Sci-fi needs its own subgenres, there are way too many variations of sci-fi

    - Fantasy (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc)
    - Space travel (The Martian, Interstellar, Gravity, Space Odissey)
    - Dystopian (Blade Runner, Her, Ex Machina, etc)
    - Comedy (Back to the Future, Safery not garanteed, etc)
    - Superheroes (The Avengers, Iron Man, transformer)

You've clearly never watched Star Trek if you're lumping it in with that other rubbish. Trek is pure Sci-Fi and if you're going to throw it in to a subgenre it would be Space Exploration not Fantasy.

Go on and get out of here with your wrongness!

I think also, regardless of what you think is or isn't SciFi is to think of the advancements in special FX through the ages

If you'd been alive in 1902, what wonderment at the film "A Trip to The Moon"

compare that to how they filmed space flight in various " modern" movies

Special Fx is another subject altogether, it's a substantial element in sci-fi movies and it does make it difficult to compare movies from different eras due to special FX quality, although good practical effects from late 80's early 90s movies in my opinion can compete with CGI
Star Trek does quality for Sci-fi, but I thing space sagas in general should be regarded as a separate sci-fi genre

    Her.
    Primer.
    Arrival.
    Gravity.
    Moon.
Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind.

Sci-Fi is at its core about Man's relationship with technology. How it shapes us, and how we deal with the self reflection it forces upon us. Few Sci-Fi films do this now, more about the spectacle of big bright loud battles.

    Edit, The Martian.

    Ok....

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1978) 4 5 Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Interstellar - Only watched recently and it was such a mind bending movie which I love. Left me questioning it for ages after and really enjoyed all the twists and turns

The Martian - Love the concept and all the science in it and how well thought out it was

Both are a bit emotional too at times which is a bonus

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

The matrix - loved this movie first time i watched it, it’s still brilliant after many many rewatches years later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭LadySkunk

    And The Matrix

Such a cool movie when it first came out, another of a bit of a mind bender and a good mix of storytelling and action

Gimme some reasons Skunk for your votes to stick, you can edit them into your posts if you like :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

Ghostbusters - this movie is a classic., if you haven’t watched it lately you need to schedule a rewatch

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,365 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

    Match 1:
Starship Troopers. A spot-on satire dressed up as a B-movie. Would you like to know more?

    Match 2:
Star Wars. Before Star Wars, the effects in sci-fi films were, with the odd exception, pretty dodgy. Star Wars was an absolute game-changer. After only one other film did I leave the cinema open-mouthed in wonder.

    Match 3:
    Pass

    Match 4:
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Probably the best of all the Star Wars films, but I fully expect it to be demolished by Aliens, so this is a vote to avoid a whitewash. (Would have voted for Aliens against pretty much anything else)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Starship Troopers - its a tough call as I love both, but Starship Troopers is the one I've gone back and watched again and again over the years.

Interstellar - because its not Star Wars.

The Martian - one of my nominees and just a great Sci-Fi movie. Ghostbusters is only barely a Sci-Fi.

Aliens - because its class and its not Star Wars.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

Aliens - because they only come out at night, mostly.

That reminds me, Pitch Black wasn't nominated. Great film, possibly would have had it on my list if I'd remembered it.
