holiday homes are now more than happy to take their money again?
Will there not be food shortages?

I was thinking of that too, I wonder would it work?

Depends on how the British authorities in Belfast impose the quarantine, and if they do, if there are any flights going in there Southern Europe. If that is a loophole, a lot of Southerners are going to try it out....

It won't be necessary, no one is going to enforce anything here or up North

Not now. Not yet. It really depends on what happens as the restrictions are relaxed.

People seem to forget that the virus hasn't been beaten, and that we could see something far worse occur than what's gone before. Considering that China relaxed their restrictions, and had a city explode with 8k new infections, we might see something similar happen here or in the UK/Europe. It's simply too early to be talking about what won't happen. It could happen, and such a quarantine could be enforced, if not increased in scope. Early days yet.

Hang on a second, there absolutely was not 8k new infections. A city of 8k was lockdowned while they do contact tracing after a small cluster of 5 cases was found. https://m.timesofindia.com/world/china/chinese-officials-have-quarantined-8000-people-in-the-countrys-northeast/articleshow/75796051.cms

    5 v 8k.. pretty critical difference there.

Fair enough. My mistake. (My memory has become kinda dodgy during this period, while out of work) The point stands though. It's still early days regarding this virus and what may happen once restrictions are relaxed.

No country yet has experienced a 2nd wave , there is so much fear monger about this and it’s based on nothing ! Fear is crippling people............point proved when someone says 8K contacted it when a Chinese city opened rather than the correct amount of 5 citizens.

You kinda have to make the point before someone says something like that... for it to be proven.

I made a mistake. Get over it.

I find this mad. Supposed to fly in July 4th.
Flights are still planning to go ahead, but no passports as office closed since March. Passport expires at end of June.

Camp we going to has emailed to say they not open die to recent confirmation of new cases.

Allianz travel have said they don't cover anything to do with covid.. what is the point of travel insurance if not for this type of issue

When did you purchase the travel insurance?

    In December

    In December

    What's their reasoning?
Surely in December COVID was mainly unknown so you couldn't have foreseen any of this?

Get their reasoning in writing and then get on to the insurance ombudsman.

    In December

Then there was nothing specific to Covid in the policy (they're all adding exclusions now).

Therefore it depends on the actual policy and they're all different. What did they say they're not covering exactly?

Are travel insurance companies not using the small print which relates to pandemics to not pay out.
