Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Stop trying to rise panic dude, you have a lot of folks ears, stop being irresponsible.

Is he a politician? I thought he was just a random poster on boards.

He is, but has a fair few fans!

Allowing unrestricted travel too and from known high risk areas?
    Not restricting mass gatherings?

Containment for any future incident must include precluding all but absolutely necessary travel.

The globalisation of our economy and leisure means that we take travel for granted.
If we look back at the history of virulent outbreak and it's spread.
We are at a point where in a matter of days spread can be worldwide, versus the old model of westward travel along trade and shipping routes.

This kind of spread can only really be interdicted by firm action. Close entry points and quarantine. It's far easier to apologize for a delayed entry than it is to try recover from a pandemic situation that could have been at least mitigated.

While I understand the logic of what you are saying, in practice it's completely impossible.

There is nothing to stop people from Northern Italy travelling to France, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia etc and getting a flight from there.

You'd be talking about stopping all flights into Ireland.
We are an Island Nation, so this is 100% not possible.

If you damage the economy enough, people will also die.
People died as a result of the 2008 crash.

My only fear really is that your man in cork had it last week so he got it two weeks before that off somebody else who could have passed it onto countless amounts of other people and the HSE don’t really seem all the conferences saying it’s the only community case? There has to be others so cork could easily have a lot of cases now. That or the HSE knows exactly what’s going on but they are keeping stuff and trying not to cause panic, which in my opinion is wrong. Steps need to be taken just Incase. I’d say if there’s a few more community cases in Cork tonight or tomorrow we could see some steps being taken but also maybe not because it’s the HSE

The flip side of that is if there are loads of community cases they are mild enough that these people didn’t go to hospital.

3420 posts before this one and this is the first to mention 'Aussie flu' which was an epidemic two years ago but for some very strange reason got very little media coverage compared to this one? Something is not adding up?

Whats going to make this worse is hype, fear and anxiety- the mental health effects from threads like this will have much greater far reaching consequences than this virus and may well catapult us into recession if people don’t get a grip- this phenomenon is well studied internationally.

Nope. If you have been paying attention the last few years, we've been building towards a recession. You can't expect no blowback from years of low interest rates and QE, money being printed out the ying yang.

2019 was akin to 2007. 2020 was shaping up to be like 2008 but this coronavirus event has changed the course of everything, it's a huge trigger for a recession.

And recession was going to happen REGARDLESS of a boards thread with a dozen of so posters telling people to prepare. I'm not panicked, I'm prepared. If you have people in your life in the high risk categories you'd be prepared too.

We had the same dopes in 2006/2007 telling us not to be "doom mongers" well look what happened? And we are still dealing with the fallout from 2008 and the property bubble, many lives gone, emigrated and STILL destroyed from it. This is a totally different event that can change the landscape of this country and many others worldwide.

And yes this has been well studied -> http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/event201/about

We don't do too well in simulations.

So actually, shut up if you've nothing of value to add to this thread.

Good show on Radio 1 , missed the name of the specialist but good discussion on it.

    She says we need to

    - Increased monitoring and testing
    - Increase social distancing (sounds like shut down)
    - Self isolation when people return from anywhere in the world

How we react now could determine how bad it ends up. I really think a significant shutdown is coming.

Its all about slowing it down now.

Again, the authorities need to start communicating better. Setup forums for people to ask questions (whether website or live play) to help reduce panic. The Next 3 months are going to be tough, but most of us will be fine, so our authorities need to let people know that they are being heard, answer their questions/concerns. Do not keep telling them to stay away from social media because its too late to close the stable door on that, so setup your own social media platforms to engage people who use these mediums.

WHAT ARE WE DONE WITH KERMIT?

Done like - completed it mate? or done like - thunderdome done?
    The latter sadly.

We simply don't have the health infrastructure to deal with anything like an Italy or South Korea sadly. We just don't.
    It's true.

If we had an outbreak like that we would require the type of outside assistance that would effectively end the sovereignty of the country.

We don't have the capacity to deal with what is going on on the continent.

There is no argument to be had here. We just don't. The health system would collapse.

Aussie flu was i believe a pretty normal seasonal influenza that was worse because it wasn't in the vaccine.

It wasnt anything compared to this

Glad to see local committees making decisions early on Parades. It’s quite clear that the National Committee has its playbook and is proceeding with it; time will tell if events have got ahead of it.

I hope more clubs committees and individuals will reach the sensible decision to slow down the spread of it by canceling events and avoiding crowd gatherings.

I will leave it at that.

This has since been updated and the number of people in intensive care in Lombardy alone is 243 which is roughly equal to our total ICU capacity.

Don't panic, nothing to see here.

To put it in context Lombardy's population is slightly more than twice that of Ireland so proportionately we have twice the ICU capacity and are adding to it.

You’re dead right. And remember blue flu where the Gardaí called in sick. Nobody has mentioned that!!!
Maybe it’s because it doesn’t compare?

Nothing at all, but there is a big difference from hopping on a 19.99 flight down the road and having to travel 500 miles to another airport to get a flight. The point about containment and delay is making it difficult for people to travel from infected regions. The Chinese have done it really well. Personally I think only a Hubei style isolation of most of Northern Italy is going to solve this. If the Chinese can isolate a province of 50 million, it shouldn't be too hard to do the same in Northern Italy. Its proven to work.

The EU need to take leadership.

Has anyone noticed any changes in habits from others or strangers?

The only one I personally noticed so far is that after our indoor football games, nobody seems to be shaking hands anymore. But that was becoming less common even before the virus reached Europe anyway.

Maybe another one I'm actually noticing now that may have always being going on is people coughing into their upper arm.

Moving the goalposts, nice. Your tone has been quite assertive and certain throughout the thread. We could cope with what the dutch are dealing with, italy not so much. But as things currently stand its just not logical to predict that it'll get that bad.

Sure an asteroid might hit us overnight and end it all,

Or swarms of super aids infested locusts might take over the world and kill us all,

The US response to this is simply the worst, many states still don't have testing equipment and the primary campaigns are rolling about the country. Other than lads not going licking the same wall they aren't exactly miles off from the Iranians.
