Sorry if I'm derailing the thread, but with all these plane's sitting idle, will they need an overhaul of lubricants and test's etc to make sure they're air worthy.

As oil and hydraulics need to be kept in tip top condition...

I'm no aircraft mechanic but Planes were meant to be in the air for 90% of their life so having them idle on the ground would mean that weekly parking jobs need to be done, check the electrics, hydraulics, run the engines etc.

If you're on Twitter there's some pretty cool pics of different airlines aircraft under the hashtag #Weareavivation (airlines around the world are inviting each other to post and invite other airlines to join in).

Separately, Stobart Group is looking at rescuing Stobart Air...

Aircraft have been getting stored and returned to service for decades now. The specialist storage facilities are well versed in the preservation process. ie. Covering sensitive instrumental.

It does have costs and processes associated with it. They don't just park the aircraft in the desert.

Airlines simply won’t need the capacity of superjumbos any time soon.I can see the ME3 reducing frequency as they only have larger aircraft

Probably not, but what about in the event that social distancing measures are required on board? I recently read an article about the need to have perhaps the middle seat on short haul aircraft blocked off to increase distancing between people, lowering max capacity by a third. If this was to occur, would the A380 become more attractive offering more space?

Cost would likely be the deciding factor here however.

I see that Emirates are testing passengers prior to boarding and getting a result in 10 minutes, but I haven’t read if this is a COVID test or an antibody test. But a 10 minute test would be a game changer.

This may only allow them to fly, they will still have to satisfy local quarantine requirements when they arrive.

Has there been much consolidation of gates at Dublin? Just curious are there areas of the terminals shut down at the moment. Heathrow and Manchester are closing terminals for example.

Looking at a couple of articles, doesn't seem to indicate what exactly they are testing. (blood tests mentioned)
One article mentions that Ethiad are going to introduce medical checks for general health (health rate, blood pressure, fever)

And what happens if there is a positive test exactly? Do they test before they get inside the terminal? At the gate? How do they deal with all the people that would have come into contact with the passenger prior to departure? I suspect the answer is that they kick the problem down the line to the receiving airport.

It makes you wonder that it is all being done just for the optics.

I suppose to be fair to Etihad they can only control the boarding point, the rest is up to the airport.

A blood test would indicate that it is an antibody test they are doing. Which only tells you if the person had the disease at some stage in the past, but not if you currently have it and are infectious.

So pretty much completely useless. In particular given that the WHO have just announced in the past few hours that there is no evidence that having the disease previously gives you immunity!

So it sounds like just security theatre to me.

Could a positive from this crisis be more space in economy class?

    I can dream...

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

DUB-SFO seems to be available from the 2nd of July, IAD looks like it might be dropped aswell, all subject to change of course, seems about right though, EWR and SFO operate on 787, 757's parked up, 30-50% drop across all routes/ carriers till at least summer 21 i'd imagine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 746 ✭✭✭SNNUS

Yes SFO - DUB from 2 July, hopefully..

What will SNN ops look like once the restrictions are partially lifted?

BOS, JFK, LHR with EI + a handful of FR routes?

Looking Grim, DL will be the next to announce no service..
Hopefully a few London flights and a JFK and see from there..

Is DUB/JFK empty these days ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 746 ✭✭✭SNNUS

Good question, how about DUB - ORD and DUB-BOS?

ALL flights are seeing load factors in double digits worldwide.

There is no practical (profitable pax service) demand currently due to restrictions.

The EI network, aviation industry in general will be very different post this. EI's focus will be to rebuild DUB ops everything else is secondary including SNN ops.
