This is decades of mismanagement of our health system coming back to bite us in the ass. Our hospitals will not cope with an influx of big numbers so the government has to shut the place down to prevent that.

Complete BS. For starters, up to 80% of those who go into ICU with COVID come out in a bag. So it’s not as though any government is going to say, “we have enough ICU capacity now so let’s just let this thing run wild.” Secondly, Australian states have well resourced health systems and yet they put in place what is arguably the most draconian lock-down in the Western World. Rule breakers in various states were getting on-the-spot fines of over €1,000 for a first offence. One woman in Perth got a six month jail sentence for failing to quarantine having returned from Victoria. That’s what strong public health policy looks like and it shouldn’t be determined by how many ICU beds you have.

Ireland only has a 20% fatality rate for those admitted to ICU. Most deaths have not occurred in ICU though.

I think you’re mixing up our ICU survival rate with somewhere else. Ours is remarkably high.

Where in gods name are you getting that figure from? Calling for people to be jailed for failing to quarantine?? Some of ye are seriously unhinged.

Was of the same belief that this was the case. Having said that ICU is not the place to be as some of the long-term effect of becoming very sick from this virus seem to suggest irreversible damage.

Not sure what business you are frequenting, but anywhere in cork I have been in the last couple of months has had excellent mask-wearing. Very rare to see anyone without a mask in a business open to public from what I have seen.

It depends what area you are in though. A few days before the mask restrictions officially came in I was in two Lidl’s on the same day. Both in the city but different areas of the city. The first one had 1 person in the shop not wearing a mask while in the second Lidl I was the only person that wore a mask (including staff). This was on the same day about 2 hours apart.

Why the delay? Even if we’ve no cases in the next two days it won’t bring down the incidence rate by a whole pile will it?

Great news! Lockdown hasn’t exactly been a roaring success in other county’s so maybe it’s time for a different approach

Sorry, what I was mixing up was the overall ICU fatality rate with the ventilator fatality rate. The latter is very high. But whether the ICU survival rate is 20% or 80% the point stands. No government is going to say that we shouldn’t lock down simply because ICU has enough capacity!

Of course I don’t think people should be jailed for six months for failing to quarantine. But I do think there should be hefty fines for some of the very dangerous behaviour that I’ve heard about recently. In one household, an older child tested positive and they were all told to isolate. But that didn’t stop the idiot mother from having the friends of her younger child over for a play date. An Australian style €5,000 fine is entirely justifiable for that type of wanton endangerment.

This is good. Fingers crossed this means that the Cork public health teams think they can control the clusters? 🀞ðŸ¼

Just heard UCC have given out 11 sanctions to students for breaching code of behaviour. Not sure what that entails for the students involved.

    47 today

Cork's 14 day incidence rate per 100k is now 88.42 with today's figure of 47 included

    Restriction thresholds in previous instances:

    6th August: Laois (69.7), Offaly (80.8), Kildare (82.2)
    16th September: Dublin 114.2
    24th September: Donegal 148.2

Today is the first day where the 14 day incidence only includes double figures worth of cases on each day included in teh count. The last day we had a single figure case count was September 16th with 8 cases. It's been double digits since then.

Just from looking at the updated LEA map, colors have darkened in all of cork bar the Bantry LEA and the north west. Worst is the bishopstown, wilton, ballincollig at 146/100000 aka cork city south west

Majority not near level 3. It is the city that’s elevating our incidence rate

Yup, North East, South West and South Central really driving the figures.

That's because of small populations. Not really possible to measure effectively per 100,000 when there's less than 100,000 in the majority of places.

Below the national average though (which was 92.1 last night). Only City SW, City NE and City SC are higher.

Has it levelled? Is there a chance the worst might be over? Schools and pubs open nigh on 4 weeks now.

We'll have to see what tomorrow is like for Cork. If we get another 60+ tomorrow, after the decrease today, you can assume it's increasing.

While 47 is lower than yesterday if it’s a higher number than 47 tomorrow then it’s not a trend downwards which is what people in cork want to see. I was all set for a level 3 restrictions and I’m shocked we aren’t but we aren’t so.

Edit: ACE got there before me.
