I haven't seen the full article. So location of positive in infections and death are been made public?

Macron is addressing the nation later on this evening. Everyone (commercial business etc) expecting a total lock down from tonight.

Waiting on diesel and supplies to be delivered and they’re talking about at least a 15day wait/backlog.

Macron, for all intents and purposes, has France locked down.
100k extra cops on the streets to enforce lockdown.

He ‘declared war’ on the virus. This declaration of war swings into force extraordinary laws and state powers.

Now the French Government has all the power it needs to, forcefully or otherwise, lockdown the country...I was stopped 5mins ago by Gendarmes at a roundabout and I’d a lot of explaining to do about why I was going to the vet, and what for.

At last it’s starting to be taken seriously.

When will a coronavirus vaccine be ready?

Even at their most effective – and draconian – containment strategies have only slowed the spread of the respiratory disease coronavirus or Covid-19. With the World Health Organization finally declaring a pandemic, all eyes have turned to the prospect of a vaccine, because only a vaccine can prevent people from getting sick.

About 35 companies and academic institutions are racing to create such a vaccine, at least four of which already have candidates they have been testing in animals. The first of these – produced by Boston-based biotech firm Moderna – will enter human trials in April.

This unprecedented speed is thanks in large part to early Chinese efforts to sequence the genetic material of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. China shared that sequence in early January, allowing research groups around the world to grow the live virus and study how it invades human cells and makes people sick.

But there is another reason for the head start.......

    China

During the past 3-4 days, the number of new infections has come down drastically in Wuhan -- from what used to be in the hundreds down to 4 for 2 consecutive days.

This has been considered success of control measures. There is another epidemiological explanation. Wuhan population has very likely been virtually saturated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, depleting the numbers, and minimising the proportion of non-immune persons among the population. Low numbers of new infections should be expected.

This sequence of events suggests that eventually, SARS-CoV-2 will behave like H1N1 and follow a similar trajectory. We should expect it becoming endemic and probably seasonal. Not a comforting thought.

In Wuhan, the earliest detected infection was in mid-November [2019]. The transition from zoonotic transmission to anthroponotic transmission might have occurred even earlier; probably much earlier.

    Italy

[The tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Italy is now, 24 747 cases, including 1809 deaths, up from 21 157 cases and 1441 deaths reported on 14 Mar 2020. The 24-hour change between 14 and 15 Mar 2020 was 3590 newly confirmed cases, compared with 3497 newly confirmed cases between 13 and 14 Mar 2020. Cases continue to be concentrated in Lombardy (13 272), the epicenter of the outbreak, Emilia-Romagna (3093), and Venice (2172), all in the northern part of the country. These 3 provinces account for 74.9% of newly confirmed cases in the past 24 hours. There is an excellent interactive map at http://opendatadpc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/b0c68bce2cce478eaac82fe38d4138b1 to visualize the caseloads per region in near real time.

On 9 Mar 2020, Italy announced a lockdown for the northern provinces where the outbreak was concentrated. On 10 Mar 2020, this was changed to be countrywide. On 11 Mar 2020, Italy announced the closure of non-essential businesses. As for seeing an impact, one shouldn't expect to see an impact until at least one incubation period has passed, as there are newly infected individuals who are still in their incubation period for up to 14 days. As mentioned before, the Public Health world is looking at Italy to see if this is feasible and if it has an impact in terms of slowing down transmission of the virus.

    Iran

Iran warned on Sunday [15 Mar 2020] that its health facilities could be overwhelmed by coronavirus cases. The country, which has the 3rd-most recorded cases and deaths, reported another 113 deaths on Sunday, pushing its death toll to 724, The Associated Press [AP] reported. Iran has confirmed 14 000 cases.

"If the trend continues, there will not be enough capacity," said Ali Reza Zali, who is leading the Iranian campaign against the outbreak, the state-run IRNA news agency reported, according to the AP. The country is believed to have 110 000 hospital beds, with 30 000 in the capital, Tehran, but authorities said they will develop mobile clinics as needed.

Zali also said "many" of the people who have died from the virus were otherwise healthy, which strays from other statements from local officials who say the disease only impacts those who are older and/or sick. About 55 percent of the people who died were in their 60s, while 15 percent were younger than 40. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday [15 Mar 2020] that the country would not be implementing a general quarantine and would continue to work to keep its borders open, according to the AP.

Iran is experiencing the worst outbreak in the Middle East. Several senior officials, including Cabinet ministers, members of Parliament, Revolutionary Guard members and Health Ministry officials have tested positive for the virus.

I am starting to think the English approach is the best approach anyone that don't want to get it self isolate and let the rest of us take our chances. With our approach this will go on for ever.

The problem is if too many people get it st the same time more will die as services won't manage.
If you had a pen of calves got scour you may have no losses, if every calf in the place got scour and new ones landing into the environment you would be under more pressure and likely to have more losses. Anyone that's dealt with crypto would know that the UK way is risky. Herd immunity is fine if exposure is controlled , this isnt

As of midday today France is on total lockdown.
Permits from the Interior Ministry are needed to leave your home, whether for work, food shopping, or emergencies, a permit is needed.
If another 100k gendarmes are needed to enforce the lockdown, they’ll be put on the ground.
The fine starts today at €38 for breaking the curfew. The fine then raises to €135 on Friday, and will keep rising until people cop on.

€300bln available now for small business.
All rents and utility bills are frozen for the foreseeable.
Any large companies that come under financial pressure will be nationalized...

Some where there is just such a piece of legislation, it is just not used. If not the PS is drafting it in case it is needed. Dail and Senate could pass it on twenty minutes and president could sign it an hour later if need be

Just the counties with the highest incidences mentioned in that section, I don't think they have the counties with deaths mentioned. I was expecting to see it elsewhere this morning but I haven't come across it yet.

Yes, 2 deaths. Not to be over pessimistic but the figures and the Taoiseach sugges 15,000 positive by the end of the month. Of these 20%, 3,000 will require hospitalisation.

On the vaccine, human trials started in the US yesterday. Will take 12-18 months, but my hunch is it could be released sooner, esp to elderly and at risk groups.

The Dail will pass legislation Thursday. It includes a provision for the Minister for Health to sanction the detention of any person positive to Covid 19 for 14 days, if they refuse to do it voluntarily.
    Hope everyone does well.

By flattening the curve you stretch out when people get the virus. So at some point in time there is a significant number of recovered immune to act as a buffer between the sick and the well.

The English approach see's everyone get sick together and recover (not counting deaths) together. There are no sick and well groups for those with immunity to come between.

Apparently COVID 19 isn't the real threat. And to think this wan was hosting the Claire Byrne show last night. She shouldn't be let out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,389 ✭✭✭✭Water John

That's not what she's saying. She isn't minimising Covid -19, simply saying, in her opinion, the climate change will be a bigger global crisis.
You may agree or disagree with her view, but she's not belittling the Covid-19 threath.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,262 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Shameless trying to dismiss this when history is full of her type of doomsday falling through. There's a body count with this and real economic problems. Not some worst case scenario predictions so you can push your ideology through.

Useful idiots had 'American virus' trending on twitter. Lord Haw Haw would be smiling up at them. No shame.

The U.K. are now thinking that demand on ICU beds could be 800% of capacity, that’s 7 people being denied ICU beds at a time for every one in use. . They are in that position because they sat on their hands rather than acting early on. They are making a controlled U turn on policy at the moment.
