dogs have tested positive for Coronavirus in Hong Kong in the last few days. Thats a whole different ball game.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/05/hong-kong-warns-residents-not-to-kiss-pets-after-dog-contracts-coronavirus

That's old news and they didn't test positive in that they have the virus- it is more like they have the virus on them like any surface could have the virus on it.

If you'd said a few months ago that Italy would be locking down an area of 11 million people I'd have laughed in your face. Crazy.

Its too late. Chances are, the virus has been here for a while now. It probably wouldn't do any good.

It's been in Italy longer so far more widespread, so would be necessary to slow it down or else whatever you do here becomes pointless

If they had stopped the flights from Italy after the first few cases they could have bought time, contained the cases they had and then prepared for future cases rather than playing catch up.

That ship has already sailed, but if 2 weeks ago the whole of Europe has started to refuse entry to anyone who had recently been to Northern Italy, it would have greatly slowed down propagation on the continent. And it would have worked particularly well for the U.K. and Ireland if we had cooperated on this as there is no easy way to enter our CTA without going through border check at an airport or a port.

Even better would have been for Italy to actually lock down that area back then (protecting both the rest of Italy and the whole of Europe).

There are in the region of 500+ more cases, undiagnosed as of yet.

Euromillions numbers for next ? Seeing as you have such round figures.

The poster isn't making it up. You only have to look at Italy. Two weeks ago, they had 20 cases. They're up to 4000. There are alot more people with the virus and not knowing they have it. It's how it's spreading.

Italy at 5,800 confirmed cases (233 deaths), about even-stevens with Iran.
With Iran you could assume it's a 'tad more' than this disclosed figure.

Is that the only update for Ireland today? It says on the RTÉ website that the one case is all that was confirmed up to lunch time today so does that mean there is other cases today that we haven’t heard about? Or are we hopefully going to manage to stop this thing spreading around Ireland and all the madness going on in the shops will be a waste and the retailers will all be laughing at us.

hopefully! Maybe it isn't spreading as quickly in Ireland because the virus dies when it comes into contact with alcohol :pac:

You know how slow HSE are at admitting people to beds in A&E?
They are the same people doing the testing of cases.
    This is just information lag.
They don't know how the case in Cork was infected.
    The numbers have blinkers on.

What's our highest total so far, 7?

So we are down two days in a row. Bucks the trend of pretty much all other countries on recorded cases.

is that not due to the fact that initially the results were back same day (within 4 hours was the shortest time i heard) but now I heard its 24-48 hours so if the results are taking longer to come back the chances are monday and tuesday we will easily be into double digit cases per day (assuming they are running the tests saturday and sunday but I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't)

I'd say it's the only update but stuff will probably be getting in to the papers from now on.

Things leak in a country this size fairly easily.

It is going to spread unfortunately.

What countries are doing now is slowing the spread, to give the hospitals more time to help people with severe disease, and to give more time for scientists to develop treatments.

This will happen in Ireland in the coming weeks or months, and you should be prepared as best you can for this - e.g. helping older relatives who may want to self isolate as much as possible.

That's what should have been done.

There is a strong Trade link between Northern Italy and Wuhan, China in the Textile Industry. Largest Chinese population in Europe in that region

Officials should have realised this and closed the area at the same time that the Chinese took action.

It would not stop the Virus but would contain it and give Countries time to prepare

Has anyone thought about the morality of carrying on with the St Patrick’s Festival at this time?

It strikes me as obscene to hold a countrywide party while our friends and neighbours in Italy and elsewhere are mourning hundreds of deaths.

It takes upto 14days for the virus to show, those people with confirmed cases here only developed symptoms recently and then it showed up in tests, the people they could have passed this onto wont know for at least another week and then another week and a half too 2 weeks for the people they could have infected its a big scary merry go round.
