This isn't going to hurt just EI.
Everyone involved in aviation is in trouble here.
The landscape will be very very different in a few months.

The airlines will recover in time it may be with new shareholders or employees or central bank bailouts but basically as long as there is demand there will be supply.

Aer Lingus are pretty screwed now

All airlines are screwed, at least they have the deep pockets of IAG to rely on - if it was public ownership or owned by the state a bail out will be required.

The EU doesn't allow them but they'll end up happening with some of the legacy carriers.

It does like like there will be a fairly massive recession before normality returns.

Can even the IAG weather this one out?

Aer Lingus are as screwed as every other airline but it's in a much healthier state going into this crisis than others. It may only buy them some extra time compared to others but time is vital in a situation like this.

It will be about survival from now on.

No, the costs here are beyond any cash on hand.

    Exactly.

It's going to be all sorts of grim in Shamrock House but first to respond will be first to recover.

States I imagine will be pumping all financial resources possible into creaking healthcare systems and welfare so bailing out airlines will be so so far down the list

How much cash do they have? Ryanair have €4 Billion in reserves which I feel must be amongst the highest.

Aer lingus may be ok looking at their fleet size and amount of staff. Other bigger airlines will be in serious trouble.
At the same time, there is going to be massive jobloss an this is just the beginning. In the bigger picture.....I think theres far worse things to be worried about.

Another one to look out for will be Virgin Atlantic, they've only recently got back on their feet after and part of the strategy to do was refocusing on the transatlantic market. Obviously they have Delta as big backers but the majority of their network is now solely focused on the US with limited service elsewhere, a large portion of it is also leisure based.

The basket case that is Allitalia must surely go to the wall given the state of Italy.

The existing ban wasn't actually on flights, but on people entering the country who had been in the countries listed, who are not US citizens or legal permanent residents.

Though if this one is the same, you'd have to wonder how long the airlines will choose to fly largely empty planes around.

Will Irish citizens be allowed out of the US?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,086 ✭✭✭Nijmegen

To be honest the impacts of this on the global economy are so big that it’s probably a case that we’ll be seeing all kinds of helicopter money from central banks and policy makers and bailouts all over the shop. When demand returns, and it will return, you’ll need functioning corporations to meet it.

This is going have a major impact not only on the airlines but the catering refueling companies and ground handling agents.
Then you have cargo exports/imports and other companies like my own that supply airlines on a weekly basis.
This will be worse than 9/11 as intra EU flights were still functioning, during the closures of US airspace.

Virgin Atlantic now telling the U.K. government that the airline industry needs 7.5 Billion in aid. The first of many such requests in the coming days.

Interesting to see what happens here with EI and FR.

What was the 13 airports all about? Flights can only arrive at 13 US airports form the EU?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭donkey balls

This be an interesting one to see how it pans out as govt support for National airlines is prohibited under RU regs, Saying that since 9/11 most EU based airlines have gone totally into private ownership.

7.5 billion?!?! They wont get that. Money will rightly be directed into healthcare and social welfare at this stage. Anything left over in a few months will be directed to helping business, of which 7.5 billion could go alot further than helping one single airline.
