When I'm in a restaurant I usually dont have 15 to 20 people within a metre of me, but there you go.
I'm not sure exaggeration helps, you wouldn't get those kind of numbers packed on a bus or lift.

It was pretty much the same as that when I was in late this afternoon, minus the drama of the Garda car driving on the footpath to get to Tuckey St. Plenty of space between groups, Garda van was parked up by the boardwalk for visibility, a few Gardaí walking around, stopping to chat to the odd group overtly drinking. Was a pretty cheerful and safe feeling atmosphere. Looks a lot worse with selective pictures taken from a distance so you can't see the space between people.

    That’s exactly it I’d say.
Guy who took the video was loving it in my opinion so he could get his likes and shares.

Were you one of the neanderthals in the clip?

I can't believe young people are so reckless! Parents must be so disappointed, if they cared.

Nope, just don’t have much time for people like him who love to post things online looking for attention.

    The irony of your statement.
The cretins out in force in the city are the passive aggressive ones not me.

with all due respect, you were there in the afternoon. I drove by at 9pm. The Gardai also corroborate my version of events.

He's out there doing a soup run for the homeless.

Lads, yer man might be doing charity work, fair play to him, but like "I'm fearing for our lives"??? Cop on a bit. A bit dramatic.

The best was the comment “we’re in fear for our lives” and when he turns the camera they all start smiling

I don't doubt you genuinely saw a crowd, just I think 16-21 people in just over 3 square meters is an exaggeration.

RedFM are murder lately for pushing controversy. I really honestly don't see the issue with people outside.

those plinths can fit around 6 people sitting with others surrounding them.

I'll have a look at my dashcam tomorrow for ya.

That’s fantastic and I knew that by the way but he still didn’t need to put the video online.

I'm not condoning the carry on at all but I find the narrative on the video overly dramatic, " Never seen anything like this even on a movie ", " In fear for our lives", seriously. Then had to mention that they are "charity workers ", also no masks or social distancing amongst themselves from what I could see.
I've heard lots of people comment on the actions of others recently but don't stick to the guidelines themselves, visiting other houses etc.
I think if we all just concentrated on ourselves and accept that there will be crowds gathering in town particularly in the run up to Christmas then we might see the numbers continue to drop or stabilise, I'm not convinced that outside gatherings are a major cause of spreading the virus tbh.

    Completely over dramatic commentary.
Reports of someone with a pellet gun, a possible reason for the Gardai actions in the video, possibly.

We are supposed to be in a lockdown.
Looking at the numbers, it's not working.
Looking at the video, you can see why.

Ironically, possibly the best way for us to 'beat' Covid is a serious drop in temperatures and a good lash of rain.

The video doesn’t show why it’s not working. Deputy CMO said they don’t have evidence / proof that outdoor gatherings are a major infection event.

The Irish Times ran a good piece a couple of days ago, setting out Leo may have been right to say the first call to move to Level 5 wasn’t thought through.

But then these gatherings will move back indoors too a persons house rather then in the fresh air. People are going too meet and socialize over X mas in huge numbers. Anyone who thinks they won’t isn’t living in reality.

And if they do, there is every chance a fraction of them will catch Covid and spread it to people they know, especially family members. The numbers are not going down for a reason. Too much socialising has to be a part of it.
I'll be doing my best to keep myself and my family safe this Christmas. I won't be inside or standing outside any pub. No big family gatherings or meals like usual. No Christmas night out with the lads. No Christmas staff night out.
That will be my reality and many others unfortunately.
    Each to ther own
    Christmas will come again.

Seems to be more concern about the ridiculous commentary than the actual carry on in the video.

I'm self employed and although my business was still able to function (albeit much reduced) I put my it on hold to go back into health care when the call was made and to be honest I'm knackered, it's been non stop and I've never worked so many hours (also for so little pay). My wife is also self employed and hasn't worked since July. Please dont 'like' this post as a sympathy vote, that not what it's about, more my own personal observations and comments but wanted to give a bit of background to it.

I am 'hearing' and I state hearing from colleagues of an increase in positives from these type of situations. I personally know of 5 last week from a group of teenage lads meeting in Cork so it's a reality. I think the issue here is more the attitude of some of the people involved rather than the setting. I personally think controlled restaurants and bars are safer than the scenes we've seen when with a few drinks people are getting too close, raised voices or shouting increases the distance of transmission. Outdoor can really work but I fear some are just abusing it. Christmas is coming and I've no doubt with meetings, god sake we need some family normality, there will be a resurgence in January, but to do the dog on it now just means we reduce the chance of a level 2 in December. Plus from a personal perspective, if it stays at 3, I'm working christmas day..... I'd rather not.

Sorry to ramble but just a view from inside.

So it wasn’t even related to people gathering, it was drugs seizures ffs. More overreaction.

There was a drugs related incident.
    9 people were arrested.
Nowhere does it suggest that 9 people were arrested for drugs related incidents.
In fact, it specifically states that one was a public order offence.

I don't know, any more than you do, how many of the arrested were for drugs.

They were involved in the sale and supply of drugs. I’m not sure what part of that involves gathering.
Running, shouting, causing ruckus with the Gardai = public order offence.

A longer form of the statement, including comments that the early evening was relevialty okay.
Gardaí in Cork City Make Number of Arrests for Public Order and Other Offences

In support of Level 5 under the Framework for Living with COVID-19 which commenced on the 22nd October 2020, An Garda Síochána in Cork City and Nationwide increased their patrols and engagement particularly in relation to gathering in large groups in open spaces.

This has seen increased Garda activity on foot, mountain bikes and vehicle patrols in identified public spaces.

On Saturday evening between approximately 5pm and 9pm large numbers of people socialised in Cork City Centre. The high visibility of members on the street greatly assisted in engaging with the public who were overwhelmingly compliant with Public Health guidelines, Gardaí identified that most persons present were part of family groups and bubbles that were in the city to see the Christmas lights, window shopping and enjoying take away festive drinks and food. Cork City centre was quiet after 9pm. Gardaí nationwide observed significant compliance by members of the public with public health regulations and guidelines.

    During the course of the evening, in Cork City Centre, Gardaí observed and intervened with a group of young males suspected of being involved in the sale and supply of illegal drugs. One male ran from Gardaí who after a brief chase intercepted and arrested this male. This engagement has been captured and circulated widely on social media. A quantity of suspected cocaine was recovered. One Garda received minor facial injuries during the incident. During this incident, and as a result of a small number of other, mainly related, minor public order incidents 9 males were arrested by Gardaí;

    • 4 males have been released pending the completion of a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions

    • 1 male has been charged with public order offences

    • 1 male will be offered an Adult Caution

    • 2 juvenile males will be processed through the Juvenile Diversion Programme

From the outset in supporting the COVID-19 public health guidelines and regulations, An Garda Síochána has and will continue to adopt, a graduated policing response based on its tradition of policing by consent. This has seen Garda members engage, explain, encourage and, as a last resort, enforce.

An Garda Siochana is committed to acting in a proportionate manner and working with the community to achieve compliance.

The COVID-19 Pandemic remains a public health crisis and An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all citizens to comply with Public Health Guidelines and Regulations, in particular essential journeys, in order to continue to save lives.
