Cumulus starting to develop rapidly in west Co Wexford.

Am I the only one who gets a bit of a headache when this happens?

Nope, head is absolutely thumping this morning.

Hoping the headache will prove worth it! :D

Of the airports, only Waterford mentions thunderstorms in the TAF. Casement just moderate showers. THere's a big difference in CAPE values between Casement (~800) and Dublin Airport (0) this afternoon. All activity should be from Kildare-ish south.

Waterford TAF, mentioning chance of thunderstorms with hail between 1 and 5 pm.

Is cork airport not mentioning it also? I don't really understand TAFs yet! :)

Sorry, you're dead right. Giving a very slight chance of thunderstorms with hail from 3 to 7 pm

Nice storm has sprung up west of Skibbereen now

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,809 ✭✭✭SouthWesterly

A blanket off grey in, north Kerry.
    10mm since midnight

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

Convection springing up along the Wexford/Waterford border now as the temperature tips 20 degrees. There looks to he a fair bit of southwesterly shear blowing the tops northwestward. Looks maybe a little stronger than forecast. Could help things.

Ah thanks! Will take any chance haha

From a couple of days ago Gfs gave best thundery chances for Tuesday over the southeast. That looks spot on. Gloomy and damp conditions here mean zero convection chances for midland areas today. Even late sunshine may only spark an odd shower or two. You need many hours of sun to get that convection working.

Cloud beginning to break up now in North kildare. Increasingly blue to my west. Still very grey to my east. I expect a rapid clearance of the lower level cloud now as the land will heat the air above it rapidly at the time of day/solar noon.

First rumble of thunder NW of Enniscorthy.

The common convergence zone from mt leinster to the Wicklow mts has fired up on its southern arm all the way down to west Waterford now too

I have seen mini tornadoes like that in Donegal, they are pretty cool to witness

Still 100% cloudy here in D9. 15 degrees. Can't see any blue sky in any direction yet. Satellite would suggest it's clearing but it remains dull for now.

I'll take seeing some nice convection further inland, maybe some distant thunder. Don't think my area was ever really marked for anything significant even today.

The sun is trying to break through in D22. Still very much overcast, though, at the moment.

Nice convection sparking up along or near the Wexford border, being along an area of convergence should see this area take off from now, Dp about 13C there an hour ago, can see the shear well on Satellite.

Haze and low cloud in Durrow though towards my ENE it looks to be thinning with that pink-orange-grey hue to the sky now. Temperatures have dropped slightly back towards 16°c though dewpoint holding steady at 14°c in a light WNW-N slight flow.

Personally don't see the same thunderstorm potential as previous days, but I stand to be corrected.

Looking good for the S/E. Sparking off already. Got a text from my wife to say it's thundering over home on the Carlow/Wexford border. Sky looks very dark looking across from north Carlow.

Some very active storms over Wales heading into the Irish sea and moving west,I'd expect these to stay electrified on their journey west
